A clever short telephoto, the Sony E-mount ZEISS Touit 50mm f/2.8M Macro Lens Sony Eis a 75mm-equivalent prime suitable for both portraiture as well as close-up shooting. As a macro lens, it features a life-size 1:1 maximum magnification ratio and a minimum focusing distance of 5.9" for working with nearby subjects. Its advanced Planar optical design includes two aspherical elements and two low dispersion elements, which help to control a variety of aberrations, distortion, and color fringing in order to produce sharp, well-corrected imagery. A floating elements system is used, too, to maintain consistent image quality throughout the focusing range. Individual elements also receive a ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating to suppress flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions. Additionally, suiting both photo and video use, this lens incorporates a DC autofocus motor to deliver especially fast, quiet, and precise focusing performance.

Short telephoto prime is designed for APS-C-format Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras and provides a 75mm equivalent focal length.
Ideal for macro shooting, this lens offers a life-size 1:1 maximum magnification along with a minimum focusing distance of 5.9" to suit working with close-up subjects.
Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture suits working in available-light conditions and also contributes a relatively smaller, lighter form factor.
Planar optical design affords high sharpness and consistent performance throughout the focusing range to suit photographing at a wide range of imaging scales.
The optical design utilizes two anomalous partial dispersion elements to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and color fidelity.
Two aspherical elements control distortion and spherical aberrations in order to produce greater sharpness and more accurate rendering.
ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections and provide greater contrast and color fidelity.
Floating elements system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range.
DC autofocus motor delivers quick and quiet focusing performance to suit both stills and video shooting applications.

Q: 1. How well would this lens be expected to perform for shooting the milky way? I am currently shooting with the kit 18-35mm lens and am looking to take get better image quality when shooting at night than i can achieve with the kit lense. Is there a compatible Nex7 lens that would be recommended before this one? I don't mind if it would require an adapter, just looking for a good night photography lens with a reasonable price.
A: In this focal range and price range I would say this is the best you could opt for to give you improved image quality over your 18-35mm kit lens. Sony offers a 16mm f2.8 lens but it would not give you the same field of view as this lens would, and the optical quality of this Zeiss lens is much greater than the Sony 16mm option.
Q: 2. Does the new firmware improve improve video performance ? Specifically with use on the Sony A6300? Thanks
A: The ZEISS Touit lenses were designed for still photo applications and not specifically for video. The firmware update referenced at a href= http://www.zeiss.com/camera-lenses/en_de/service/download_center/touit_e-mount.html target= _blank http://www.zeiss.com/camera-lenses/en_de/service/download_center/touit_e-mount.html/a is to support phase detection auto focus and the fast hybrid auto focus of newer Sony E-mount cameras.
Q: 3. I'm looking for a macro lens for my Nex-6.Is there a difference between a true Macro lens, and this lens, which offers 1:1 Macro capability? Is there anything that the Sony 30mm f/3.5 Macro lens will do that this lens will not?(For example, I read somewhere that a true macro will have a flat focus plane, rather than a curved focus plane. Is the focus plane of this lens flat or curved?)
A: I own both the Sony 30 and the Zeiss 50. The image quality of the 50 is astounding. It is insanely sharp. The 30 is pretty good, but not nearly as sharp. The 50's 2.8 means a faster shutter and less motion blur as neither are stabilized. Also, to get 1:1 with the 30, you have to be an inch (25mm) from the subject. The 50 let's you be about 6 inches away - this makes shooting much easier to frame. The 50 is my best lens - worth the higher cost. By the way, I think both are flat - looks that way in my photos.
Q: 4. why I have sound noise when using manual focus in video mode ? Can someone help me. Thank you
A: This is one of the (several) disappointments about this otherwise excellent lens: manual focus is not truly manual , it is fly-by-wire in the sense that turning the focus ring does not transmit movement directly to the internal parts, instead, this triggers the motor and the motor imparts movement internally. This is why focusing by hand still makes the noise: you're hearing that robust motor mentioned in the other reply because it's being switched on to adjust focus. This lens is not usable for video unless you're not capturing audio at the same time. Don't even try it, you'll just end up pulling your hair out in post... To be fair, Zeiss should put that in bold letters at the top of the product description.
Q: 5. Is this Lens compatible Sony F Nex 100, which is not a DSLR?
A: It is, it's an e mount
Q: 6. Would this lens be okay to use for portraits on a Sony A-6000?
A: I would say it would depend on how close you are to your subject and the type of portraiture you are attempting to capture with the lens. While the Zeiss Touit 32mm f/1.8 Lens is a good lens, due to the lens' focal length, the lens may slightly distort the proportions of the face if used too close to your subject while trying to capture a head-and-shoulders portrait. However, the lens would be fine for candid images or portraits showing some of the environment. Due to the 1.5x crop of the APS-C sensor used in the Sony Alpha A6000 Mirrorless Digital Camera, I would recommend a lens that has a focal length between 50mm - 135mm for the optimum portrait focal length range on the Sony A6000.
Q: 7. Does the Zeis Touit 50mm Macro come with a lens hood?
A: Yes it does
Q: 8. How would this be on a Sony a7s? I have a Sony 50mm macro A mount, but have to use an adapter, and it is noisy focusing. Also what is the close-focus distance?
A: This is an excellent lens for taking extremely close-up (macro) shots. It is an excellent lens for portraits. The image quality is top-notch, as you would expect from Zeiss, even if it's made under license in Japan and not in Germany. However, it is for APS-C so for a full-frame system like the A7 it is not appropriate and would not cover your sensor area. That said, minimum focusing distance is just a few centimeters (probably about 2 to 3 ). BUT anyway... if audible noise is your concern and you're looking for a video solution, FORGET IT! I own this lens and it is totally unusable for video unless you are not taking audio at the same time. It tends to focus-hunt and the mechanism is very loud (as in obnoxious). I do not regret purchasing it, but I would if there was a new version with a silent motor and weather/dust sealing. Having to put cling-wrap on a thousand dollars worth of lens so that I can get close to my subject in the moist forest undergrowth or in a dusty area sometimes feels more than just a little bit ridiculous. If you want a great 50mm for full frame and if you don't care about manual focus-only, look at the Voigtlander + close focus adapter. It's very nice, smaller, better finished , and will cost (with the adapter) about the same, but no auto-focus. But with an A7, that's easy to get around.
Q: 9. Will this lens work on the new FF Sony E-mount cameras?
A: The Zeiss Touit 12mm f/2.8 Lens (Sony E-Mount) can be used on the full frame Sony E mount cameras, though the cameras will crop down to an APS-C size sensor mode. This lens is not designed to cover a full frame sensor.
Q: 10. Hi, Does this lense work on the Sony NEX-5N?
A: Yes, this lens is compatible with the NEX-5N camera.
