Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can it work with AkiTio Thunder 2 to provide eGPU support for new DELL XPS 15 that supports TB3?

A: I have a Akitio Thunder 2 Quad and it works great on my Asus laptop (ux501vw). Totally transparent.

Q: 2. Can I use this adapter to connect my Dell Precision laptop with Thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2 Black Magic Ultra studio express capture card with no issues? I will be testing this, just wondering if anyone knows the answer.

A: I ordered the StarTech thunderbolt adapter to connect my Motu 1248 audio interface (which uses thunderbolt 2) to my Dell XPS thunderbolt 3 port. This device has worked flawlessly ever since I purchased it. The Motu 1248 is a very advanced and complicated interface, so my thinking is if it works for the Motu, it should work for just about everything.

Q: 3. Is there a split version of this cable? I would need it to attach a thunderbolt device to the macbook retina. Of course then I loose the power charging cable. or would the macbook get power from thunderbolt devices?

A: This cable will not work with the retina MacBook because the retina MacBook has no Thinderbolt capability. The retina MacBook has a USB-C port but it only supports USB 3.1, not Thunderbolt. This adapter requires that Thundebolt 3 be supported behind a USB-C type port in the computer. As of July 2016, no Mac supports Thunderbolt 3 behind a USB-C connector, although this capability will most likely be integrated in Macs coming out in the fall 2016.

Q: 4. will this work with with a blue yeti mic

A: Yes, this is compatible with the Blue Yeti microphone.

Q: 5. I have a thunderbolt black magic intensity game capture, will this convert the original thunderbolt up to a usb type c so then i can use it on my Asus ROG?

A: Providing your Asus ROG has Thunderbolt 3 included in its USB-C specification, this adapter will work with standard Thunderbolt, and Thunderbolt 2 devices.

Q: 6. can i use it to connect my antalope orion+ (thunderbolt) to usb c port on my asus motherboard?

A: This would fully depend on the Asus Motherboard. Note that not all USB-C ports support Thunderbolt 3. If yours does, this StarTech Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt Adapter will be compatible.

Q: 7. How does the 1.2 measure up for landscape shots?

A: The Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.2 is actually very sharp at f/1.2. However I would recommend not shooting landscapes at f/1.2 unless you were doing astrophotography.

Q: 8. Can this be used to connect an HP ZBook with Thunderbolt 3 to a Sony Beta J-30SDI player? There would be 3 adapters: Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt, Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 (9 pin), then Firewire 800 to Firewire 400 (6-pin).

A: I haven't connected a PC to a Sony VTR since the BVU models were prevalent, however I have used the TBT3 to attach 1394a & b audio interfaces to a Thinkpad P70 instead of ZBook G3. The FW inferfaces are Apple-centric with the LSI(Agere) chip, one being the Apple TB-FW inline adapter and the other is in an OWC Thunberbolt 2 dock. I've run them one at a time off of the TBT3 as well as daisy-chaining the Apple adapter to the OWC. The daisy chain setup successfully records simultaneously from an RME FF800 and FF802.

Q: 9. I'm looking at a Display that has USB C connectivity, This display can handle video and data through it when connected to a 1 port USB type C Macbook. Would I be able to get display and data from the USB C port to a thunderbolt 2 equipped Macbook with this adapter?

A: As the current MacBook does not support Thunderbolt, you would not be able to use a USB C to Thunderbolt adapter such as the StarTech Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt Adapter to add that ability.

Q: 10. Will this work with a fujifilm x100v camera? I want to record and monitor audio using a Rhode mic and Senal headphones. I have an adapter to plug the StarTech into the camera's audio mic port.

A: No, the StarTech Headset Adapter will not work as desired with the FUJIFILM X100V Digital Camera. This adapter works with a TRRS input/output connection that is capable of sending signal in both directions simultaneously, commonly found on smartphone and some computer headset connections. The 2.5mm microphone input connection on the X100V is an input only, and will not also send output signal to be monitored via headphones. It is suggested to use the microphone input and headphone output connections of the X100V independently in this scenario.

[Yes] I got a couple new DisplayPorts to connect my BenQ monitors with my Dell 6000S docking station. These are super solid! I like how they sort of clip into each socket so they never fall out on their own.
