The Canon CN-E 14mm T3.1 L F Cinema Prime Lens EF Mountis an ultra wide-angle, manual focus prime lens that covers Full Frame and Super 35 sensor formats.

The lens offers a maximum T stop of 3.1 and has an 11-blade iris that provides round out of focus highlights for a natural looking bokeh. The lens barrel features 300° of stepless, smooth rotation from close focus to infinity, giving you a high degree of precision and consistent focus.

The lens is designed to minimize focus breathing and also has innovative glass construction that counteracts barrel expansion and contraction to avoid temperature-induced marking discrepancies. It has focus distance markings on both sides of the barrel, with the rear markings on an angled surface, making it readable from either side of the camera. It also has a dust and water resistant housing to minimize maintenance.

The CN-E 14mm and the other five CN-E lenses share the same 114m front barrel diameter, focus rotation, 36° iris rotation, and focus and iris gear positions, allowing for easier lens swaps.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Do you offer this kit in PL?

A: Canon does not offer the CN-E prime lenses as PL mount; however, there are a new line of cinema primes, the Canon Sumire lenses, which are PL mounted: Currently we offer a set of 3 lenses of the Canon Sumire Primes: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1573971-REG/canon_cn_e_sumire_prime_3_lens.html

Q: 2. Do you have experience using this specific lens with the Epic Helium 8K??

A: It is our understanding that with the RED 8K this lens will cover the sensor with possible slight vignetting in the corners.

Q: 3. Does this lens support 6k resolution? Can i put a circular ND filter & is there a 114mm circular ND filter?

A: This lens is capable of full 4K-Resolution performance. You can use 105mm screw in filters on all the Canon Cinema Prime Lenses. Here are three suggestions in good-better-best order: Tiffen 105mm Coarse Thread UV Protector Filter B&H # TIUVP105, B+W 105mm UV Haze MRC 010M Filter B&H # BWUVMC105, Sigma 105mm WR UV Filter B&H # SIUV105Q.

Q: 4. iris gear size? focus gear size?

A: 0.8 cine pitch

Q: 5. what is the filter size for screw on nd filters? thanks!

A: Canon's CN-E lenses do not have a filter thread on them. However you can use Schneider's 114mm SSLR to 4.5 Adapter Ring to put ND filters directly on the lens. They even make a kit that comes with the adapter and three ND Filters, B&H # SCCNDK.https://bhpho.to/2yCxRpi

Q: 6. Will this lens work on a Canon crop sensor 60D?

A: Yes. It will work on any full frame or aps-c canon camera.

Q: 7. What kind of horizontal distortion does this lens render on full frame around the top and bottom of the frame? Does it have barrel distortion, bulge distortion, pincushion distortion, or wave/ wiggle distortion? Do lines stay straight horizontally?

A: All extreme wide lenses exhibit some level of barrel, chromatic, and rectilinear distortion. If you wish to avoid these negatives while using wide lenses, do not get too close to your subject and cause barrel distortion or tilt and cause leaning lines. This Canon CN-E 14mm reduces all wide angle distortions to an absolute minimum. This is in keeping with the fact that this lens is meant for the Hollywood market where only the best will do. Final note: Wide and tele lenses have characteristics unique unto themselves. In the beginning of their camera career, people often look at these characteristics as negatives to be overcome. In time, the user knows what to look for and then exploits these characteristics to storytelling advantage.

Q: 8. If you had to choose one cinema lense for a short film with the C100 Mark II, is this lense a good option?

A: No, this is an ultra-wide lens and if you are shooting an entire film with one prime lens, a 35mm or 50mm would be much better. The Canon 24-105 L series zoom works perfectly with the C100 and can provide image stabilization and auto-focus as well as lens distortion correction in one compact package.

Q: 9. which one is better, this lens or Rokinon Xeen 16mm T2.6?

