This is because the distance between the sensor and the front of the camera where the lens would normally mount is too far and the edges will cast a shadow. That space is taken up by the mirror movement and is Calle the mirror box That's the problem I had with this adapter. It's well built but I could only use it near the center of the 4x5 area with my D800E. It should work fine with a mirrorless DSLR like th Sony alpha7 assuming you have the correct adaptor.
