Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How does this compare to the 2150XL chemistry?

A: Ilford Multigrade Developer (Liquid) for Black & White Paper - 5 Liters is just paper developer. That is optimized for multigrade paer. The Ilford 2150 Developer/Fixer Black and White Print Chemicals Kit 2x(3 liter) is, Ilford 2150XL Developer and Ilford 2150XL Fixer are liquid concentrate chemicals supplied as a kit specifically for use with the Ilfolab 2150 RC table top processor.

Q: 2. How long will this chemical last before expiring?

A: There is no posted date on the bottle, only a batch number. However, according to Ilford: "Full unopened bottles of MULTIGRADE and PQ UNIVERSAL developer concentrates stored in cool conditions, 5–20ºC, (41–68ºF), will keep for 2 years. Once opened use the concentrate completely within six months and keep all bottles tightly sealed until used. Working strength MULTIGRADE developer, PQ UNIVERSAL and BROMOPHEN left in an open dish should not be kept for more than one working day. If stored in a tightly capped bottle they may last up to 24 hours."

Q: 3. Can you leave this paper after exposing in the fridge for a period of time before developing? Not near a darkroom

A: You can hold off processing the HARMAN technology Direct Positive Fiber Based (FB) Paper (Glossy, 4 x 5", 25 Sheets). But do not do that for long times. It is best to process right away but you can wait a few days or so.

Q: 4. Does it have a shelf life or go off? I've had a bottle for a couple of years and haven't needed to use it till now and wasn't sure if I still could

A: If the bottle was not opened, it should still be good.

Q: 5. how long for per roll?

A: I've not bought any rolls; only sheets. This item appears to be 66' though.

Q: 6. Is this available in luster?

A: Unfortunately, this paper is currently available only in glossy and emulsion-in.

Q: 7. Can I develop films with this?

A: Technically, yes. But for best results, you are significantly better off using actual film developer. Times and results will vary greatly because the concentration/strength/developing time and grain structure will be quite different. You will also have to experiment with dilution for best results.

Q: 8. I have old and recent b&w slides; anyone have experience printing with an enlarger on this paper? Pre-flash? General exposure length? Preferred developer? Thanks in advance!

A: As always, our wonderful customers are a great resource. Please look to the product reviews for the answers to your questions. Used with care, this paper produces great results.

Q: 9. How long will the developer last once opened?

A: Full unopened bottles of Ilford MULTIGRADE developer concentrates stored in cool conditions, 5–20ºC, (41–68ºF), will keep for 2 years. Once opened, use the concentrate completely within six months and keep all bottles tightly sealed until used. Working strength MULTIGRADE developer left in an open dish should not be kept for more than one working day. [Neutral] This paper is consistent and dry down differential is minimal. Tones well with selenium. Tones better in warm water than colder water.

[1x Paper Roll] Warmtone FB has been my primary paper for years. I use the glossy surface for proofs and semi-matte, which I varnish, for prints. The varnish is not glossy but restores the range and separation, leaving a soft luster surface.
The full range of contrast allows tuning prints from a variety of negatives to the ideal presentation to evoke the mood I wish to convey. I use selenium toner, usually at 1:19, to tone from 2-7 minutes.
The consistency and reliability of the paper, batch to batch, makes this paper stand out from others available in yet another way.

[57 x 8 x 7.5"] Even though Multi FB warmtone has changed over the years, I still think it is Ilford's best Fiber multigrade paper, and I will keep buying it until it changes.
The paper is not as warm and is faster than it used to be- two things that worry me about it.
I have used this paper for many big shows, as it is very consistent from batch to batch and although I wish it was the same as it was 20-30 years ago, I will keep using it if it stays the same as it is currently.

I do think Gallery is better paper, but since it only comes in grade 3 now, it is not nearly as versatile, even though I have reached the conclusion that it is closer to the way it was 20-30 years ago than the Multigrade fiber warmtone, and I have grown to like the more neutral tones, especially now that the warmtone multigrade fiber is less warm than it used to be.
As long as ilford keeps making both (Gallery and warmtone fiber) the same way it is today, I will keep buying it.

[1x Paper Roll] I used FB paper for the first time. I felt that the photo would be completely different from the RC print. I think it's a very attractive and easy-to-use photographic paper. And a cool package design.
