Achieve superb audio capture in demanding conditions for your next professional film, TV, or location recording with the Sennheiser MKH 416-P48U3 Shotgun Microphonemoisture-resistant shotgun microphone. Mix-ready sound quality is provided by its sharp directivity, low noise, and strong output. Plus, there are no controls to worry about; the MKH 416-P48U3 delivers the reliability you need for high-pressure gigs.

The microphone exhibits a hypercardioid polar pattern at low to midrange frequencies and transitions to a lobar pattern in high frequencies, allowing it to attenuate 125 Hz to 2 kHz by approximately 10 dB at the 90° off-axis points. Your dialogue, foley, and sound effects can be recorded with full dynamics and clarity, thanks to the MKH 416-P48U3's wide frequency response, enhanced consonant articulation, and high SPL handling.

When your work takes you outdoors, you're bound to encounter humidity and condensation, which can cause many mics to fail. The MKH 416-P48U3's RF condenser design makes it highly immune to moisture, allowing you to reliably capture high-quality audio in normal and adverse environmental conditions.

The MKH 416-P48U3 was engineered with the experienced professional in mind. Its 40 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response incorporates a gentle rise from 5 to 15 kHz to increase intelligibility, and a natural bass roll-off to mitigate rumble. Its low self-noise of 13 dBA and high sensitivity of -32 dB enable studio-worthy signal purity without requiring noise reduction and gain boosting in postproduction.

The MKH 416-P48U3 boasts a transformerless and fully floating balanced output for optimal signal integrity. Thanks to its 3-pin XLR output and compliance with 44 to 52 VDC phantom power, the MKH 416-P48U3 is compatible with a variety of handheld audio recorders, field recorders, and mixer adapters, as well as built-in preamps on many camcorders and cinema cameras.

The MKH 416-P48U3's metal body features a matte black finish to prevent distracting visual reflections. Mount the MKH 416-P48U3 directly on a stand or boompole using the supplied MZQ 100 clip. Alternatively, place the MKH 416-P48U3 in the separately available Sennheiser MZS 20-1 combination shockmount, pistol grip, and stand adapter to prevent the transfer of vibrations to the microphone.

The MKH 416-P48U3 has a foam windscreen to reduce unwanted wind noise from breezes, fans, heaters, and air conditioners. For maximum reduction of wind noise in indoor or outdoor environments, consider the Sennheiser MZH 60-1 furry windshield (available separately).

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can this be powered by batteries or only with phantom power?

A: All phantom, all the time, sweet pea. As a Pressure Gradient Mic, doesn't even take batteries.

Q: 2. Can the MKH416 be used with Xvive U3C for providing phantom power?

A: Yes, the Sennheiser MKH 416-P48U3 Moisture-Resistant Shotgun Microphone, can be used with the Xvive Audio U3C Set Wireless Plug-On System for Condenser Microphones (2.4 GHz). The Xvive system can provide phantom power to the microphone.

Q: 3. Would I be able to pair with Canon XF605? What else needed? Would want to record into actual camcorder and not pair later.

A: You would use an XLR cable like BH #KOM4001.5 to connect the Sennheiser MKH416 to the XLR mic input on the Canon XF605. You would also use BH #SAROCS to fit the microphone securely into the shotgun mic holder on the XF605.

Q: 4. Has anyone used it with Sony FS7 on camera? How does it work?

A: works awesome

Q: 5. Is MKH 416 good to capture toddler voices (2-4 years) outdoors? Any better alternatives?

A: Yes, the Sennheiser MKH 416 Shotgun Microphone is an excellent microphone for capturing anyone's voice while outdoors. There are many other shotgun mics that would also work, but the MKH 416 is one of the best. You could also use individual wireless lavalier microphones for each person, if the toddlers would be able to tolerate wearing the mics and transmitters.

Q: 6. What is the best xlr cable for using this on the Sony FX3?

A: The Sony FX3 does not come with an XLR input, so you would need an XLR audio handle or adapter. Assuming this is already taken care of, you can use any 3-pin XLR cable with the Sennheiser MKH416. A right-angle cable such as BH #KOM3001.5R would minimize the footprint of your rig, and a low-profile cable such as BH #CACTLPXR10BL would minimize it further.

Q: 7. Will this microphone fit on a Rode blimp ?

A: Yes it will. This Rode blimp RYWKNTG will work with the Sennheiser MKH 416.

Q: 8. What deadcat fur fits the MKH-416 ?

A: The Sennheiser MKH 416 Shotgun Microphone can be used with deadcat-style furry windshields such as the Rycote 033052 Standard Hole Classic Softie Wind-Screen (B&H # RYS18M), the Auray WSS-2018 Professional Windshield for Shotgun Microphones (B&H # AUWSS2018), or the Bubblebee Industries Windkiller Long Fur Slip-On Wind Protector for 18 to 24mm Mics - Extra-Large, Black (B&H # BUBBIWKXL).

Q: 9. Is this a condenser mic?

A: Yes, the Sennheiser MKH 416-P48U3 Moisture-Resistant Shotgun Microphone is a condenser microphone and requires 48V phantom power from its XLR input source connection for operation.

Q: 10. My use case is I'm planning to have this as a boom and the talent may walk 2-3 feet around. (training - in front of a screen). The mic will be positioned overhead : How will the performance be impacted as a result? Is this still the mic for such a task?

A: This shotgun mic is highly directional, and any shift off axis from the front of the mic will result in a drop off in sound from the presenter. To use this mic, a boompole operator would need to follow the person with the mic as they move. If that is not an option, a lavalier mic on the presenter would be a better option to ensure that no matter where the presenter moves to, the audio is captured. Here's an example of a wired lav solution, B&H # SOECM77B.
