The nickel finish MK 21 Microphone Capsule from Schoeps comes as a matched pair, and has a directional pattern between omni and cardioid. This capsule is designed to combine the advantages of the cardioid with those of the omni. This results in a pickup pattern which blends the 2 sets of characteristics. It has full and extended low-frequency response, with less proximity effect, while picking up more room sound.

The directivity of this capsule is slightly dependent on frequency. This contrasts with omnidirectional capsules, whose directivity increases with rising frequency, and with cardioids (at least smaller ones), which tend to accentuate high frequencies that arrive at oblique angles.

This capsule has orientation that is less critical than with a cardioid, since direct sound arriving on axis and reverberant or other sounds off axis are both reproduced accurately. This lack of coloration in the off-axis pickup produces a natural sonic impression. The low directivity of this capsule type prevents it from generating large level differences for X/Y use, though M/S and near-coincident spacings are often successful.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Considering a shotgun mic for my H6. Would there be any reason to own both the SSH and SGH versions? Is the SSH just an SGH with stereo side recording capabilities?

A: Both the SSH-6 and SGH-6 are shotgun microphones, capable of capturing audio at farther distances than a traditional handheld microphone. The benefit of the SSH-6 is that it captures audio in stereo; a benefit mostly used in music and ambient sound recording. If you are just recording dialogue, the SGH-6 would be more than adequate.

Q: 2. Is the SSH-6 compatible with the Zoom F1? I have seen both yes and no. If so, does the F1 give customization options to change amount of ambient input like the H6?

A: yes just tried the F1 and SSH-6 combo and this is possible. By cycling through the REC LEVEL button you control the side mic level. Options are StGUN OFF, StGUN 30, StGUN 60, StGUN 90, StGUN 120, StGUN 150

Q: 3. does the SSH-6 require phantom power?

A: No idea, but as long as you connect it to a Zoom audio module like the F1 (the one I have), etc... it will be powered. This is for sure not a stand alone mic. It is designed to be used on capsule compatible zoom recorders. Not your question but let me tell you this thing is amazing ! Cheers.

Q: 4. Will this mic fit in the skb 1209 case? I read here that it won't due to its longer length compared to the other model shotgun mic

A: The SKB iSeries Waterproof Case for Zoom H6 Recorder and Mic Modules available on our site is customized to fit the Zoom SGH-6 Shotgun Microphone which is slightly smaller than the Zoom SSH-6 Stereo Shotgun Microphone.

Q: 5. Does the ZOOM f8 output in B and A format for use in external applications?

A: According to page 23 in the manual for the F8 I am only seeing that it supports recording to Polywav as of right now.

Q: 6. Would this mic work well with a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera? Many thanks for your answers!

A: If you are connecting this mike to a Zoom H5, H6, or Q8, and you wanted a stereo shotgun mic (as opposed to a standard mono shotgun mic) then it will work with virtually any camera. But it will not connect directly to your BMPCC without first going through a Zoom recorder.

Q: 7. What is the Bit-depth and Frequency that it records at?

A: That is dependent on the recorder being used with this capsule. When using this with the H5 or H6 recorder, you can record at 24 bit, up to 96k sample rate.

Q: 8. Can I dj with it?

A: Yes, the MK-58 PRO can be used for DJing as well as any vocal and speaking applications.

Q: 9. which one is best zoom ssh-6 or zoom sgh-6 ? if ssh-6, can i use only directional separately if i don,t want the ambience sound?

A: Both the Zoom SSH-6 and SGH-6 are excellent mic options to use with the Zoom H5/H6 recorders. Which you use depends on your application. The SSH-6 is stereo, and the SGH-6 is mono. The stereo mic will be great for recording ambience, special effects, music at a distance. The mono mic is useful for dialogue recording, especially in high noise environments.

Q: 10. if I place this device 18 away from my mouth, what is the gain level to reach -12db, and at what gain level before I can hear self-noise?

A: I don't know but this mic is the best mic I have used on this recorder!!

[30 Hz to 20 kHz] Well, these Neumann mics are just the very best I have ever used for acoustic guitar. I've tried everything, all the way up to the highest quality ribbon mic, and these small diaghram Neumann mics are just what's needed. I have not compared them with competing quality small diaghram mics, but this is a great stereo pair for what I need - recording classical guitar and steel string acoustic guitar. I'm looking no further.

[0.6 oz (17.0 g)] The new CMC1 is great, super small, awesome for gigs. I have it for only 2 weeks, but the few times I used I was very happy!

[13 mV/Pa] I'm using the MK8 with a Schoeps miniCMIT for my M/S setup and I'm extremely pleased with my field recording and SFX results. I wouldn't trade this for anything.

[13 mV/Pa] It's a beautiful microphone. I bought it because I wanted something clean that I could distort according to my needs in post and this has that flexibility as well as having a standalone beautiful sound.

[0.6 oz (17.0 g)] Schoeps says that there's no discernible difference in sound quality, but when I heard this one, I put my CMC6 up for sale immediately.

The higher SPLs do make a difference; and to my ear the CMC1 has a more clean and transparent sound to it. I know that sounds lame, but it's hard to describe. This CMC1 is amazing.

HIGHLY recommended.

[13 mV/Pa] I'm a professional classical guitarist and these mics (like the other km 184 mics I have used) are top quality with excellent sound reproduction. As classical guitarists will tell you, recording a good classical guitar sound is difficult. These mics are an important part of the recording chain (the others being excellent cables, good preamps and ad da converters).

[13 mV/Pa] Can never fault these microphones, but wish the case had cut outs for the included clips included like the standard stereo set does.

[30 Hz to 20 kHz] Very natural open sound...smooth.. So far have only used them to record acoustic guitar and tambourine but I was really pleased with the results. I have been using AKG P170s and have made nice recording with those mics but these mics are in a different league. The difference I hear is not subtle...excited about using them for other applications...
