The Cavision 3x3" 4-Point Star Filter for Cinematic Shotsis a cross screen filter providing 4 reflected light points stemming from specular highlights within the image frame. When the filter is rotated in front of the lens, the points shift in direction but always reflect symmetrically. This effect is caused by thinly etched lines on the surface of the filter. Star effect filters are most effective when not used in combination with other filters.

This filter is constructed from optical glass to maintain high image quality and measures 3 x 3" / 76.2 x 76.2mm.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this the blimp or the dead cat?

A: Blimp style; Cavision SWS1040 Blimp-Style Windshield (Dark Gray) BH #CASWJ1040D • MFR #SWS1040D

Q: 2. How is barrel distortion controlled in this adapter? Is it significant or minimal?

A: This is a high quality item that should have minimal barrel distortion present when used with the proper camera and lens.

Q: 3. Does the app allow for locating other objects such as the space station or satellites?

A: There is a firmware update for the SynScan Pro app for the Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer GTi Head Kit (Head Only) that is designed specifically for tracking man-made objects in the sky--Satellite Tracker Application Version 0.25.

Q: 4. Will this hood work on a Lee 105mm polarizing filter mounted on the 100mm lee filter holder and will it swivel for horizontal and vertical shots using that knob I see?

A: The Cavision LH105P Wide Angle Hood B&H # CALH105P has 105mm threads so it should fit on a 105mm filter ring and swivel. However, we do not see the efficacy of swiveling for it is square and would have no effect on its ability to shade nor does it hold filters.

Q: 5. Does Cavision manufacture a deadcat to go with this? If not, what third party manufactured dead cat would fit this windshield?

A: Cavision does offer a fur windjammer designed for use with the SWS1040 blimp. The MFR model number is SWJ1040. B&H does not have this item available in stock and it is not currently listed on the website, but we may be able to order it for you. Please contact us by phone or through live chat on the website for further assistance. Here is a link to the manufacturer's item page: http://www.cavision.com/audio/windjammers/SWJ1040.htm

Q: 6. Will this fit a Panasonic hpx170?

A: The HPX170 has a 72mm filter thread. This adapter should work well with that camcorder as it has a compatible thread.

Q: 7. Can the clamp be removed in order to attach it to my rig via cold shoe or screw?

A: Yes, the clamp is attached with a x-head screw. I'm not sure what type of rig you are wanting to attach it to, but the clamp works well. I think the gooseneck and flag would be a bit too heavy to work well if mounted using a flash-type cold shoe. It's a great product. I use it frequently when taking long exposures or HDR sequences with my Canon 17mm T-SE lens which is very prone to flare.

Q: 8. My camera has a conversion lens ,it's front thread is 102 mm but it is 105 mm in diameter will this hood fit??

A: Yes, the Cavision LH105P Wide Angle Hood is a clamp on hood that fits 105mm front diameter lenses. Hopefully the design of the lens has enough flatness so it can fit.

Q: 9. Do you get the aspect ration of a 35mm camera? if yes, what focal lengh does it cover?

A: This does support 35mm Film (SW22) and covers from 18-200mm for that setting.

Q: 10. Can we use this lense on a 67mm lense with conversion adaptor?

A: Please email us with the information of what camera you have and we can find out for you. provideo@bhphoto.com

[0.14 lb] the quality is just so, u know - plastic, i guess if i unintentionally drop the whole camera kit which the front will reach the ground first, it will be done lol, but it's still worthy for this price....

i didnt buy the 77-85mm adapter ring, but my sony 24-105g with 77mm front size seems to have a little bit vignette with this mattebox, i guess that sony 24-70za with 67mm front size fits this better

[4-Point Star] I use this on my NX5u and it works perfectly with the widescreen aspect ratio. It is made of a soft, but rigid rubber. It's a GREAT alternative to the more expensive matte boxes.

[4-Point Star] I needed a Matt Box that I could use for both Video and Photography, to manage polarizers, grad filters etc. without having some massive apparatus hanging from the end of my camera. Well built and designed system that accommodates multiple mounting options i.e. direct lens attachment or rail system . For smaller DSLR camera systems, this is perfect. I also use this matt Box on my medium format camera system and it works great. If you need something a bit larger, Cavision also makes a 4x4 version. B&H has a wide variety of both 3x3 and 4x4 filters from Cavision, Lee etc. to fit either model.

[0.14 lb] I bought this matte box to be used with a minimalist rig I set up: a small mirrorless camera, zoom 16-35 on a Speedboster, microphone and a cage. Didn't want a box with flags, and that was another reason to choose this model. Considering the relatively low price, I didn't set my expectations too high. Well... What a surprise: I got a well thought, designed and built matte box. The two trays, one fixed and one rotating (the one closer to the front lens) allow the use of a polarizer and ND at the same time, or color correction filter and polarizer, or whatever the need is for a specific situation. The design of the box doubles a a lens shade, which so far as proved very efficient and accomodating wide-angle lenses. My 16-35 on this camera is equivalent to a 22-50, and it is well protected from stray lights or flare from side lighting. I also got step-up rings made by the same brand to accomodate 3 other lenses. They are relatively cheap, and with an external diameter of 83mm to clamp the matte box tightly. If flags are needed, there are threaded holes to mount them. I use glass filters of the same brand, which have the right thickness for the tray. Synthetic/polymer filter may be too thin to fit without 'curving'.

[0.14 lb] I bought the 4 x 4 6-Point Star Filter by Cavision for some night video shots where I wanted to add a little extra to the scene. Star filters have been around for many years, but tend to get a little expensive in the 4X4 size. The Cavision however is very reasonably priced and excellent quality.

[4-Point Star] This little beauty works so well on my little PXW-X70. I use it mainly with a B&W 3x3 polariser. The filter holder itself works just as well in the field as anything by Vocas or Chriszeil. The first stage rotates smoothly. Unfortunately there is no tightening screw to keep the first stage in place. To tighten it you need an Allen wrench to hand. And as anyone who uses a clamp-on matte box knows, you really need to tighten the filter holder notch once you've put the filter in or it will fall out the bottom, there being no rails to prevent it.

Apart from that, no complaints. The rubber lens hood is the same size and shape as a standard Fujinon broadcast lens. You can use the good old Cavision French flag with this matte box.
