The nickel finish MK 22 Microphone Capsule from Schoeps comes as a matched pair, and has open cardioid directional pattern, occupying a point on the spectrum between the wide cardioid and classic cardioid patterns. The response is -5 dB at 90° and there is 16 dB suppression of rear-incident sound. It is in essence a variant cardioid which balances a very natural sound quality with a good degree of directionality.

This capsule’s sonic transparency and good suppression of rear-incident sound make it a universal problem-solver. This capsule has wide cardioid that offers an alternative when its lower directivity fits the recording situation, e.g., for the first desk of strings or for solo piano.

This capsule has been developed for use as a spot microphone. It unites the strengths of the MK 4 and MK 21 capsules. Its directivity is essentially constant throughout the frequency range. Its inherent low-frequency response is somewhat more pronounced than that of the cardioid, while proximity effect is somewhat less. This capsule is well suited for use as stereo pairs.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this Polsen GPMK-22 GoPro Production Microphone Kit compatible with the Hero 4 Black?

A: Yes, I use these microphones with a Hero 4 Black. They should work with any Hero 4 or Hero 3 series camera, not sure about the Hero 5. The Hero 5 session has a USB-C connector, so it won't work with those cameras.

Q: 2. Will this work with GoPro 7 Black ? Does it need different mount ?

A: As already mentioned, this will only work with GoPro cameras with a micro-usb port. The Gopro 5, 6, and presumably the new 7 have usb-c ports. I have been unable to find an adapter which would allow for that connection.

Q: 3. Does this work ONLY with the Revo Quick Release Frame or is it compatible with the GoPro Frame and other protective bodies?

A: It is compatible with the Go Pro Frame. The mic is really good. I have two of them and the sound quality is amazing.

Q: 4. The exact diameter and length of the mic isn't listed. I'm trying to find a foam screen for this mic. I'm aware the mic comes with a windscreen. Can anyone help me out?

A: The Zoom SSH-6 has a 1 diameter. It is also about 6 long. The Auray WSF-2216 (B&H # AUWSF2216) is currently the best available option. It is a bit longer than 6 , which means you will probably have to cut it slightly to fit the microphone.

Q: 5. I'm wondering: is the SSH-6 as good as the SGH-6 in terms of directional 'power'? Or do i need to move it closer to the subject than with the SGH-6?

A: I conducted several tests using both the SGH-6 and the SSH-6. The SSH-6 is 1 inch longer than the SGH-6. The end of the microphone was moved back by 1 inch for each SSH-6 test. So, the distance from the end of the microphone to my mouth was always the same for both. I conducted the tests at 6 inches, 1 foot, 2 feet, and 3 feet. In each case to achieve a level above 12 dB but below 6 dB I adjusted the gain on the microphone. In all cases the two microphones required the same gain. The side stereo level on the SSH-6 was set to 0 dBfor all test. So, I would say to your question, Yes, the power and beam for the shotgun portion of the two microphones are the same.

Q: 6. Can someone from B & H or Polsen verify that this model will work with the Hero 5?

A: No it will not. :(Quite sure of the answer, because I have one of each.

Q: 7. What are the exact dimensions of the ssh-6 microphone?

A: Exact dimensions for the Zoom SSH-6 Stereo Shotgun Microphone Capsule for H5, H6, U-44 and Q8 have not been provided by Zoom.

Q: 8. Is it weather resistant?

A: Unfortunately no.

Q: 9. What type of frequency is used UHF or VHF?

A: The Midland LXT500VP3 uses FRS and GMRS services which operate in the UHF band.

Q: 10. Does this mic record to three tracks; the mid to one, and the stereo side to two? If not, how would one go about mixing dialogue with ambient sound in post?

A: It is only 2 tracks. The mono mic will pick up the dialog as any shotgun would straight ahead. Then the desired amount of side can be mixed in accordingly.

[14 mV/Pa] MK22 cartridges are halfway between the MK21 Wide Cardioid and the MK4 Cardioid - fairly directional but with extended base response. I frequently record in highly reverberant venues, such as cathedrals. Used as space microphones, the MK22 gives a clear sound with good stereo image, and a good balance with ambience. I plan to use them on a 1 meter stereo in ORTF configuration, with a pair of spaced MK22 microphones. Omnis tend to be muddy in this application and cards lose the warmth I seek. The MK22s will form the core sound - everything else is just for emphasis. MK22s are also effective for chamber music, often in conjunction with a pair of MK2H (far field) Omnis.

[0.6 oz (17.0 g)] Excellent clarity for a 100 member symphonic band recording mic. Very pleased with the purchase.

[40 Hz to 20 kHz] Its a Schoeps, how can you go wrong?! I bought it primarily for music m/s recording. And I look forward to its performance.

[14 mV/Pa] I already own an mk4, and I wanted to get a second mk4 so I could record a stereo pair for piano and acoustic guitar and it sounds so good. The mk4 I already own, I've had for about 4 years now, and it's my go to mic for everything -- strings, piano, guitar, voice. I have tried many many mics above and below this price point and to my ears, none sound as natural. I rarely need EQ when using schoeps mics. It also matches my other mk4 perfectly. Very happy with the purchase. Also B+H customer service was great and the capsule arrived quickly.

[40 Hz to 20 kHz] Well, these Neumann mics are just the very best I have ever used for acoustic guitar. I've tried everything, all the way up to the highest quality ribbon mic, and these small diaghram Neumann mics are just what's needed. I have not compared them with competing quality small diaghram mics, but this is a great stereo pair for what I need - recording classical guitar and steel string acoustic guitar. I'm looking no further.

[0.6 oz (17.0 g)] On top of the fantastic sound quality, with the stereo setup you can easily hear where and how far the source of the sound is - easy to choose how much close details to pick up vs more natural sound from a bit of a distance.

[14 mV/Pa] Schoeps says that there's no discernible difference in sound quality, but when I heard this one, I put my CMC6 up for sale immediately.

The higher SPLs do make a difference; and to my ear the CMC1 has a more clean and transparent sound to it. I know that sounds lame, but it's hard to describe. This CMC1 is amazing.

HIGHLY recommended.

[0.6 oz (17.0 g)] Very natural open sound...smooth.. So far have only used them to record acoustic guitar and tambourine but I was really pleased with the results. I have been using AKG P170s and have made nice recording with those mics but these mics are in a different league. The difference I hear is not subtle...excited about using them for other applications...

[40 Hz to 20 kHz] While it took 11 weeks for them to arrive (due to Covid), I am very pleased to have this matched pair. They are great as a main pickup or for spot mic'ing. When neither a cardioid or an omni capsule will do, this is the perfect choice.
