Schoeps Mk 5 Microphone Capsule Matched Pair Matte Gray

Schoeps Mk 5 Microphone Capsule Matched Pair Matte Gray
  • Product Code: eq173333
  • Availability: In Stock

$7,290.00 $11,226.60

The matte gray MK 5 Microphone Capsule from Schoeps comes as a matched pair, and offers 2 selectable directional patterns, but uses only a single membrane, a no-compromise approach. The fact that full response is maintained to the high audible frequencies is unusual for a switchable-pattern microphone.

In its omnidirectional setting, this MK 5 Microphone Capsule is a true pressure transducer with smooth, extended low-frequency response, low sensitivity to most wind and breath noise, handling noise or mechanical vibration, and no proximity effect. This capsule has a cardioid setting that retains its full directionality even at very low frequencies. The benefits of this design are in its purity and clarity of sound which is immediately audible. This capsule has a slight high-frequency emphasis.

The MK 5 Microphone Capsule is nearly an all-purpose capsule. It is recommended for those starting out with the Colette series.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can we mix the directional shotgun mono with the stereo ambience in post? Or is the mix embedded into the audio track as set on the device?

A: The mix will be a mid-side stereo track. You would need mid-side decoder plug-in software to separate the mono mic and the bi-directional mic stereo track in post production.

Q: 2. Would this mic work well with a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera? Many thanks for your answers!

A: If you are connecting this mike to a Zoom H5, H6, or Q8, and you wanted a stereo shotgun mic (as opposed to a standard mono shotgun mic) then it will work with virtually any camera. But it will not connect directly to your BMPCC without first going through a Zoom recorder.

Q: 3. Does this work with the H8?

A: Yes, this will work with the H8.

Q: 4. Can this remote be used for the Zoom H6?

A: The correct remote to be used with the Zoom H6 is the Auray RC-ZH6. The RC-ZH5 is designed for the H5.

Q: 5. Will this mic fit in the skb 1209 case? I read here that it won't due to its longer length compared to the other model shotgun mic

A: The SKB iSeries Waterproof Case for Zoom H6 Recorder and Mic Modules available on our site is customized to fit the Zoom SGH-6 Shotgun Microphone which is slightly smaller than the Zoom SSH-6 Stereo Shotgun Microphone.

Q: 6. What kind of distance will this work with, roughly?

A: There is no specification for the operating distance. Variables like ambient noise, sound level of the subject, indoors or outdoors, size and composition of the inside space and flooring, wall and ceiling are all factors to consider. In general - get your mics as close to the source as possible.

Q: 7. What's the max dB SPL this mic can handle? thanks

A: A maximum SPL rating for the Zoom SSH-6 Stereo Shotgun Microphone Capsule for H5, H6, U-44 and Q8 has not been provided by the manufacturer.

Q: 8. When using this in RAW (mid and side recorded separately, to balance later in post, rather than blending while recording) on the H5, can the H5 still record a second back-up track at reduced gain? From the little I've read on the tech of mid-side, I'm thinking it could work: capsule's stereo file 1 of 2 is mono-mid on left channel and mono-side on right channel, leaving capsule's stereo file 2 of 2 to record same at -12dB. Good guess, or wishful thinking?

A: Yes!

Q: 9. The exact diameter and length of the mic isn't listed. I'm trying to find a foam screen for this mic. I'm aware the mic comes with a windscreen. Can anyone help me out?

A: The Zoom SSH-6 has a 1 diameter. It is also about 6 long. The Auray WSF-2216 (B&H # AUWSF2216) is currently the best available option. It is a bit longer than 6 , which means you will probably have to cut it slightly to fit the microphone.

Q: 10. I'm wondering: is the SSH-6 as good as the SGH-6 in terms of directional 'power'? Or do i need to move it closer to the subject than with the SGH-6?

A: I conducted several tests using both the SGH-6 and the SSH-6. The SSH-6 is 1 inch longer than the SGH-6. The end of the microphone was moved back by 1 inch for each SSH-6 test. So, the distance from the end of the microphone to my mouth was always the same for both. I conducted the tests at 6 inches, 1 foot, 2 feet, and 3 feet. In each case to achieve a level above 12 dB but below 6 dB I adjusted the gain on the microphone. In all cases the two microphones required the same gain. The side stereo level on the SSH-6 was set to 0 dBfor all test. So, I would say to your question, Yes, the power and beam for the shotgun portion of the two microphones are the same.

[0.4 lb] I use a pair of these for my MS setup(cmc1’s, mk8, mk22). When these were released in 2019 it was welcomed with open arms. I went from a 13” to 6.7” Rycote windshield. Amazing! Size and weight is a big deal for me as I hike to my locations and I carry the mentioned MS setup plus an ORTF(2 ccm4’s). They perform excellent as expected and they draw less battery power than the CMC6. I had no reason to not own a pair.

[0.4 lb] Schoeps says that there's no discernible difference in sound quality, but when I heard this one, I put my CMC6 up for sale immediately.

The higher SPLs do make a difference; and to my ear the CMC1 has a more clean and transparent sound to it. I know that sounds lame, but it's hard to describe. This CMC1 is amazing.

HIGHLY recommended.

[0.4 lb] I'm using this with a CMC6 and a CMIT5U for an M/S rig. I know there has been some debate on Gearslutz regarding Schoeps vs Sennheiser for this application but to my ears, the sound is great. Gives me an accurate and clear reproduction of the sounds being recorded. It's pricey but I'm not afraid to pay for the results that I get using this gear.

[0.4 lb] They're Schoeps so there's little to say about that. I've used this stereo set in a variety of ways. From recording choirs to field recording train stations and dance rehearsals. They're crystal clear and capture sound exactly as you hear it. It's incredible how compact they are. The preamps are compatible with other Schoeps Colette capsules so there's a lot of modularity you can get with this set.

You're making a big investment with this stereo set and you get what you pay for.

[0.4 lb] MK22 cartridges are halfway between the MK21 Wide Cardioid and the MK4 Cardioid - fairly directional but with extended base response. I frequently record in highly reverberant venues, such as cathedrals. Used as space microphones, the MK22 gives a clear sound with good stereo image, and a good balance with ambience. I plan to use them on a 1 meter stereo in ORTF configuration, with a pair of spaced MK22 microphones. Omnis tend to be muddy in this application and cards lose the warmth I seek. The MK22s will form the core sound - everything else is just for emphasis. MK22s are also effective for chamber music, often in conjunction with a pair of MK2H (far field) Omnis.

[0.4 lb] It's a beautiful microphone. I bought it because I wanted something clean that I could distort according to my needs in post and this has that flexibility as well as having a standalone beautiful sound.

[0.4 lb] Can never fault these microphones, but wish the case had cut outs for the included clips included like the standard stereo set does.

[0.4 lb] I'm using this mic to not over to provide voice-over commentary for a documentary that I'm working on, but also for Zoom meetings. Together, with the absolutely tiny stand (Schoeps TCg Miniature Table Stand), the mic is a discrete 'boom' mic that disappears on the desktop and avoids extraneous room sounds. While expensive, the quality and size are unbeatable.

And if you're already using the mic for its typical use, it can now dual-purpose as a very high quality desktop mic using the Schoeps TCg stand.
