This is my first experience with this type of lighting so before I invest in more bulbs I have a question: I tried using the two working ones using my 600EX set to its lowest setting, bouncing up to trigger the lights. However, I must be doing something wrong because even though the lights are going off they are having no effect. I know this because I took a test shot without them and there is no difference. I assume its a timing/ synch issue between the lights and the exposure. Am I making some simple amateur mistake? Should I be using a synch cord? Do these types of lights even take one? A: You would have to use the Canon flash in manual mode. The other lights will see the canon pre flash that it fires for exposure determination and fire with it. This will cause the external lights to fire before the shutter is open.

A: Yes, in my set there were flash mounts included. Cold Shoe means that it is just a physical mount for the flash, it cannot communicate with your flash, like a hot shoe would.
