Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this work with Toshiba KIRA laptop or a Samsung Chromebook XE303C12? I bought some adapters similar to this (should have come to you first!) and they work on my iPad but not on these devices. Maybe something to do with the 3 lines and how they are setup? THANKS! LOVE your site!

A: I bought it to use with the headphone that has built in microphone but it did not work with my laptop Lenovo ThinkPad. I returned it.

Q: 2. does it work with LOGITECH Z607 5.1 SURROUND SOUND SPEAKER SYSTEM WITH BLUETOOTH ?

A: i don't see why not. you will need to provide 3.5mm jack to connect with startech.

Q: 3. if my laptop doesn't read cd can you send me the drivers online?

A: Yes, the manufacturers website has them posted at https://www.startech.com/en-us/cards-adapters/icusbaudio7d

Q: 4. Is there a split version of this cable? I would need it to attach a thunderbolt device to the macbook retina. Of course then I loose the power charging cable. or would the macbook get power from thunderbolt devices?

A: This cable will not work with the retina MacBook because the retina MacBook has no Thinderbolt capability. The retina MacBook has a USB-C port but it only supports USB 3.1, not Thunderbolt. This adapter requires that Thundebolt 3 be supported behind a USB-C type port in the computer. As of July 2016, no Mac supports Thunderbolt 3 behind a USB-C connector, although this capability will most likely be integrated in Macs coming out in the fall 2016.

Q: 5. I have Mac with Thunderbolt 3 need to connect to thunderbolt2 Harddisk. is this compatible?

A: I bought two of this Startech adapter. Both are attached to a PC with dual Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports. One adapter is connected to Thunderbolt 2 device, and the other to a Thunderbolt 1 device. Both devices are recognized by Windows through the Thunderbolt interface and I/O works fine in both directions. No issues whatsoever.

Q: 6. What is the power spec? Can it be used outside of the USA?

A: The system requirements as far as power goes is a USB port. So as long as you have a computer with a USB port and the right Windows or Mac system it should work.

Q: 7. Will this allow the Seagate HDD//8TB to connect to my 2012 macbook pro?

A: This adapter is currently thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2/1 connection only and is mainly used on PC to connect older thunderbolt hard drives. No macs currently support thunderbolt 3. I managed to create a 10Gb network connection between a PC and a Mac Pro using this adapter.

Q: 8. It says here that it works on Mac but in StarTech web page there are no drives or especification that it works with OSX.Do you think it will work on a Macbook Pro 2013 with OSX 10.10?

A: The answer to your question is a resounding yes. It is fully compatible w/ OSX, I have used it for some time on multiple versions of OSX. I can not however tell you definitively if OSX 10.10 will be an issue. But from my experience w/ this device I highly doubt there will be an issue.Runs great, the only issue I have w/ this device is optical input outputs, not inherently being routable. You may use a 3rd party software i.e. Audio Hijack to accomplish this. Hope this gives you peace of mind. I would highly recommend this device.

Q: 9. Is this compatible with OS X Sierra (v 10.12)?

A: I would guess not. Not only is it unlikely ant 10.12 compatable hardware has standard PCI ports, the manufacturer has a poor record with drivers. I was not able to get this device to work on any of my supposidly compatable computers.

Q: 10. I'm looking at a Display that has USB C connectivity, This display can handle video and data through it when connected to a 1 port USB type C Macbook. Would I be able to get display and data from the USB C port to a thunderbolt 2 equipped Macbook with this adapter?

A: As the current MacBook does not support Thunderbolt, you would not be able to use a USB C to Thunderbolt adapter such as the StarTech Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt Adapter to add that ability.

[0.15 lb] With many current computers having migrated to USB C ports and having few or no USB A ports available but many accessories retaining the USB A plugs it's well to have one or two of these handy.
