The MR-14EX II Macro Ring Lite Flash from Canon is designed for use with Canon macro lenses for close-up photography. With a guide number 34' at ISO 100 per side, its twin tube design allows each flash tube to fire independently, or simultaneously to provide a combined guide number of 46' at ISO 100. White LED focusing lamps and two types of modeling lights allow for accurate previewing of the light's effect.

An illuminated dot-matrix LCD screen lets you make adjustments to the flash in both bright- and low-light situations. The MR-14EX II has 12 custom functions, and supports wireless E-TTL when linked with one or more Speedlite 600EX-RT flashes. The ring flash can be powered by 4x AA batteries or an optional CP-E4 battery pack.

This unit is compatible with the Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro, EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM, EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM, and MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro Photo lenses. If using the EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens, the separate Macrolite Adapter 67 is required; if using the EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM lens, the separate Macrolite Adapter 72C is required.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can I use this flash in conjunction with strobes on radio slave?

A: Yes it works !

Q: 2. Can this be used with Canon Mark 11 Lense 24-105mm 4Lwith IS ?

A: Probably not, to use the flash on any lens other than the original 100mm F2.8 non-IS lens you need a macro lite ring adapter and BH doesn't carry a 77mm one so I don't think Canon makes one in that size. The only sizes listed are 52, 58, 67, and 72mm. The 67 is the most popular as it fits the 100mm F2.8 IS macro lens. The 24-105mm lens has a 77mm filter thread size

Q: 3. My Question is regarding the effective range of 8.8 feet to 16 feet at f2.8 ISO100... If its a Macro photography flash shouldnt it be effective INCHES away? ANd NOT 8.8 feet away?My 600 ex rt is good at these ranges.

A: I have used it both ways. From about 2 inches with the Canon 100mm macro lens, as well as up to 15 ft away. At the longer distances, the nice this is you get portraits with no shadows. However, beware, though it is a great flash unit, Canon made the lens attachment thread only 67mm, which highly limits what lenses you can use it on. In other words, make your homework and make sure the flash will be capable of attaching to the lenses you are going to use, else look for alternatives that have a larger thread mount.

Q: 4. Will this attach to a Sigma 150 Macro (newest version)?

A: The Canon 72C Macrolite Adapter, B&H # CAMLA72C, would be needed to connect the Canon MR-14EX II Macro Ring Lite to the Sigma 150mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM APO Macro Lens (For Canon).

Q: 5. What's the difference between the version I and version II models of the MR-14EX flash?

A: The Canon MR-14EX II has a redesigned user-interface to match the rest of the Canon speedlite line-up, half-stop adjustments instead of full-stop adjustments, faster recycling times, 12 custom functions (up from 7).

Q: 6. Will the MR-14EX work properly with a Canon EOS-1D Mark II?Also, I have a clear filter on my Canon 100mm macro lens. How can I keep this arrangement and still use the MR-14EX? I realize the ring lite will clip on the lens without the filter, but I wish to keep a filter on the end of the lens.Regards ..

A: Yes, the Canon MR-14EX Ring Lite is fully compatible with the Canon EOS 1D Mk II camera. The Ring Lite is designed to fit onto both/either Canon 100mm macro lenses in the same manner that a lens hood mounts to each lens (bayonet type fit on the outer perimeter of the lens) and as such will allow you to leave your clear filter on the lens.

Q: 7. Is this flash compatible with the Canon SL3?

A: Yes, this is compatible with the canon SL3 camera.

Q: 8. Is there a mode to set the flash to auto-off after a period of non-use to save batteries?

A: The MR-14EX II can be set to auto-off using the Custom Functions feature C.Fn.01. Please refer to page 61 in the manual for step by step instructions: http://bit.ly/2caYHdW

Q: 9. Can the Canon MR-14EX be used in conjunction with the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens adapted to a Fujifilm GFX 100S?

A: The Canon MR-14EX II Macro Ring Lite would only be able to be used in manual mode on the FUJIFILM GFX 100S Medium Format Mirrorless Camera.

Q: 10. I have a 100mm non-is Canon macro lens, with Canon hood. Will I need to remove the hood to use this flash?

A: yes

[4] I am very happy with the ringlight. It allows me to get shots I could not have gotten before and allows hand-held shots where a tripod would have been needed. Since most of my pictures are live animals in their natural habitat, they generally won't hang around while I set up a tripod and lighting. My only complaint so far is that the light is rather harsh, often leaving a bright image of the two flashes in the subjects eyes or refected on shiny parts of its anatomy. Seems like there should be some sort of diffuser option built in. Or maybe there is and I just haven't discovered it yet.

[4] A MUST HAVE USE WITH 100MM 2.8 IS MACRO BRINGS OUT THE DETAIL OFTEN LOST WHEN USING OTHER LIGHTING. EASY TO ADJUST LIGHT TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT TUBES. REQUIRES ADAPTER RING WITH MOST LENSES.

[1/1 to 1/128] I'm a dentist. For almost two years, I made do with the 100macro and overhead lamp for lighting whenever I wanted to take photos of my patient's teeth. It's useful to communicate color, shape/contour with my lab so that we can get the best restoration possible. But I was never pleased with the white balance and the lighting was never consistent from the lamp. So since upgrading to the 100L, I decided it was time to provide additional illumination that I can depend on and rely upon. I debated whether to go with the more expensive MR-24, or just make do with the MR-14. I'm glad I went with the ring lite. The size is just perfect for my needs. I suppose if I was going for insect macros, the MR-24 might be better suited. But then again, I haven't attempted any insect macros with the MR-14 and it may also do just as well in that arena. In any case, now I have a much more reliable, consistent color temperature so I can properly adjust and correct it during processing before printing and sending the images off to the lab. I certainly would recommend the MR-14EX to my peers.

[4] I use it in my dental office to shoot intra and extra oral photography for my cosmetic cases and Invisalign work ups, and to document large cases. It's easy to use, responsive, reliable and has very quick recharge rate so there's no waiting between shots.
