Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. After BMDs announcements at NAB2024 is this part deprecated in favor of the new 2110 IP Mini BiDirect 12G?

A: No, the Blackmagic Design Mini Converter Optical Fiber 12G-SDI will still have it's use cases. You should get the signal convertor that best suits your specific workflow.

Q: 2. Can this run off a battery?

A: Yes. Comes with an AC to 12V DC power supply so you can run on 12V DC if you do not have reason to use any other voltage within the specified 6-36V DC. Just be careful not to mix the polarity, I am not sure its reverse polarity protected.

Q: 3. On the transmit end, will the SDI out work as a loop out of the SDI input, or is it strictly wired to only work with the fiber output?

A: The SDI Out is not a loop but an output from the fiber.

Q: 4. Is the bidirectionality simultaneous? Or is it one or the other?

A: The Blackmagic Design Mini Converter Optical Fiber 12G-SDI is multi-rate and has bidirectional capability.

Q: 5. Are these compatible with the ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K?

A: Yes, the Blackmagic Design Studio Fiber Converter can be used with the Blackmagic Design ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K.

Q: 6. Is there an SFP for this that can do Multimode om3 fiber?

A: The Black Magic SFP options only support Duplex LC Connectors compatible with singlemode Fiber. Compatible with Singlemode Fiber Black Magic SFP options. https://bhpho.to/3P511DN

Q: 7. Does this aplifying the SDI signal or just transsfering?

A: This mini converter converts SDI to optical Fiber and will also convert optical fiber back to SDI. For long runs, you can have one at each end or directly connect fiber to many of the Blackmagic products.

Q: 8. Will this work with Multi Mode fiber? Has anyone tried?

A: I have not tried this, but the adapter does not come with a SFP module so it would be worth a try. They recommend SMF because it loses less than MMF. I used 10Gtek 10G-SFP-LR modules and they work great. Blackmagic says it works with any SFP modules so I imagine it will work with MMF but no guarantees.

Q: 9. Is there a single mode Fiber Camera Extension for black magic? If these are at a stadium and my control room is 1/2 mile away?

A: Currently there is no Blackmagic single mode fiber extension for the Blackmagic Design Studio Fiber Converter. You may wish to consider the Sony Single Mode Fiber Camera Extension Adapter BH #SOHDCE100 • MFR #HDCE100.

Q: 10. Will an ATEM switcher control tally via ethernet or do you still need to run a GPI Tally Interface for these?

A: The ATEM switcher provides tally over the SDI connection. You connect the ATEM Program out to the Studio Fiber Converter SDI input #1 and assign a camera number. The camera will get tally in this way. You may optionally wire a 3rd party tally to the DB-25 connector but that has nothing to do with the ATEM and is not necessary.

[1310 nm] I am impressed to say the least. I brought two units and they are being used well over 500 feet. I have had no issues with signal degrading. I highly recommend this unit if you need to tranfer data over a very long distance.
