A: The pin, there is only one, simply assists to help place the plate accurately on the base of a camera i.e. parallel to the body. The plate actually has more holes for the pin, i.e. fits more cameras, than the diagram reveals but should suit your Canon just fine (though, caution, I use Nikon). However, it's not essential to use it and, at least in my case, the pin came separated from the plate. So, fit it or not. My reason for choosing this plate versus the other is its length. I want stability, so the more length the better, in my view. Aesthetically, on the Nikon, it sits/looks better too, than the square version does, but hardly a reason to drive a purchase decision, As for price, it's just a few dollars more, they are very close. I guess you pay for the extra length.

A: It is doable but not practical, it's a little on the small side. I use that particular model for my Fuji X100, where it's just right. I would suggest going with the regular Arca Swiss system, I use a Really Right Stuff L-Plate which I just leave on the camera.
