The Arca-Swiss Monoball X-Table Systemfrom Arca-Swiss Monoball X-Table Systemis a geared optical bench designed specifically for macro photography. It comprises two finely geared 8" rails mounted at right angles, in X and Y axes. The rails are etched with millimeter markings along their length to aid in proper focus. The rails run through two cross-mounted focusing carriers which allow for fine camera movement along their length. Both carriers feature a friction knob and an adjustment knob so you can position your camera with extreme accuracy. The top carrier has an Arca-Swiss MonoballFix quickset clamp on top with which to mount your camera. The clamp has an incorporated bullseye level to aid in alignment. The base monorail can be mounted directly into a quick release clamp without a quick release plate.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can I remove the top clamp and replace it with a normal classic arca swiss clamp plate?

A: While no reports of doing this have been made and we cannot test it, it is our opinion that the Arca-Swiss MonoballFix Quickset Device that is on top and which holds the quick release plate that it should be easily removable.

Q: 2. What tripod mounting plate is required to mount this system on a standard tripod head?

A: You need an Arca Swiss Z1 plate

Q: 3. Can the second rail be removed when not needed?

A: you cannot remove the second rail as its part of the construction.

Q: 4. Will this take any arca type plate (like the 3 Legged Thing QR4-EQ Quick Release Plate B&H # 3LQR4 MFR # QR4) or does it need a monoballfix camera plate?

A: An Arca-Swiss plate would be guaranteed to fit https://bhpho.to/2OB7pbP. A Arca compatible plate would most likely fit but can't be guaranteed.

Q: 5. On this MonoballFix version can you rotate the top clamp plate. If you can is there any alignment guide to help align the axis of the clamp exactly 0 0r 90 degrees from the rails?

A: The QR clamp on this system cannot be rotated.

Q: 6. Can the clamp be rotated 90 degrees?

A: Yes, the Arca-Swiss Monoball Macro-Table System Fliplock can rotate 90 degrees.

Q: 7. Hi thereI definitely want to purchase the p0 bullhead and possibly in the near future the cube, but for now just the p0. The problem I have is that I am coming from manfrotto and have absolutely no knowledge of the quick release plates made by arca swiss. It appears that there are several different types of arca swiss quick release plate i can order from your store. Which is the best all round? Which would give me the best integration if i purchased a different tripod head (such as the cube ) in the future? We cannot purchase arca swiss in New Zealand so i can't physically see what i am buying. I want a long term solution that would cover multiple heads and as many accessories as possible. Which of the p0 quick release /plate combinations would you most recommend? Thanks very much

A: The Arca-Swiss tripod/quick release system is more or less a universal quick release system for many different tripod manufacturers that do not use their own proprietary quick release system (e.g., Manfrotto). I advise the P0 ballhead with the classic quick release, as this quick release system will be adaptable to numerous heads.

Q: 8. How much turn does the knurled ring travels from the complete lose state to get fully tightened? One turn (360deg) or half turn (180 deg) or one quarter (90deg)?

A: The turn is about 170-180 degrees to fully tighten it.

Q: 9. does it has panning function? does it good for Sony A7R2? any other ball head with panning system suggest?

A: It's design makes it an inherently accurate panning head IE-the ball on the bottom, the panning on the top. Once the camera is level, the pan will be level.

Q: 10. What is the rated support weight for this rail system?

A: The support weight would be based on the head being used with the rails system.

[1.945 lb] The action is not the smoothest but works well enough. It is very light and compact but more than strong enough to hold a D3s with a 300/4 on and a Z7ii with the 50/1.2 with the body mounted on the head. I think it will work well on a monopod as well.

It does need an arca Swiss mount on it. I tried to save weight by using the 1/4" mount directly and it is very clumsy.

[1/4"-20] This is the best option for a ball head if you shoot panoramic's. It negates the need for a leveling base on your tripod. The lockup is convenient and solid. It weighs less than a pound even after an Arca clamp of your choosing is installed. I installed a SS 3/8 x 1-1/2 fender washer between the P0 and Arca clamp so that the clamp knob would clear the Panning knob on the P0. Highly recommended.....

