The Gitzo GT2542 Mountaineer Series 2 Carbon Fiber Tripodfrom Gitzo GT2542 Mountaineer Series 2 Carbon Fiber Tripodfeatures Carbon eXact tubing, which includes High Modulus carbon fiber in the lower leg sections, adding to their diameters and making the tripod more rigid and stronger than its predecessor. The GT2542 has a load capacity of 48.5 lb, extends to a maximum height of 65.7", and folds down to 22" for transport.

The center column on the tripod can be removed for Ground Level Set, which enables the tripod to reach its lowest height of 5.9". Its four-section legs are secured with twist locks that incorporate G-lock Ultra, which has an internal O-ring to prevent dust and particles from entering the leg system. The top spider has been redesigned to add rigidity, and large leg angle selectors give you more area to grip when readjusting leg angles. A ballast hook on the center column allows you to add weight to increase the tripod's stability.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Has anyone compared the Mountaineer 3 series to the Systematic 3 series? Is the Mountaineer more stable, less? Assuming column at bottom...

A: We suggest that rather than which tripod is better than another, consider what is the principal use you need the tripod for. Gitzo has three groups of tripods. Systematic is the flag bearer, the best and most stable they make. Traveler is made for just that, traveling. It for the hiker, the airplane rider who needs excellence in a small, light package. Mountaineer is for those who need a compromise between the two. Very stable yet as light as possible. It is their most popular group. All are stable with the bigger, heavier ones more so. All are light and compact considering what they do with the smallest, lightest one more so. And every one famous Gitzo quality.Which group fits your needs?

Q: 2. How do you raise the center column?

A: Right above where legs attach there is a lock collar that even has wings for griping. Turn that counter clockwise. Raise center column and retighten.

Q: 3. need to support 500mm canon lens ?

A: Hi B&H friend, before I ordered this item I shopping around for long time,I am student at Tri-community center school,I asked instructor which bland of tripod is good,he said 1st,is stable, even you kick it it won't fall,2nd,light but strong enough to support lens. This tripod Gitzo GT 2542 Mountainner series 2 Carbon Fiber Tripos meet all I need.easy to operate, light and strong, only 3.7 pounds, can support 39 pounds.my lens is 70-200 mm,around 4 pounds, your 500mm lens which I don't know how many pounds?but I believe it can support very well.I bought 2weeks ago,I paid $799,now is less expensive,I like to give 5 stars.

Q: 4. How tall is the GT3532 with the center column not extended? How easily is the column removed to use the tripod without it?What is the maximum height with the column removed?Does this tripod have non-rotating legs?

A: The tripod extended without the column extended is 52.4 inches. And it is about the same with the column taken off.Taking the column out on this model is very easy. This is a new design; a single simple unlocking ring under the column's upper disc frees the column while keeping the upper disc solidly in place on the tripod.

Q: 5. Metal spikes, are they under the removable rubber feet? OR are they screwed in after removing rubber feet?

A: The spiked feet are an accessory and are screwed in and come with rubber tips. Click the link below to view; https://bhpho.to/32SEdlY

Q: 6. I cannot decide between the Gitzo GT1542 or the GT2542 Mountaineers, I'll be using a RRS BH-40 PCLR ballhead and a RRS L-Plate in combination, any suggestions?

A: I love the 2 series Gitzo Mountaineer. The 1 series is lighter, but I found the 2 series more stable toshoot with. Very sturdy and beautifully made.

Q: 7. Hi, what is the diameter of GT3542's Power disc ? I know there is a lip on the power disc of the new mountaineer range, I would like to know the diameter within the lip since I want my ball head base fit firmly within the lip of the power disc.

A: the diameter of the disk is 2 3/4 . The lip is flat and is 3/16 wide. Then there is a slanted section for another 3/16 until it reaches the flat bottom.. This gives a 2 diameter for the flat bottom. I use a 55mm really right stuff head which sit on the lip and have not encounter any problem. The head is very well secure even when using a 70-200mm f2.8.Hope this helps

Q: 8. What is the diameter of GT3542's power disc ? I know there is a lip (raise at the edge) on the new mountainner's power disc, I would like to know the inner diameter since I would like my ball head to fit firmly with the power disc.

A: The edge of the disc is very slightly thicker than the main surface as you point out. However it isn't really an abrupt lip, but it slopes up the edge. The flat part of the disc is approximately 1 15/16 . My guess is Gitzo designed it that way to more securely lock down a ball head or gimbel head on the tripod using bit of a taper fit. I give them the benefit of knowing what they are doing, but you should make your own judgement call. My ball head and gimbel head seem to be very secure.

Q: 9. What is the diameter of the center column?

A: The diameter is 1 inch.

Q: 10. What is the warranty?

A: The Gitzo GT2542 Mountaineer Series 2 Carbon Fiber Tripod currently comes with a Limited 6-Month Manufacturer Warranty. This can be extended by 9.5 years with registration.

[Carbon Fiber] I have used Manfrotto and Gitzo tripods for years. While the Manfrotto are very good, the Gitzo are stiffer, the twist collars work much nicer, the O-rings keep most water out. This model adds the removable center column. I have not worked with a tripod with an easier to remove and replace center column, what a great implementation!

[4] Outstanding quality and craftsmanship. You definitely get what you pay for with this tripod. It’s the perfect size and weight even for traveling. The only gripe I have is it should come with a better carrying bag for this price.

[Carbon Fiber] I upgraded to the Gitzo from a well used and abused Manfrotto, well worth the extra cost. Fine precision workmanship the Gitzo is smooth and quick to set up

[4] I bought this as a more portable option to my 4 series. This is plenty stable, and has no trouble with my gimbal/600 F4 (Sony, not the heavy older ones) when I need it to. Obviously I'd go for a more stable rig given the option, but this does just fine and is much nicer to carry around. For landscape it is perfect. If its breezy out keep the center column down and add some ballast to the hook. It would be nice if it came with the pull of spiked feet. RRS BH-40 fits it nicely, BH-55 overhangs the pedestal a bit. I love the leg angle locks, and the leg twist locks are fantastic, nice short throw and sure grip.

[4] Because this tripod was on backorder for several weeks and the restrictions of COVID, I haven't had the chance to really use it as much as I'd like. I've had it for less than two weeks. This tripod is a major upgrade from the Induro I used for many years. The ease and speed of adjusting the legs and its overall sturdiness amazing. It held my 200-500mm lens rock solid. I use an Acratech GP Ballhead, which fits perfectly on the tripod. This tripod is definitely worth its hefty price. I wish it came with factory installed leg warmers as I live in a cold climate. I definitely recommend this tripod. I look forward to making many intimate landscapes and grand landscapes with this quality tripod.

[25 x 4.5 x 4.2"] I have been using a Gitzo GT3542 with a Arca Swiss ballhead for a while. I used it to hold my Phase One camera with 80mp Leaf back, 80mm lens. Great tripod but very large for travel. So I just bought this GT2542 XLS tripod and it perfectly fits diagonally into my carry on suitcase. I still use the same ballhead. I did my first tests in heavy winds in Trieste and it worked perfectly. Very light but sturdy. Yes, I can not get the height that I am used too from the other tripod. But often I didn't take my medium format camera with me because I couldn't fit the large tripod into my suitcase and I didn't want to pack a larger case. So now there is no excuse anymore. It is a great mix of size, weight, height, and sturdiness. It won't replace my larger Gitzo for local work but it is great to know that this tripod can handle most of my travel needs.
