Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What filter size does this lens use?

A: This lens uses 67mm threaded filters.

Q: 2. How does the Milvus version of this 21mm lens compare to the older Distagon version?

A: The Milvus 2.8/21 shares the same optical design as the 'Classic' Distagon T* 2.8/21 ZF.2, but is superior in a number of other ways. The anti-reflective coating is improved, which provides better control of flare and subsequently improves contrast and color saturation. The barrel is now weather sealed against moisture and dust, while the aperture on the ZF.2 series can be de-clicked for continuous control of the aperture.

Q: 3. Do I have the adjust the aperture using the aperture ring or can I adjust it using the controls on my camera?

A: Both options are available. The lens is fully compatible using your cameras auto functions. But can be used with manual aperture control for video applications by declicking the aperture ring with the provided key.

Q: 4. Would it be correct to assume that the clicks aperture control on these lenses applies only to the Nikon mount, not the Canon?

A: The canon version does not have an f/stop ring and the Nikon version does. The Nikon version also comes with a tool so you can convert the f/stop ring to de-clicked.

Q: 5. Will the Otus line come out with the Z mount?

A: The Otus lenses are designed for F and EF mount (D)SLR cameras, but can be used on mirrorless cameras via a compatible lens mount adapter. There are currently no plans to expand the range of mount offerings at this time.

Q: 6. Do the camera lens metering and focus indicators work normally when using the FTZ adapter on zf.2 lenses?

A: Yes, the lens and camera will communicate using the FTZ adapter

Q: 7. Between this and the Milvus 18mm f/2.8, which is sharper?

A: The ZEISS Milvus 21mm f/2.8 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F and the Milvus 18mm f/2.8 are equally as sharp. The difference is in the focal length.

Q: 8. Is this lens (MFR #2096-550) compatible with Nikon D7000? The compatibility list shows D7100 and D7200 so I assume it is, but wanted to be sure.

A: Yes. Due to its manual-only design, this will work with most Nikon DSLRs. :)

Q: 9. is there a tripod collar available to fit this lens?

A: A tripod collar is only necessary with longer/telephoto lenses.

Q: 10. What Zeiss Lens gear do you use with this lens? Small, mini or medium?

A: This will require the "large" Zeiss lens gear.

[15 to 30mm] Bit the bullet and decided to give manual focus lens a try. This lens is awesome, very sharp, great build and smooth, accurate focus.

Worth every cent...

[Full Frame] One of the more approachable of Zeiss lenses is also one of the most useful. I use it for kids, landscapes, interiors and street photography. The manual focus is tight and deliberate allowing for small adjustments to bring everything into focus. Then I can let go and know that the focus ring is staying in place. And it is sharp. Very sharp. Weighty for its size (read: quality), all metal including the lens cap. A true piece of quality to add to your arsenal of lenses.

[15 to 30mm] I was going to buy the Canon 35mm lens, but am happy I opted for this instead. Quality is excellent. Yes, heavier than most, but it hasn't been a huge issue and I've gone on several hikes with it, carrying it, etc. No problems with camera shake or focus issues (which I have had with Canon lenses). I tested my ability to hand hold down to 1/15 and was able to do it (never with the Canon lens). The manual focus is not a problem ... as another reviewer suggested, I use the focus assist (green light in the viewfinder). The resulting photos are stunning and I've eliminated a lot of issues I was having with Canon lenses, which frees me up to focus on more important things, like getting the shot. I'm probably going to trade up my Canon 50mm lens for the Zeiss eventually. Other things: background blur is nice, chromatic aberration is definitely a thing under certain conditions, if you want a light-weight lens, then reconsider. But, this lens has brought my confidence in my photographic ability back (because I was having so many performance issues with the Canon lenses I was doubting myself). Glad I bought this and would recommend it.

[2x] Perfect zoom range starting at 70mm. Will be perfect for 4k applications as well. Excellent image quality and color balance. But you expect that from a Zeiss lens

[15 to 30mm] Most people are concerned with sharpness. I have never had a 35mm prime that's sharper wide open at f/2. When mounted on a 60mp sensor camera this Milvus delivers the same amazing resolution at f/1.4 as my $6K Leica Summilux FLE. The trade-off in this case is probably weight, it is quite heavy/bulky for a f/2 35mm prime. Perhaps this lens phenomenal performance helps explain the absence of Zeiss Otus 35mm - there's simply no need, no room for improvement over this Milvus. Frankly, for roughly a thousand dollars this lens is a bargain, if you don't mind the weight.

[Full Frame] I absolutely love the CP.3 lenses. The 85mm is an absolute Beauty. Having a compact, lightweight, well designed, and optically beautiful lens is a huge selling factor for me. I don't buy lenses that aren't build well and these are tanks. Zeiss did an incredible jobs redesigning these. I highly recommend. I use them on the Red Komodo and will soon try them out on the Red Raptor, although I know they will work great with it. Definitely a must buy or rent depending on your job or project. Worth every penny

[Full Frame] The feel in hand, richness of colour, and subject isolation make this lens one or my favourites. I can't believe the price of this product versus the other options I've tried (including the Nikon 28mm f1.4). Yes, the manual focus is a hassle, but the results can be oh, so enjoyable!

[Nikon F] I have used this lens on the Nikon D850, D810 and Z7ii. It has the legendary Zeiss build quality and can produce very sharp images with beautiful color and contrast. The brokeh is nice in a way that only Zeiss can render, and the manual focus ring is precise in a way my Nikon lenses are
not. This lens is also small and light for a Zeiss prime. Good for semi-wide landscape, portrait, and studio work. While this lens is not as sharp as the new Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 prime, it is still able to produce good micro detail with the classic Zeiss 3D look. The sweet spot is f/10, for highly detailed Landscapes and Close In. My Zeiss 25mm f/2 is an excellent lens and this 35mm is just as good, I think. I would highly recommend this if you do not want to shell out twice as much cash for the f/1.4, but need the 35mm FOV and the Zeiss look in an F-Mount.
