Capture broadcast-quality sound indoors or outside for your next indie film, TV shoot, or documentary project with the black RODE NTG3B Moisture-Resistant Shotgun Mic Blackmoisture-resistant shotgun microphone. Professional-level features such as low-noise circuitry, upgraded immunity to radio-frequency interference, and minimal handling noise reduce the need to repair and restore audio in postproduction.

The NTG3B's high sensitivity allows it to produce strong output levels without having to apply extreme gain at your mic preamp. Sonically, the NTG3B delivers consistently clear sound due in part to its gentle rise in high frequencies and its rumble-reducing attenuation of low bass frequencies. Its switch- and dial-free design lets you set up quickly and focus on the sound instead of fiddling with various mic settings. The solid brass housing is both durable and lightweight, and its anti-glare finish prevents reflections in the shot.

When your work takes you outdoors, you're bound to encounter humidity and condensation, which can cause many mics to fail. The NTG3B's RF bias technology makes it almost completely resistant to moisture, allowing you to reliably capture high-quality audio in normal and adverse environmental conditions. It also includes a weatherproof aluminum storage cylinder for maximum protection during travel.

The NTG3B was engineered for broadcast-quality sound, enhanced immunity to RF (radio frequency) interference, and low handling noise. Plus, its balanced output allows longer cable runs than most camera-mount shotgun microphones.

The combination of the NTG3B's 10" long body and supercardioid polar pattern yields focused on-axis directionality with maximum rejection behind the mic. Its low self-noise of 13 dBA and highly sensitive condenser element communicate detailed audio unburdened by the hiss that plagues many low-cost microphones.

Thanks to its 3-pin XLR output and compliance with 44 to 52 VDC phantom power, the NTG3B is compatible with a variety of handheld audio recorders, field recorders, and mixer adapters, as well as built-in preamps on many camcorders and cinema cameras.

The NTG3B includes a mic clip for easy placement on a mic stand or boompole. Alternatively, mount the NTG3B in the Rode SMR-4 shockmount (available separately) to impede the transfer of vibrations between your boompole and the mic.

The NTG3B has a foam windscreen to reduce unwanted wind noise from breezes, fans, heaters, and air conditioners. For maximum reduction of handling noise and wind noise in indoor or outdoor environments, consider the Rode Blimp furry windshield and shockmount suspension system (available separately).

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this come with a shock mount? It's listed as a free item that comes with the set, but it's NOT listed on the in the box tab.

A: Mine did

Q: 2. Can I plug the NTG3 directly into the canon 5d Mark iv?

A: No. The NTG3 requires phantom power which the camera does not provide so you will need to use an adapter that will power the mic. The Beachtek DXA-MICRO-PRO (B&H # BEDXAMICROP) will supply phantom power and also has a high quality preamp built in. Many recorders and mixers will also supply phantom power. Please feel free to contact us if you would like further assistance.

Q: 3. What is the difference between the NTG3 and NTG2?

A: I've used both and in my experience the NTG 3 is much hotter than the NTG 2. For me that is a good thing because it means you can get a stronger signal into the preamp at lower gain levels and thus avoid noise.

Q: 4. Is this a Lobar Pattern microphone?

A: A Lobar pickup pattern is commonly found in shotgun microphones and has the highest possible directionality, and can often be used interchangeably with "hypercardioid" and "supercardioid" pattern descriptions. However, both patterns are technically slightly less directional than the Lobar pattern, but Lobar is also much less commonly used by manufacturers to categorize their microphones' pickup capabilities. The NTG3B Moisture-Resistant Shotgun Microphone's pickup pattern is categorized as supercardioid.

Q: 5. Would this work with a canon c200?

A: This will work with the XLR inputs on the C200.

Q: 6. What thread type is the mic holder that comes in the set? Trying to mount it to a 5/8 thread mic stand

A: yes it is 5/8

Q: 7. Can the NTG3 be used with Xvive U3C wireless plug on system?

A: Yes, you can use the Xvive Audio U3C with the RODE NTG3 Moisture-Resistant Shotgun Microphone (Satin Nickel) because the U3C provides phantom power for condenser mics like the NTG3.