[Yes] I suffered for a long time with lightweight heads that didn't hold tension and that flopped easily. Finally decided on one of these and it made such a difference. The weight of the head itself adds stability to the overall platform. You can fine tune at multiple points. I can point my 4x5 straight at the ground. Tightens and stays tight. Because of the movements, I often use it with my Blackmagic Cinema camera. Great item.

[1/4"-20] Just to not confuse any readers, I bought an earlier version of this ballhead about 30+ years ago. I do not know if the workmanship or the quality is the same. The difference I see between mine and this new one is that the new one now contains a round platform and the plate on top whereas mine has the clamp attached directly to the to of the ballhead. I am really pleased how mine works after all this time. I love the two knobs because they do exactly what I want them to do. I have acquired RRS ballheads which I also really like and s couple of other quality brands that do the job. I seem to have a love of ballheads as I have many pro Nikon cameras with different lenses attached for quick access so I keep them available to attach to tripods. My next purchase will be this new version (at least for me) because I am really pleased with my old one that still works like new after all these years. I love the RRS ballheads but I already have three of them so I want another Arca-Swiss. The only thing I don't like about Arca-Swiss is their quick release plates, they suck. That is unless they changed them in the last 5 years. The levers do not keep them tight on the camera plates, or at least don't one the 2 I own. I like the RRS ones much better, but I still only buy the screw knob plates as I don't trust the quick release levers.

[1.57 lb (712 g)] I was in the market for a macro rail system but needed the dual adjustability of x-y axis. My photos are often taken in steep and rocky terrain where the luxury of nudging your tripod an inch or so sideways doesn't always exist. The Arca-Swiss table system was intriguing and since owning other Arca-Swiss products, I took a chance on this one having the same great quality. The advertised photo is confusing since it shows the bottom rail locked into the jaws of the MonoballFix clamp. That is where your camera plate needs to be instead. OK it didn't take too long to figure the problem. I really like the friction knobs that help to secure the adjustment knobs. The gearing is so well manufactured that if your camera were pointing at any angle besides level, the camera's weight could allow for some creeping due to gravity. I use this device with a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens. To affix the lens to the MonoballFix clamp, I suggest that you also purchase a tripod mounting ring for the lens and an Arca-Swiss 75 mm camera plate. This is a good product and I have no regrets for making the purchase.

[1/4"-20] I tend to shoot small objects indoors, so purchasing this head worked out well for me. First of all, the change in the field of view by gear operation is small. Secondly, the head itself is small and simple to operate.
If you're using a mirrorless camera or DSLR, this head is rigid enough. I didn't test it on a large format camera.
The feel of the operation is very good. The exterior design is also solid and beautiful.
I can confidently recommend it.

The good points stand out, but there are also a few complaints...
- The Arca-Swiss unique mount (Fix) makes it difficult to set the camera. (It seems to be solved by making a simple spacer by yourself.)
- I also want a pan gear.
- The gears are too solid and my fingers hurt.

[1.945 lb] Part II

When I first read about this unique ball head from Arca Swiss, I lusted after one. Arca Swiss has placed its smooth, aspherical ball at its bottom and panning above, enabling effective camera leveling without having to tediously level the tripod. It utilizes only two quick and easily identifiable controls which strikes me as the ultimate in simplicity and smooth, intelligent operation without having to give momentary mental energy to deciding ‘now, which knob does what?’ when the light on my subject is shifting by the second.

The Arca Swiss architecture makes leveling the camera an effortless task, requiring nearly no time, nor attention, when preparing for video or still panning.

So this head would be the obvious choice for a kit specially designed for iPhone photography by a photographer who would prefer as few needless distractions from capturing an ephemeral image as possible.

Given that this head would be topped off by a smartphone adaptor, another attraction of the Arca Swiss is its precise slot for 90˚ orientation—perfect for smoothly and effortlessly switching from horizontal to vertical image orientation (or vice versa) with supreme control and without a lot of flopping or fiddling corrections. Perfect for my Aries wife’s birthday!