A: The Canon would be considered the overall superior lens. But the Rokinon Xeen lenses are terrific glass for the money that would perform admirably in most projects for most filmmakers.

Q: 10. would you recommend the cannon cn-e 35mm lens on a Blackmagic URSA Mini 4K EF camera?

A: Yes, I would. Great combination!

[Full Frame] This is a really well constructed lens. It feels like it's worth every penny. The optics are crystal clear, no distortion of any kind that I can detect. The giant focus ring turns and turns - very nice for pulling focus. On the downside, at longer distances with the aperature wide open, the depth of field is razor thin, and the focus ring has increasingly less travel between steps at further distances. I realize this is physics, but I was personally surprised by how touchy focus is at 40-50' in lower light situations.

[14mm] This is my prime go-to lens on my Canon C-300. On the set of my short film, Jupiter's Legacy, my DP and I came back to this lens again and again. Coupled with the C-300's low light capabilities, the 1.5 allowed me to shoot primarily in lovely candlelight and torchlight. We successfully lit one scene with a single 15 watt Christmas Tree bulb. This lens is tack sharp and has great contrast. I love it. The first AC loved working with the smooth focus mechanism.

[4.45 lb] I am in production now, using this lens and it's amazing, solid, sharp, yet naturally soft. I'm using it with the EOS C300 Mark II so in combination with the camera, it produces such a beautiful aesthetic straight out of the box. The lens is so well crafted. No breathing at all. It has a great weight to it. My first Canon Cine Prime Lens purchase and thus far, am totally satisfied. I will definitely be investing in more. The 35mm is a great choice for a first purchase as you can use this prime for so many applications. You could shoot an entire feature with just a 35mm if need be. I don't scoff at the price either. Artist's tools do cost. I'm a firm believer that you truly do get what you pay for.

[14mm] This lens is a beast! Shooting wide open is tack sharp, the size is huge - and night shots are unlike anything Ive ever seen. We shot with it on a C100 Mk II, C300 Mk II, and RED Dragon and when comparing the footage it was hard to tell the difference from the 100 vs 300. This lens will make your camera shine, especially if its a Canon Cinema series. That and on-set our clients have noticed it and are very impressed. This will elevate your productions to another level.

[Full Frame] The 14mm seems to cut nice with the rest of the set and is very symmetrical and doesn't have an effects look like a cheaper wide angle would have. The look is perfect on a super 35mm sensor and is even wider on a full frame. The build is awesome like all the rest of the CN-E's. The color of the primes seem to be a little bit cooler on the reds than the cn-e zooms. Great buy and good investment if EF mount doesn't freak you out.

[Canon EF] One the most-used lenses on a super 35mm sensor, the 35mm CN-E from canon has been long in coming. I think it was worth the wait. This lens ads the mechanics and housing of a true cinema lens, and improves noticeably in terms of contrast, sharpness and chromatic aberration compared it's still-camera-L-series cousin. Contrast is excellent wide open, and corner sharpness is exceptional throughout the range. The small amount of CA is largely limited to the extreme corners on a full frame camera, and is essentially negligible on super35 or other cropped sensors. I only wish the 50mm was this good.

[Full Frame] When I moved over into the Canon Cinema camera line, due to costs, I decided to go with the Rokinon cinema lenses. Initially, I thought they worked great and it was a definite upgrade from my previous setup. However after shooting with these lenses I can't even believe the difference. The color and clarity are unmatched – I even rented other lenses to compare (Zeiss, Xeen) and IMHO these Canon lenses blew them all away. They make skin tones just come to life and are sharp but not overly harsh. Worth every penny!

[Full Frame] Whew! Extreme engineering. Use the 14mm and it leaves you breathless. There really is no comparison to this lens.

[Canon EF] Think Canon cinema lenses are hype? Think again. This lens is a game changer. I have the 50mm L series f1.2 and this lens blows it away in sharpness, accuracy of focus and several other areas. Best purchase I've made for a while.
