The Gitzo GT3542 Mountaineer Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripodfrom Gitzo GT3542 Mountaineer Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripodfeatures Carbon eXact tubing, which includes High Modulus carbon fiber in the lower leg sections, adding to their diameters and making the tripod more rigid and stronger than its predecessor. The GT3542 has a load capacity of 55 lb, extends to a maximum height of 63.8", and folds down to 21.3" for transport.

The center column on the tripod can be removed for Ground Level Set, which enables the tripod to reach its lowest height of 5.9". Its four-section legs are secured with twist locks that incorporate G-lock Ultra, which has an internal O-ring to prevent dust and particles from entering the leg system. The top spider has been redesigned to add rigidity, and large leg angle selectors give you more area to grip when readjusting leg angles. A ballast hook on the center column allows you to add weight to increase the tripod's stability.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What screw size are the replaceable feet? 1/4"-20" or 3/8"-16?

A: The bottom of the Gitzo GT3542 tripod accept 3/8"-16 accessories.

Q: 2. What tripod head would be advised with this tripod? I wouldve using it with a Swarovski spotting scope

A: I would recommend the Manfrotto 502 head; https://bhpho.to/2RDzBJj

Q: 3. what is the height with the center column all the way down ?

A: Max Height without Center Column 54.7"

Q: 4. How tall is the GT3532 with the center column not extended? How easily is the column removed to use the tripod without it?What is the maximum height with the column removed?Does this tripod have non-rotating legs?

A: The tripod extended without the column extended is 52.4 inches. And it is about the same with the column taken off.Taking the column out on this model is very easy. This is a new design; a single simple unlocking ring under the column's upper disc frees the column while keeping the upper disc solidly in place on the tripod.

Q: 5. I'm finding the series thing very confusing. I'm looking at a GT2542 legs. What's the difference in the series?

A: Gitzo use Series numbers to provide photographers with a useful guideline to help select and combine products. For tripods, the Series number corresponds to the diameter of the top leg section: the higher the Series number, the larger the diameter of the top tube, and the better the torsional rigidity.

Q: 6. Hi, what is the diameter of GT3542's Power disc ? I know there is a lip on the power disc of the new mountaineer range, I would like to know the diameter within the lip since I want my ball head base fit firmly within the lip of the power disc.

A: the diameter of the disk is 2 3/4 . The lip is flat and is 3/16 wide. Then there is a slanted section for another 3/16 until it reaches the flat bottom.. This gives a 2 diameter for the flat bottom. I use a 55mm really right stuff head which sit on the lip and have not encounter any problem. The head is very well secure even when using a 70-200mm f2.8.Hope this helps

Q: 7. What is the diameter of the head-mount plate on top of the center column on the current model (2018)?

A: The upper disc diameter is 60mm

Q: 8. Does the tripod platform have set screws that function to prevent the head from coming unscrewed? I know that on the GIGT1545T Traveler Series there are no set screws.

A: Yes.

Q: 9. Can the center column be removed and inverted like the traveler models? I know it can be removed and just the base reinstalled for low shots. But I may wish to shoot with the camera suspended beneath the legs at some point. Thanks in advance.

A: Yes this is easy to do. There is a threaded end cap with the hook to hold a weight on the bottom of the center column. This is removed and the column comes completely out once you loosen the locking collar. It can be reversed and locked in place using the same locking collar. There is a guide pin which prevent rotation of the column. Rotation of your camera is accomplished with the head you choose. I have the small ball head and this has worked well. The entire combination is very light and still rigid and works well for travel.

Q: 10. What is the diameter of GT3542's power disc ? I know there is a lip (raise at the edge) on the new mountainner's power disc, I would like to know the inner diameter since I would like my ball head to fit firmly with the power disc.

A: The edge of the disc is very slightly thicker than the main surface as you point out. However it isn't really an abrupt lip, but it slopes up the edge. The flat part of the disc is approximately 1 15/16 . My guess is Gitzo designed it that way to more securely lock down a ball head or gimbel head on the tripod using bit of a taper fit. I give them the benefit of knowing what they are doing, but you should make your own judgement call. My ball head and gimbel head seem to be very secure.

[5.1 lb] I was using an old Gitzo Reporter that I bought literally 30 years ago now, and it served me well that whole time. Fortunately for me - I strapped it to the back of my motorcycle (which I had done many times) and this time it was not there when I arrived. It was never to be seen again - SO - it was time to shop for a new tripod! I say fortunately because had I not lost it - I would probably not have gotten his one.

I went round and round on what to get - as I wanted it to be perfect. I was so used to the stability of my old one - that when l started using my carbon fiber Benro (back up) I was just appalled. I HAD to fix this. I went with the 3542 for the short folded length, the removable short post, and the beefy build. I could have gotten a series one or two - but I am glad I got the three. It's SOLID! And that was my main criteria. I also LOVE the new leg locks - I have seen some problems posted - but I think that is mostly user error - in that you don't need to tighten them or loosen them too much. A short twist and they are good to go. The Gitzo bag is a joke - buy a new one for $20 - but it's good for just keeping it clean. At least they put one in.

[3/8"-16 Male] I'm surprised to find that this Series 1 tripod is as strong and vibration-stable as the same model in Series 2. Save some weight and a few bucks, folks.

[Removable] Light weight and sturdy. The leg sections move smoothly and lock in place with out much effort applied to the twist locks. It is very nice just like the other Gitzo tripod I own.

[Yes] I bought this tripod because I needed a small, sturdy, lightweight tripod that I could fit into a suitcase. My workhorse tripod is a G1345 that's just not suited for travel. The GT0532 will now be my go-to unit for all needs, except when I'm using my 500mm tele. I'm delighted with this unit.

[5.1 lb] This is a heavy duty tripod that is very stable. The legs are strong. I am using it with all my lenses, but especially with my 600mm legs with a Wimberley head. Works great, you will not be disappointed.

[Yes] I no longer have to miss photo opportunities because of a heavy load of gear. The GT1532 is a breeze to carry around and set up, particularly compared to my aluminum tripod. I shot some landscape examples with my walking-around lens and with Canons 11-24mm monster. Not a hint of vibration with either. So far Im delighted with the results. I think the flip lock for leg extension is easier to use on my old model than Gitzos twist lock, but that may simply be a factor of getting used to it. In any event, its a minor irritation compared to the advantages of using a great, lightweight tripod. Definitely recommend it to friends.
