The Laird Dual Mono XLR to 1/4" TRS Audio Snake for Blackmagic Camerasfrom Laird Dual Mono XLR to 1/4" TRS Audio Snake for Blackmagic Camerasis a two foot long cable that connects to the 1/4" TRS audio inputs on an available Blackmagic Cinema or 4K production camera, providing 3-pin XLR inputs for use with industry standard XLR connectors. A headphone output return cable with male 3.5mm stereo mini plugs on each end completes the snake.

On the camera side the three connectors feature a right angle design that keeps the cables tight to the camera body, minimizing strain. The cables are protected from RF interference by a foil shield, and each cable is wrapped with its own protective mesh to protect it from abrasions. The three cables run through a flexible sleeve that keeps the cables together. The XLR and 1/4" TRS connectors feature color coded jackets, for easy channel identification.

Q: 1. Will this module still provide the power to enable lav mics without power to work. In other words if I connect two lavs with xlr jacks will they each provide the voltage that the stereo 3.5mm jack did on the standard xy mic module, Not looking for phantom power, I know they won't do that. Also will this module still retain creating a backup -12db stereo tracks from the LR channels.?

A: This unit does not provide phantom power but you already know that. If you are talking about a wireless lav mic then yes, it will work because the power comes from the receiver, usually powered with batteries, with a XLR output that you plug into the module. Again, the module supplies NO power to the mic receiver and of course a wireless lav mic must also have a powered transmitter in order to provide a signal for the powered receiver. As far as I know the 3.5mm jack is NOT powered. It is simply an input for a stereo mic. Depending on how you configure the recorder (which mode you select) determines how you record each channel (independently vs. stereo) and as such, allows you to record an independent mono track with a 12db variance.

Q: 2. Why does this module have a power input? Can it be used by itself as a separate recorder?

A: The DC5V USB-C power input on the Zoom EXH-6e Dual XLR-1/4" TRS Input Capsule for H6essential Portable Recorder would be used for powering condenser microphones with an XLR connector, because these types of mics require 48V phantom power.

Q: 3. Where does it mount to the Pocket Camera?

A: It's designed to mount on rails, not the camera itself, but the rail mount can be unscrewed leaving a 1/4-20 hole if you want to mount it another way.

Q: 4. Is this product made of metal?

A: The rail mounting clamp and bolt are metal. The battery and microphone input block is plastic (except for electrical connections and a few small pieces on the xlr inputs. The plastic has so far held up fine -- without receiving 'kid glove' treatment. Biggest issue is that there is nothing that locks batteries in place, and the shape makes rigging a solution a bit of a chore. As a cord-cutter, we've ran a BMPCC for a good eight hour day with almost no off-time, and plenty of checking takes - and could have gone hours more. Keep an eye on camera temp during extended 'camera on' shoots - especially if shooting time lapse in RAW format - parts of the camera can get too hot to touch and suffer damage. This not an 'approved' Blackmagic device, so may lack some form of power management on a camera that has no self-cooling system. Note the xlr inputs are just converters (not a preamp and offer no phantom power). Otherwise, a good, budget solution with a touch of DIY to keep batteries on the unit. For pro use, there are better and, naturally, more expensive choices. That said, ours is still in the field...

Q: 5. So I can have two back up tracks. One for each input?

A: When using the backup recording function included on devices such as the H6, a stereo backup file will be created. The left side of the file will be from input 1 of the EXH-6, the right side of the file will be created by input 2. This stereo file can be split into two separate mono files in post.

Q: 6. Since this module does not provide phantom power, to the added XLR's, can anyone recommend gear to cover that gap?

A: If you want to connect condenser mics to this input then you would require a phantom power supply for those mics like the Rolls PB223 for example. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/155423-REG/Rolls_PB223_PB223_Dual_48V_Phantom.html

Q: 7. When connected to the H5, will the L/R backup track feature still be available?

A: The backup recording feature is available when recording the L/R inputs with any of the available modules.

Q: 8. can you monitor audio with audio out jack??

A: Yes you can use the audio out jack to monitor but you can't plug a headphone directly in the audio out jack and expect it to work as a headphone driver. The audio out jack is at microphone level and is matched to the microphone input on a DSLR camera. You would need an extra pre-amp to monitor the audio at line or headphone level from the audio out jack. However, the Saramonic BMCC-A01 has a dedicated headphone output with a volume control that works easily for audio monitoring of incoming signals. If you want to monitor incoming signals and audio playback from the camera when needed, then use the headphone jack on the camera as the place to plug in your headphones.

Q: 9. does it include the batteries?

A: No this unit does not include batteries. All batteries are sold separately.

Q: 10. Do the XLR connectors just transfer the signal, or is there a pre-amp before getting sent off to the camera?

A: That is a good question, one that I am not completely sure of. I have used both a shotgun mic (which required phantom power) and lavaliere mics with this rig. The phantom power is drawn off the L batteries on the harness. Both mics worked incredibly well in terms of quality of audio recording once the BMPCC was able to monitor audio levels. Before they made that upgrade it was a bit of a guessing game. If I had to guess, I would say that it is just transferring the signal, although with the price I paid for this thing it should come with an internal amp and a back massage. Might need to contact the manufacturer on this one.

[0.45 lb] This does more than merely adapting from 3.5mm to XLR. For most PA uses, where one needs to run output from an iPad or other portable device into a mixer, it should be mono and balanced. A splitter adapter cable that goes from XLR to stereo 3.5mm male is ONLY suitable for converting from XLR to dual channel mono out via 3.5mm. The process doesn't work in reverse unless you use a transformer like this that specifically sums the two stereo channels to create a proper mono mix (not just one stereo channel, which may be missing important parts of the mix that are in the other channel). This works perfectly, and I use it several times per year.

[8.3 x 5 x 0.4"] We often have to add computer sound to portable systems or the main theater stage on campus. The Whirlwind Isopod is the easiest, inexpensive way to adapt from XLR to miniplug in one step.

[8.3 x 5 x 0.4"] I was looking for an interface for my MP3 player to my digital remote stage box, PA speaker, and PA announcer booth at the stadium for background music during intermission. The best thing about this DI is it's portability, and I only use one input to my sound board or other components. The Isopod does not attenuate the output signal like a regular passive DI box. The signal is clear and distinct. No noticeable RF noise. Great economical item to have in your audio inventory.
