Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this monitor cross convert HDMI input to SDI output and vice versa?

A: Yes, the Blackmagic Design Video Assist 3G-SDI/HDMI 7" Recorder/Monitor will output from the SDI and HDMI ports even when the input is from the other cable type.

Q: 2. Can this recorder display time/date and record it on the screen?

A: Details for the Video Assist are being worked out at this time and will not be known in full until release. Watch B&H for further information.

Q: 3. I have a Sony NEX-EA50 with the external recorder, truly improve the image of the NEX-EA50 camera?

A: With an external recorder like the BM Video Assist, you can get uncompressed video from the EA50 and save to a high quality codec, assuring you of the highest possible image quality.

Q: 4. have you got multiviewer with analog audio input , and analog video input with other features of MI 16?

A: This is the closest we match we can offer : Gra-Vue VIO MVS-16HD-D 1U Multiviewer B&H # GRVIOMVS16HD

Q: 5. What file format does this make? MP4?

A: This records ProRes or DNxHD files.

Q: 6. Does this offer camera control for the BMPCC6K (start/stop/change settings) ?

A: The Blackmagic Video Assist monitor will not have camera controls. However, a monitor that will allow you to have camera control for the BMPCC6K is the Portkeys BM5 5.2" monitor, which can be found here: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1500699-REG/portkeys_pkbm5_b_5_2_2000_nit_touch.html/overview You will need to use the additional Portkeys BT1 Bluetooth Module for compatibility with the BMPCC6K, and you can see that here: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1526315-REG/portkeys_bt1_bluetooth_module_for.html

Q: 7. Best battery to last long time connected to 12volt input ?

A: I don't exactly know the power consumption of the unit, but I suspect it is in the neighborhood of 1 Amp at 12 VDC. The use of 2 LP-E6 batteries on the back gives me all the time that I would want to shoot in one day...they recharge easily overnight. A spare pair lives in my bag, already charged. The 12 Volt connector on the unit will charge attached batteries. If you decide to use an external battery, you would have to mount it somewhere and have the correct cable to make it work (check polarity carefully!). I also have built a rig that powers a BMPCC camera, Small HD DP4 and B4 zoom lens from a single Gold Mount battery plate. On that rig, a 65WH battery will run all of the equipment for more than a day. Anton-Bauer and Ikan both make good batteries and chargers. Basically, Amps X Volts = Watts so, you can do comparative math and pick out a good battery system. Good luck.

Q: 8. Will this give my a7iii unlimited recording?

A: The Video Assist 3G 5" only has 1 SD card slot so you can only record for as long as your SD card can fit. The 7" models are the ones with 2 SD card slots you can use for continuous recording.

Q: 9. So it will still record 60fps at 1080p on my Canon 6D (even though my Canon 6D only records 60fps at 720)?

A: Sorry, but recorders can only record the FPS and video resolution given them by the camera. In other words, the recorder cannot up res 60FPS 720 to 60FPS 1080. It should not be much of an issue. 720 vs 1080 is detectable usually only to the trained eye.

Q: 10. I'm interested in using this recorder with my Sony A7S2 - does anyone know if it will take the camera's 420 signal (over HDMI) and upgrade it to 422? Or is that not possible given that the camera itself can't record at 420?Additionally, I understand there's a bug in the A7S2 and this recorder where if you set the camera to record at 4K but output at 1080p, it will set it to output at 60FPS instead of 24FPS (if set to 24FPS) - in other words, it forces the high FPS on the output signal. Does anyone know if this issue has been resolved? Thanks!

A: I cannot speak for the Sony camera, however it's specification indicates 422 available on the HDMI output, so that should work with the Video Assist. I am unable to answer the second half of the question.

[75 Ω] I was skeptical that this was actually going to work, but it said it passed 3-G SDI signal in an 8x8 format matrix. AND IT WORKS GREAT! Easy to install, operate and best of all- delivers! And at a fraction of the cost of several other SDI matrix brands. I have my iMac, Security Camera Feeds, and Black Magic SSD Recorder hooked up to this (HDMI to SDI converter) all going to 7 Televisions and 1 Projector (SDI to HDMI converted) all giving off a great HD picture. I recommend it.

[75 Ω] Excellent features for the price. I never know how much difference a field monitor would make in our production quality. This unit has false color which aids focussing; wave form and histogram views to aid the lighting set-up up front so less effort is needed in post. Unit comes with a sun shield for outdoor use and has a variety of mounting options. It can be mounted on top of a DSLR with the hot shoe mount or on a stand or tripod. Multiple inputs formats can be used although I only use the HDMI input. I use a separate HDMI selector switch to enable multiple cameras to use the same monitor which facilitates camera matching.