Q: 8. Can the ntg3b plug directly into a Sony a7s2? Or is the ntg4+ the only one with a built in phantom?

A: The NTG-3 requires an external phantom power source and is not directly compatible with the a7s2. The Rode NTG-4+ features a built in rechargeable battery that will allow for direct connection to the camera as well as the Rode NTG-2 which is able to accept a AA battery for power.

Q: 9. Will this work with the mount for theTascam CA-XLR2d-C XLR Microphone Adapter Kit for Canon Cameras? If so, would I need to purchase additional cables?

A: Yes, the Rode NTG3B Moisture-Resistant Shotgun Microphone will fit in the microphone holder on the Tascam CA-XLR2d-C XLR Microphone Adapter Kit for Canon Cameras. The holder is compatible with microphone diameters between 19-23mm, and the NTG3B has a specified diameter of 19mm. A short XLR cable such as the Kopul Coiled 3-Pin XLR-M to Angled 3-Pin XLR-F Cable (BH #KOM4003RC) would be required to connect the microphone to the input on the CA-XLR2d-C: https://bhpho.to/3OYmI96

Q: 10. can this record car sounds when placed near the exhoust for example? or does it kill the mic

A: The RODE NTG3 Shotgun Microphone could be used to pickup sounds from the car, but I would not recommend leaving it too close to the exhaust as dirt and heat from the exhaust could permanently damage the mic.

[Black] When I need perfect audio, this is the mic I turn to. I bought it in the kit, and I'm a filmmaker on a budget. This mic is going to be with me for a long time!

[Black] I can't say enough about the Rode NTG-3 Shotgun mike... If I was to recommend a shotgun mike for industrial use such as the type of work i do, I would not even hesitate to suggest this mike as your primary choice...Period!!

[Solid-State] I use this product for video recording as well as for amplifying and recording a drum-set. It is important to get a clear sound, and with the NTG-3, you are basically assured to have quality/professional sound. I didn't mind the price because I was buying quality.

[Phantom Power] I do youtube reviews and I wanted a mic with really good clarity and my goodness! The Rode NTG3 is absolutely amazing, the matte-black finish to the microphone looks good and the mic overall feels really sturdy. I hooked this thing to my Zoom H6 and I set the gain to about mid level(between 5 and 6) and there is no hissing. Beautiful sound and super clear. I watched a ton of youtube reviews before buying this watch so make sure you do your research well but all I can say is you won't be regretting the quality of this mic. 10/10

[48 V] I bought this mic for two reasons...1) field recording from boom pole, and 2) studio ADR recording. Not only does it do both extremely well, it also can be used as an alternative to that other shotgun mic they use out in L.A. for movie trailer announcers! Cuts through a mix when getting super close proximity, which isn't what it was designed for but, hey, it works.

[1.8 lb] To get the best results, do the research and know what mics to use for each situation. This is a great mic. I use it when grabbing audio for my indoor interview style videos.

[Supercardioid] The rode NT3 shotgun is a worthwhile high class location microphone that really does a great job. It has an ever so slightly wider pick up pattern than a Sennhieser 416 shotgun, but that's a good thing, as you don't have to swing as much between talent. Considering the cost, it's a great buy for broadcast spec audio. Rode also has a 10 year warranty, and an excellent standard of finish. The only small issue is it is it will not run into the Lectrosonics buttplug transmitter, as I am told it draws slightly to much current. Testing it beside a Sennhieser 416 and MKH 60 revealed the same quality punchy definition in the voice, and a rich bottom end.

[Black] great sound, Very accurate voice reproduction. Super low self noise & handling noise. It is very close to the MKH 416 in sound but for 1/2 the price! The only downside is the name is not as recognized by clients.

[48 V] I used two NTG-3 shotgun microphones for the first time for recording the sound tracks for a full orchestra video. My equipment was set up in the first row of the balcony (about 60 feet from the orchestra). The sound quality was exceptional and covered the full audio spectrum well. I wish I knew how to include a short sound clip in this review. It had wonderful attenuation of audiance noise (coughs, etc.).
