As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens' is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.

This lens has been designed using an advanced optical structure to achieve both high resolution and sharpness along with an aesthetic out-of-focus quality for greater subject separation. A molded glass aspherical element corrects for sagittal coma flare and enables full use of the fast f/1.4 maximum aperture with maintained sharpness and clarity. This design also works to minimize vignetting, color blur, and other distortions help to produce natural and pleasing bokeh for selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques. By reducing these aberrations, this lens is also well-suited to astrophotography or other situations with point-light sources due to its ability to suppress blur near the edges of the frame.

Three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements have been incorporated within the lens design to correct for axial chromatic aberration throughout the entire focusing range. This helps to ensure maintained image sharpness, clarity, and contrast regardless of focus point or aperture setting.

In designing the lens with a large 85.4mm diameter, and placing the widest elements within the front group, greater peripheral brightness is more easily attained when working with larger apertures. This design also lends itself to minimizing vignetting throughout the aperture range for greater clarity and detail across the image frame.

A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.

By employing a floating system, the distance between glass elements is adjusted during focusing in order to limit the amount of lens movement required when shooting. This floating system helps to realize a minimum focusing distance of 1.3' with a maximum magnification of 1:5.6. Additionally, this design also contributes to high detail rendering capabilities throughout the entire focusing range.

The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.

  • A rounded nine-blade diaphragm helps to produce an attractive out-of-focus quality.
  • The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material, along with traditional metals, for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations. The outside of the lens barrel is also engraved with the year of production.
  • The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability.
  • The included lens hood is fitted with a rubber connection for a secure fit.
  • This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this work for video with a camera that doesn't have image stabilization either? I'm worried about the micro-jitters. Telephoto lenses tend to pronounce vibrations. I'm always on a monopod, tripod, or gimbal for reference.

A: Yes it will.

Q: 2. Is this lens compatible with Sony a7 series via the Metabones EF to e-mount adapter Mk III?

A: Yes but get the Sigma adapter so you can take advantage of eye focus. Love the quality

Q: 3. I am looking for a wide angle to use primarily for night (star, trails and Milky Way) photography. Has anyone tried this lens for that purpose?Thank you,

A: I bought this lens exclusively for night photography. It was very sub-standard. Most of the reviews were glowing, but as an astrophotographer I found it to be one of the worst I'd ever used. Wide open to f1/4 or even to f2.5 it gave me VERY bad stars around the edges of the frame all the way into about 1/3 of the image all around. The stars in those areas looked like large comets. You had to stop it down to about f4 to see any noticeable improvement. Also, I like to put a star filter over my lenses to create the starburst effect on my shots, but since this lens protrudes out the front of the barrel you can't put filters on it. I returned the lens.Oh, I have seen a few good reviews on this lens for astrophotography. I should note that I DO NOT just look at my photos on a computer screen. I sell my work, usually in 20 x30 prints, but sometimes in VERY LARGE (wall mural) sizes. So I CAN'T have comets for stars on the edges of my photos; they will be huge blobs when enlarged. I ended up buying the Nikon 20mm f1.8. It's not bad, even wide open.

Q: 4. What pouch fits this lens?

A: Sigma 20mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Canon EF dimensions are 3.57 x 5.11" / 90.7 x 129.8 mm. This lens comes with it's own padded case in the box. If you prefer a neoprene lens pouch the following option will fit the lens with the lenshood on reverse. LensCoat LensPouch (Medium Wide, Black) BH #LELCLPMWBK • MFR #LCLPMWBK https://bhpho.to/3Vhexeb

Q: 5. How does the image quality of this lens compare to that of Nikon 20mm 1.8?

A: This lens has a much better image quality overall then the 1.8 version from Nikon. It really does produce a spectacular image that will wow you. Sigma really nailed the Art series. I am a loyal Nikon shooter and this is the only non Nikon lens in my bag, but very glad I bought it.

Q: 6. Has anyone had any issues with the Sigma 20mm 1.4 on the Canon 5D Mark IV?

