The Gitzo GT3542L Mountaineer Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripodfrom Gitzo GT3542L Mountaineer Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripodfeatures Carbon eXact tubing, which includes High Modulus carbon fiber in the lower leg sections, adding to their diameters and making the tripod more rigid and stronger than its predecessor. The GT3542L has a load capacity of 55 lb, extends to a maximum height of 70", and folds down to 23.2" for transport.

The center column on the tripod can be removed for Ground Level Set, which enables the tripod to reach its lowest height of 6.3". Its four-section legs are secured with twist locks that incorporate G-lock Ultra, which has an internal O-ring to prevent dust and particles from entering the leg system. The top spider has been redesigned to add rigidity, and large leg angle selectors give you more area to grip when readjusting leg angles. A ballast hook on the center column allows you to add weight to increase the tripod's stability.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does the RRS ball head BH-40 fit the Gitzo GT3542L tripod leg?

A: Yes RRS ball head BH-40 does fit the Gitzo GT3542L tripod leg.

Q: 2. Does the Gitzo Center Column Bubble Level GLEVEL1 or GLEVEL2 fit on this tripod, too? I can't find any specific bubble level for series 3.Thank you, Philip

A: No, sorry neither will fit on a 3 series gitzo. If you need a bubble level, I would recommend one that attaches to the hotshoe of your camera.

Q: 3. Hi, what is the diameter of GT3542's Power disc ? I know there is a lip on the power disc of the new mountaineer range, I would like to know the diameter within the lip since I want my ball head base fit firmly within the lip of the power disc.

A: the diameter of the disk is 2 3/4 . The lip is flat and is 3/16 wide. Then there is a slanted section for another 3/16 until it reaches the flat bottom.. This gives a 2 diameter for the flat bottom. I use a 55mm really right stuff head which sit on the lip and have not encounter any problem. The head is very well secure even when using a 70-200mm f2.8.Hope this helps

Q: 4. Is this tripod sturdy enough for a Nikon 600/4 VR mounted on a full Wimberley (WH-200)?

A: I have this tripod with the Wimberley gimbal head. Together they weigh about 7 pounds. I use this rig with a 200-400 and a 1.4TC and my D810 or D750. I get better results with the D750 as there is less sensitivity to micro-blur.The rig is substantial enough for my lens, but I do not know how much heavier/longer your 600mm lens is. I do not think weight is the issue, but you can check the specs and compare. My experience is that it is about technique and settings. I get best results with a bean bag resting on the lens, and if the target is stationary, I use m-up. Also use electronic front curtain shutter. The issue is vibration from the shutter rolling down the lens. I do not think this is a tripod issue. I sometimes use my arm laying on the lens if I am shooting fast enough.

Q: 5. Can the center column be inverted for low level shooting?

A: Yes

Q: 6. What is the warranty?

A: The Gitzo GT2542 Mountaineer Series 2 Carbon Fiber Tripod currently comes with a Limited 6-Month Manufacturer Warranty. This can be extended by 9.5 years with registration.

Q: 7. Trying to compare the Gitzo GT3542L & the GT2543L to some of the CF tripods from Induro. Anybody care to give me your 2 Cents?

A: When you see them side by side you'll but the Gitzo,I was real close to buying the Induro head though but settled on the Kirk BH-1

Q: 8. Is the max load weight with the center column?

A: Yes the maximum load capacity is with the center column.

Q: 9. How would the Gitzo GIGH5380S ball head work with the GT3542 tripod for bird photography with a canon 100-400 lens on a 5D mark 3?

A: I use a Wimberly head on this tripod for bird photography with both the Cannon 100 to 400 lens and the Cannon 600mm lens. I find it is much easier to stay on a bird with the Wimberly head that the Gitzo ball head that I previously used. The balance is much better.

Q: 10. I plan on getting a nikon 600mm f4 & need a tripod that can handle it. This tripod is rated 46.3 lbs payload, more than three times the lense & 800e. The legs are very stable. Is my thinking correct?? Thank you, David Stanfill

A: The Nikon 600mm f4 is a serious lens and for it you will want a serious tripod. The GT3542L Mountaineer Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripod from Gitzo would be a great choice. Of course you would also need an appropriate head for it, but you are thinking correctly.

[Carbon Fiber] Tripod was purchased to support my Nikon D-750. Largest lens being used with the 750 is a Nikon 200-400mm F4, a heavy lens. I'm using a RRS head on the tripod and love this combination and performance. It's short enough to carry on a backpack yet extends to a height sufficient to place my camera at eye height. It's light yet supports nearly three times the weight of my heaviest camera lens combination.

[Yes] I wanted a sturdy tripod to support my 5DS for all sorts of shooting, especially macro, yet light enough to pack into the back country. Well, this is the ticket, light yet incredibly sturdy. Well worth the cost.

[25 x 4.5 x 4.5"] This tripod was purchased for use with the Mamiya 645DF+ camera body, DSLR camera bodies and Kessler Cine Slider. The build quality is excellent. The weight is minimal and feels very solid given how light it is.

[3/8"-16 Male] Really impressed with this tripod. Used it for the first time this week in the Colorado mountains. Very, very solid even in the windy conditions in the mountains. I also have a Gitzo 1540 that I use when I hike but while the 3542L is heavier the stability is noticably greater.

[3/8"-16 Male] I was upgrading from an older, aluminum, series 2 Reporter by Gitzo. I needed something taller and more stable. I bought this one and I also temporarily bought a series 4 systematic to compare it to. I returned the series 4 systematic because it was simply too large for me to travel with. This mountaineer is the latest and largest available from Gitzo in this series, and it is an amazing set of legs! The engineering is excellent. It is large enough to use with the center column all the way down in most cases, and even large enough to only open the leg sections with about 80% extension for each section, thus improving stability.