[7 lb (3.2 kg)] This monitor is feature packed for the price. We are using it for an on set production monitor which works very well. It has everything you would want including audio monitoring at the monitor. Focus peaking is very nice and the wave form is handy too. We use the NP-F970 batteries and we yet have to change batteries during a shoot. I was also very pleasantly surprised when the monitor arrived in a very nice metal case. The only negative is the menu navigation is a bit clunky but is alright once you get used to it. Bottom line... You'll have to pay more than twice the money for a monitor with the same features and quality. Highly recommended for low budget and student film programs.

[7 lb (3.2 kg)] This Elvid Video Converter is one of those tools that makes your production life so much easier. If you work with SDI equipment but need to integrate HDMI signals, this little guy is a lifesaver. I love how simple it is, just plug in your HDMI source, and boom, it converts the signal to two SDI outputs. Whether you're sending video to a monitor, switcher, or both, it gets the job done without any fuss.

For live events, studio work, or any situation where you need to convert from HDMI to SDI, it’s been super reliable. And the best part is, it supports up to 1080p60, so you're getting really crisp, broadcast-quality video. I’ve used it with my camera and even hooked it up to my computer when I needed to send video to an SDI workflow. It handles both like a pro.

One thing I really appreciate is how compact and sturdy it is. The metal body gives it that extra durability, so I don’t have to worry about it getting damaged when I’m transporting gear. And there is flexibility for power options. It comes with an AC adapter if you have access to a wall outlet. but can be also be powered from a computer or device with a 5V USB output. It’s great to have that choice depending on your setup.

Honestly, for anyone looking to bridge the gap between HDMI and SDI, this converter is a solid, hassle-free solution. It’s small, reliable, and just works. It's exactly what you need when you’re on the go or in the studio. [I have received this product in exchange for my honest review]

[75 Ω] We have an outdoor live location that is transmitted back to our newsroom via fiber circuit. This switcher allows me to keep an HD signal generator (Maxtron) running so the control room can check on the circuit before deploying a crew. When the camera is plugged in it switches to that source automatically and resumes the test signal as soon as the camera is powered off. The unit has been in a weatherproof outdoor enclosure running continuously for two years with no issues so far.

[7 lb (3.2 kg)] I am an independent producer, shooter, editor, scriptwriter, etc. I shoot a great many interviews and have, as of late, been reducing the size and weight of the gear I have to lug around. For the last year, I have been lugging around a TV set I bought@. It was cheap and I really only needed it for positioning of the interviewee. I had to bring power blocks and stingers to run the TV set. Now, with this hot little monitor, I not only get great positioning, outstanding quality of image, and other features (some of which I don't use), it also runs forever on batteries. Before I purchased it, I read some of the reviews. I must say that I could find none of the problems other people say they had. I think most of those other reviewers preferred to open the package, turn everything on, and, then, when it wasn't exactly what they expected, tried to read the instructions. I read them first and the unit is great. I have compared it with other units that cost four times as much and I can't tell the difference.

[75 Ω] The Elvid 3G-SDI to HDMI Micro Video Converter is one of those pieces of gear you don’t realize you need until you do. It’s such a convenient tool for anyone working with SDI equipment but needing to connect to HDMI gear like monitors or computers. I’ve used it to convert SDI signals from a camera to my HDMI monitor, and it’s super easy...just plug in, and you're good to go. It has worked flawlessly for me.

What I appreciate most is how versatile it is. It supports up to 1080p60, so I’m getting crisp, broadcast-quality video every time. Plus, the SDI loop output is a fantastic bonus, letting me retain the option to still send out the signal SDI and not only HDMI. Whether you’re working with a 2nd monitor that is SDI or another SDI device, it keeps everything running smoothly.

The power options are also a nice plus. If I’m somewhere with an AC outlet, it comes with an adapter. Or I can run it off my computer’s USB port, or any other device with a 5V USB output It’s nice to have that flexibility, especially on location. And speaking of locations, the compact and durable metal design makes it super portable. I can toss it in my gear bag without worrying about it getting banged up. And I love that it has a little blue light to let you know it is receiving power and is on. That is good information to have, especially when on location.

For anyone dealing with both SDI and HDMI setups and gear, this little converter is a must-have. It’s reliable, compact, and makes switching between SDI and HDMI workflows a breeze. It’s been a handy addition to my kit for my productions. [I have received this product in exchange for my honest review]

[7 lb (3.2 kg)] This is awesome. Passes all signals from SDI inputs to SDI outputs. Easy to navigate. I've bought three of these already and we are now adding them to estimates for clients. Cost thousands less competitors. If you need 12x12 or 20x20 go with Black Magic Design, if you only need 8x8, use this one instead!
