[Glass] Most photographers use at least one diffusion filter for portraits, whether a professional whose clients need to look great, or the rest of us who want to flatter Granny at her 90th birthday celebration party. I have kids with iffy complexions in their adolescence and didn’t want to rely too heavily on Photoshop for the fix.

For use on my Quattro DP2, this filter does a fine job of holding small details like eyelashes, yet blends blemishes well. (One caveat: a large blackhead or dark pimple may be accentuated, depending on circumstances, so a white diffusion filter or dab of concealer could be needed.) Since the eyes and lashes/eyebrows hold their detail portraits can be very flattering with this Tiffen product.

It looks odd by itself as it appears to be glass with a pattern of little black marks all over it, where I more or less expected some type of black screen or grid. Not being an optical engineer and as well as the filter works, I chalk it up to FM.

Also, I prefer to use Tiffen products in general as they have always be good quality, competitively priced, and made in the good ol’ U. S. of A.; what’s not to like?

[Glass] I am a fine atr / abstract photographer. I use this Warm Black Diffusion filter for still life, portrait, landscape and even shots of buildings and vehicles . The color tones of my subjects are very soft...also have an almost ebony hue to them. I seldom use Photoshop...I still love using lense filters. What's not so great? I cannot think of anything right now.

[Aluminum] Most of my portraits taken in the studio with my lites, often have a hot lite appearance to them. I needed something to soften them. What this filter does is not only soften the images but lends a warming tone to the skin. With two complete photo sessions completed, my customers are quite satisfied with the results as I am.

[Glass] This filter saved my life on a shoot outdoors with a very pale Iowan at the end of winter. Midwesterners don't see the sun for months and they get really, really pale. My Tiffen Warm Soft F/X1 transformed the subject from looking like death warmed over into to a regular human being. The great thing about using the F/X1 is that you can't tell it's in use. People shot from less than 5 or 6 feet away don't look fuzzy, they just look a little better. However, out past 8 or 10 feet you can start to see that there's something weird going on. I wouldn't use it to shoot a room for instance. But at normal closeup distances, it's magical.

[Glass] Its a great portrait filter as I use it to give a warmer feel to the overall scene, but also skin tones. The softness is not too much as the subject's eyes standout. Its a great filter to keep in your bag.

[Aluminum] When I used to shoot film, I used Fuji film to get better skin tones. With my digital SLR, I was never happy with the color cast(pale) of everyone's skin. This filter is perfect. It gives the skin a pleasing tint and softens facial features so I don't have to count the pores on the subject's face.
