Styled in a producer finish, the Genelec 8040B is a single 2-way active studio monitor designed to provide accurate mix referencing for audio engineers, musicians, and producers in project studios, small to medium-sized control rooms, broadcast trucks, or mobile setups. It features a 90W amp driving a 6.5” woofer and a 90W amp pushing a 3/4” metal-dome tweeter, producing a frequency response of 45 Hz to 21 kHz.

A proprietary waveguide enhances imaging, while the bass reflex port extends the low-frequency response. The aluminum enclosure is shaped to minimize diffraction. It supports a balanced input via an XLR 3-pin connector. Room compensation options include high- and low-frequency adjustments. There is a selectable power-saving mode that enables automatic power up/down via a signal-sensing circuit.

The 8040B offers multiple mounting options including threaded holes for compatibility with OmniMount and K&M brackets, and an Iso-Pod isolation stand.

Q: 1. Is the carry bag for the stand or the reflectors?

A: The carry bag is for the background.

Q: 2. Have the background open and mounted for about a month now. Not only are wrinkles still present but there are pockets here and there and they do show on video. Steaming from what I read here takes care of the wrinkles. What fix does the manufacturer suggest to get rid of the pockets? Is there for example a technique for pulling the fabric around the rim? Can someone please describe the steps to take? Thanks.

A: Aside from steaming the wrinkles out, it is best to make sure that the wire frame within the background is not kinked in any way, which could be the cause of the pockets you're referring to. If using the white side, you can always light the background completely, which will essentially hide any imperfections on it.

Q: 3. I'm not a professional photographer, and I can't figure out the backdrop connects to the stand. Help? B&H, I really hope you have a video for this one.

Q: 4. This product advertises a reversible Blue/Gray screen, I'm searching for a green screen, can I get the same result with either color?

A: No, only with the blue side. The grey is not for chroma key, just standard shooting.

Q: 5. I need this for taking family portraits at church for our church directory. How many adult size people can you easily fit on this background without having to be no farther than about 12 ft from your subjects for zooming in to contain everything? Thank you!

A: 2-3 people max, if you hang it horizontally and are only shooting head and shoulders, maybe 4 people.

Q: 6. Does anyone have experience with traveling on an airplane with this item How did you manage it?

A: This would be less than ideal. A Westcott X-Drop system would be far easier to transport.

Q: 7. At 3.3 pounds, how sturdy is the stand, really?

A: The stand is suitable for holding up the background in the kit. It is not suitable for a large light.

Q: 8. Is it possible to unscrew the reflector clip and replace it with a studio light or flash?

A: You can remove the background clip. This stand is sized for the background so use your judgement when using it for other purposes. Make sure not to exceed the weight rating.

Q: 9. What is the diameter of this when folded up and placed back in it's case?

A: The background is around 27" and the stand is 27.6"

Q: 10. Can this be use horizontally (i.e. 7' wide)?

A: Yes.

[115 dB] Very accurate and neutral near-field monitors with enormous dynamic range. Perfect for hi-res audio playback as well as recording monitoring. Built in and very clever sound isolation mounts that, in most cases, eliminate the need for third-party additions. Rear panel equalization settings accommodates most environments. 5

[Vertical] all genelecs that I've worked with have been amazing. great sound quality and precision and inspiring to work with. the only downside is the price which is worth it. 5

[0.05%] Perhaps shameful, but I don't use these to monitor. I just wanted something for a second (desktop) system that would be good enough for me to give up head phones for general listening, and keep me from a frustrating return. I considered these for several months before making the deal at B&H. Maybe overkill, but I'm a former musician, and I know correct timbre, distortion effects, etc., and that's what I expect from playback. I've had these for six months. I run them with the desktop bass roll-off, and I have no complaints; only praise. The detail, accuracy and lack of fatigue means they get a lot of use. I just upgraded my DAC, and I can say that these monitors, like any real transducer, are very responsive to better source electronics. The driver grilles are a necessity, IMO, and contributed to my decision to go with Genelec over Focal, or the Gene 040's, as did the auto-off feature. This is just a great product, and, like most great products, comes at a commensorate price. Still considering a sub option, as a sub always enlarges the apparent sound field of a near field, or any smaller-driver speaker system, in a (usually) spectacular fashion. I can't imagine anyone not being satisfied with the designed capabilities of this monitor. 5

[3 kHz] I bought a pair of these to use with a guitar amp simulator. They sound great and allow for getting the amplifier and effects tone without having to crank up the volume to concert levels. 5

[Producer Gray] Upgraded from 8040A with auto stand by feature. Practically the same. Very sturdy. Great for tracking (recording) and editing but not for mixing (as with any near-field out there) 5

[Vertical] Buy it. You won't regret it. For playback these are wonderful. Sounds so clear and for well produced/mixed music you hear everything. Vice versa for things that aren't. You hear everything. I still use headphones to properly mix/edit with. 5

[3 kHz] These small monitors are tiny but produce very high levels with low distortion and great clarity. Very easy to carry in the bag specific to the model. These are really incredible for the size! I have Focal Twins in the main studio and these in an auxiliary room. The white model is also beautiful and takes very little space on a small desktop. 5
