Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is it possible to split stereo signal coming from Sync E, so I'd get only timecode in CH1 and use proper shotgun mic for CH2?

A: The Tentacle Sync E mkII Timecode Generator with Bluetooth 5.0 (Dual Set) do not output a stereo signal, so if your camera has multiple inputs for audio then yes, you could rout the Sync E mkII into one of the inputs and your mic into the other. If your camera only has a single audio input then input you will not be able to use a mic along with the Tentacle Sync E mkII.

Q: 2. If I am using two mics and connecting one of these to my camera (Canon 5D IV) do I need a 3rd device to sync timecode between two mics and my camera?

A: You will need a device for each item you are looking to sync. If you have 3 separate items, you will need 3 units.

Q: 3. Can I sync Timecode with ths unit as a master with a BMPCC 6K Pro using a 3.5 mm cable?

A: Yes, the Tentacle Sync Sync E Mk2 Timecode Generator is able to pass time code to the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 6K Camera using a 3.5mm cable. Please note that you will need to go into the menu of the Pocket Cinema 6K camera to enable this feature.

Q: 4. I intend to use this device for video interviews with the following kit: 1) Nikon Z6II camera feeding video via HDMI into Atomos Ninja V; 2) Tentacle Sync-E with Lavalier mic on subject; 3) Zoom F3 with shotgun mic near subject (not connected to camera or Ninja V). How many of these TC generators would I need? I'm thinking one to sync-jam the Tentacle-E recorder, which would then be connected to the Ninja V while shooting, and one connected to the Zoom F3 (not sure if that recorder will actually accept TC?). Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

A: Two sounds correct. One Tentacle Sync E mkII Timecode Generator with Bluetooth 5.0 (Single Set) synced with the Zoom F3 which is capturing audio, and one for the NInja V which is capturing video. You can use the Tentacle Sync E mkII with the Ninja V by routing it into the mic/line input. Make sure that the Ninja is set to intake audio from the mic/line port, and then use post production software to sync.

Q: 5. Can I actually generate timecode while charing the device through usb port? It seems to add interference noises and make the recorded timecode unusable.

A: The Tentacle Sync E mkII Timecode Generator with Bluetooth 5.0 (Dual Set) (B&H# TETE2MK2) does have a USB C port that can be used to charge the device. You may be hearing RFI/EMI (i.e. radio frequency or electromagnetic interference). Such interference can often sound like a low or medium frequency hum, although radiated forms (which, by definition, pass through the air) are frequently higher. As for solving the problem, we would recommend not charging it while using it (since it does have a long battery life anyway) or at least using a battery-based source rather than an AC adapter for charging it if you'll be doing so during use. Another good alternative would be to use a USB power bank that does not require a converter (buck or boost) to produce power since those typically do generate EMI pulses. Finally, if you find that the problem exists even if there is nothing plugged into the opposite end of the USB cable from the one that is inserted into the USB C port then you may want to experiment with different USB cables to find one that is not as sensitive to (or is better shielded against) RFI or EMI radiation in the ambient environment.

Q: 6. What is the difference between MK1 and MK2 ?

A: The major difference is that the MK2 has Bluetooth 5.0 for more reliable monitoring and easier setup via phone or tablet. The battery life was also improved compared to the original. Aside from that it's identical to the old one.

Q: 7. Is there a difference in range with this version and the previous version ?

A: For now, there won't be any changes in the Bluetooth range of the Tentacle SYNC E MkII compared to the MkI. The functionality will be identical with the previous version. Possibly in future, Tentacle will be able to offer an update that allows a wider range. Currently, the range is around 10-15 meters.

Q: 8. I have 3 Cameras sometimes on set , how many of these devices I should buy ?

A: You should get one Tentacle Sync E mkII Timecode Generator with Bluetooth 5.0 for every device you are planning to sync.

Q: 9. Can the Tentacle Sync E output timecode at the same time via cable and Bluetooth? if so, could I use a single unit to feed timecode into the audio input of my camera and simultaneously via Bluetooth into a Zoom F3 with its Bluetooth module?

A: The Tentacle Sync E mkII Timecode Generator with Bluetooth 5.0 (Single Set) (B&H# TETE1MK2) cannot output timecode by Bluetooth to the Zoom F3 2-Input / 2-Track Portable Field Recorder (B&H# ZOF3) but can do so as an audio input into one of the F3's two XLR ports using the Tentacle Sync Tentacle to 3-Pin Male XLR Cable (16") (B&H# TEC04): https://bhpho.to/3BL2sTF

Q: 10. What has changed between the Mk2 and previous version?

A: The main difference that you will see with the Tentacle Sync Sync E Mk2 Sync E Timecode Generator with Bluetooth (Dual Set) is this is a revision update. The only major change is that a Bluetooth 5.0 chipset is now built in.

[2x REF] I purchased this unit for a legacy rack whose NTSC sync generator has failed. It was much less expensive than replacing the old unit, and will soon provide sync for the new HD rack via SDI with a flip of a few DIP switches. Setup is easy: Select signal format via DIP switches and plug it in.

[NTSC / PAL] Works great. Turns out that I didn't actually need it and BlackMagic Design gave me bad information about how my setup would work, but it does exactly what it is supposed to.

[NTSC / PAL] The often forgotten or neglected Sync Generator role is served well with this device. It's a set and forget kind of thing, and we've since forgotten about it while it keeps our framing reigned-in eliminating latency and complexities with TBCs and Frame Syncs.
