The matte gray MK 22 Microphone Capsule from Schoeps comes as a matched pair, and has open cardioid directional pattern, occupying a point on the spectrum between the wide cardioid and classic cardioid patterns. The response is -5 dB at 90° and there is 16 dB suppression of rear-incident sound. It is in essence a variant cardioid which balances a very natural sound quality with a good degree of directionality.

This capsule’s sonic transparency and good suppression of rear-incident sound make it a universal problem-solver. This capsule has wide cardioid that offers an alternative when its lower directivity fits the recording situation, e.g., for the first desk of strings or for solo piano.

This capsule has been developed for use as a spot microphone. It unites the strengths of the MK 4 and MK 21 capsules. Its directivity is essentially constant throughout the frequency range. Its inherent low-frequency response is somewhat more pronounced than that of the cardioid, while proximity effect is somewhat less. This capsule is well suited for use as stereo pairs.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. do you use photo or matt black ink for this canvas?

A: Matte Black

Q: 2. can I use it on my EPSON R2880?

A: Hi Jaime...I used this on my Epson4900 and it worked out great!! Love the images!

Q: 3. how about the P600?

A: Yes, this paper would work with the Epson P600 printer.

Q: 4. Should this canvas be varnished after printing?

A: Unless its behind glass, yes it should be protected from scratches and UV by several coats of clear finish. Some like Eco Print Shield by Premier Art are water soluble and are put on by a dense cell roller. I use three coats typically 2 Matte coats and a Satin final coat. Only the last coat determines whether it ends up glossy, matte or satin. The coats dry quickly in about 20mins each. The canvas can be stretched after it is coated.

Q: 5. can this canvas paper be used in my Epson Stylus Pro 7880?

A: Yes, the Epson Exhibition Canvas Matte Archival Inkjet Paper (24" x 40' Roll) BH #EPECM2440 is compatible with the Epson 7880.

Q: 6. Is this compatible with epson p9000?

A: Yes, you might have to add some contrast, but it works okay.

Q: 7. What size is the core of this roll? Will it fit an Epson R2000?

A: The core is 2 and worked great with my R1800

Q: 8. is this compatable with the Epson 4900 ???

A: Epson 4900 Printer certainly can. You do need the roll handling set up which is optional. Once you get that you can use the roll canvas. It has a roll paper cutter already built in that will cut the roll papers for you, once you set up the printer for roll feed. However, I would not recommend the built in cutter for canvas. Make sure you turn it off in the options for roll feed. And cut the canvas after printing manually. Use Matte paper set up for the canvas. It will switch the inks aromatically to Matt Black Ink. good luck.

Q: 9. can you use photo black with this paper?

A: This canvas is setup for matte black. While it might be possible to program your printer to use photo black instead of matte black, out of the box the printer will want to use matte.

Q: 10. Just purchased after wanting this canvas for over 6 months. Going to finally give it a try. Question--I have heard on other forums about the difficulty in feeding it (I have a 3880). Does anyone have any tips on making the feeding easier?

A: Unfortunately, you have to do some trickery to make it work. Try as I might, I could not get my printer to pick up the canvas without adding a strip of paper onto the bottom of the canvas. For some reason it picks up the paper perfectly but the canvas gives issues. I recommend getting a piece of 17inch paper and cutting it to be 17 x3 and marking a line at the 1 mark. Simply tape the back of the canvas to the piece of paper with the 1 sticking out for the printer to pick up, then offset the work by 1 in photoshop or whatever program you use. There are tutorials online as well, which you have probably seen.

[0.8 lb] Can never fault these microphones, but wish the case had cut outs for the included clips included like the standard stereo set does.

[0.6 oz (17.0 g)] I already own an mk4, and I wanted to get a second mk4 so I could record a stereo pair for piano and acoustic guitar and it sounds so good. The mk4 I already own, I've had for about 4 years now, and it's my go to mic for everything -- strings, piano, guitar, voice. I have tried many many mics above and below this price point and to my ears, none sound as natural. I rarely need EQ when using schoeps mics. It also matches my other mk4 perfectly. Very happy with the purchase. Also B+H customer service was great and the capsule arrived quickly.

[14 mV/Pa] The new CMC1 is great, super small, awesome for gigs. I have it for only 2 weeks, but the few times I used I was very happy!

[40 Hz to 20 kHz] They're Schoeps so there's little to say about that. I've used this stereo set in a variety of ways. From recording choirs to field recording train stations and dance rehearsals. They're crystal clear and capture sound exactly as you hear it. It's incredible how compact they are. The preamps are compatible with other Schoeps Colette capsules so there's a lot of modularity you can get with this set.

You're making a big investment with this stereo set and you get what you pay for.

[0.6 oz (17.0 g)] Schoeps says that there's no discernible difference in sound quality, but when I heard this one, I put my CMC6 up for sale immediately.

The higher SPLs do make a difference; and to my ear the CMC1 has a more clean and transparent sound to it. I know that sounds lame, but it's hard to describe. This CMC1 is amazing.

HIGHLY recommended.

[14 mV/Pa] I use a pair of these for my MS setup(cmc1’s, mk8, mk22). When these were released in 2019 it was welcomed with open arms. I went from a 13” to 6.7” Rycote windshield. Amazing! Size and weight is a big deal for me as I hike to my locations and I carry the mentioned MS setup plus an ORTF(2 ccm4’s). They perform excellent as expected and they draw less battery power than the CMC6. I had no reason to not own a pair.

[40 Hz to 20 kHz] I'm using this mic to not over to provide voice-over commentary for a documentary that I'm working on, but also for Zoom meetings. Together, with the absolutely tiny stand (Schoeps TCg Miniature Table Stand), the mic is a discrete 'boom' mic that disappears on the desktop and avoids extraneous room sounds. While expensive, the quality and size are unbeatable.

And if you're already using the mic for its typical use, it can now dual-purpose as a very high quality desktop mic using the Schoeps TCg stand.

[0.6 oz (17.0 g)] MK22 cartridges are halfway between the MK21 Wide Cardioid and the MK4 Cardioid - fairly directional but with extended base response. I frequently record in highly reverberant venues, such as cathedrals. Used as space microphones, the MK22 gives a clear sound with good stereo image, and a good balance with ambience. I plan to use them on a 1 meter stereo in ORTF configuration, with a pair of spaced MK22 microphones. Omnis tend to be muddy in this application and cards lose the warmth I seek. The MK22s will form the core sound - everything else is just for emphasis. MK22s are also effective for chamber music, often in conjunction with a pair of MK2H (far field) Omnis.

[40 Hz to 20 kHz] While it took 11 weeks for them to arrive (due to Covid), I am very pleased to have this matched pair. They are great as a main pickup or for spot mic'ing. When neither a cardioid or an omni capsule will do, this is the perfect choice.

[0.8 lb] It's a beautiful microphone. I bought it because I wanted something clean that I could distort according to my needs in post and this has that flexibility as well as having a standalone beautiful sound.