A: I haven't so far. I've had it for about 4 months now I think. It's great to minimize the crop factor for the 4K video mode and works out to be almost 35mm when in 4K video which is my primary focal length I shoot at.

Q: 7. How's the focus on this lens? I've heard that it's hard to focus. Looking for a good wide angle lens.

A: Both auto focus and manual focus works fine on my 20mm, f/1.4

Q: 8. Is the manual focus on this lens mechanical or fly by wire?

A: The lens is Both Auto Focus and Manual Focus by rotating the large Focus ring up front.

Q: 9. Is there any autofocus noise when using with mc-11 like the 18-35 has?

A: I use this lens with a 5D Mark III. I've experienced virtually no sound as this lens acquires focus. This lens is excellent - focus is sharp, colors true and low light performance is as good as any I've used.

Q: 10. I'm looking at this lens for video production, how is the focus breathing with the lens? Is it minor or fairly noticeable?

A: it does but its minor imo

[46.8°] As with some Sigma art lenses you worry about autofocus issues. This one is great. I took it to a shoot without putting on the usb dock and it did great. I shot mostly in low light and high contrast lighting. It was live music with bad lighting kit . I shot at f/1.4 to f/2.0 mostly and it rocked it . I was under the impression it was a little soft at f/1.4 . I must have a good copy because I can tell no difference than with my Sigma Art 40mm . This is just looking at real world photo not test charts . The images seem to have a special character that the 40mil in all its perfection doesn’t have . Think in part it’s the heavy vignetting it has . Some folks may not like that , for me and live music it’s mostly a boon . I dig it . For landscape it clears up when you close down that aperture.
I did dial it in on my usb dock and it’s one of the most accurate focusing lenses I own . Some low contrast situations will trick it up . And it’s a fairly fast focusing lens , definitely my fastest wide angle .
The color is deep and rich and Sigma good . I like the color myself from these newest Sigma art lenses. The 135mm art and the 180mm f/2.8 dg hsm os have a little yellowish tint . Especially the 180 .
Sigma just keeps stepping up their game . I’ve heard they are done developing lenses for DSLRs. I just sure the Art and contemporary designations and quality stays with the mirrorless system.

[9, Rounded] F mount, on Nikon D850: I have used this lens for group photos, landscapes and although it is obviously not a macro lens, it works well for occasional close-ups. Color rendition is natural, better than some other high regarded third party lenses; it has better edge resolution and much less distortion than one lens that cost me 3 times the price of this Sigma.

[f/16] Like most photographers you want to limit the lenses you own so as to reduce costs and weight. In weight category you might do better however, if image character that instantly stands out in sharp natural but vivid color and a pronounced 3 dimensional feel is what you want, you would be hard pressed to find better. Beautiful complex optical formula that few companies will venture toward in the near future it is instantly recognizable as soon as you look into the viewfinder. This lens is worth the weight. No amount of post-processing will bring an above average lens close to this one.

[Autofocus] I have previously shot travel film photography on various 28mm lenses. Moving over to shooting digitally on Sony Mirrorless while traveling with my family, the autofocus and fast 1.4 aperture makes for easy point and shoot capabilities in a variety of environments. 28mm is a great focal length for capturing faces and places. Would highly recommend this lens especially at the price point!

[f/1.4] I was shocked to see that so few people rated this lens! 28mm is super underrated in my opinion. I find that with a good 28 I can ditch the 24 and the 35 and shoot for hours without the need to swap between lenses. The next wider prime in my kit is the 21mm Loxia and they are far enough apart that it's very clear when I need to switch. But the main reason why the 28mm is so great is because when I crop an image to a 4x5 ratio, I get the same FOV as the classic landscape lenses of the past, like a 65mm on 6x7 or a 120mm on 4x5. So for anyone who wants that classic feel on a modern full frame camera, the Sigma 28mm is the best option.

As for the lens, it's what we've come to expect from the Sigma Art series. Modern build quality, premium feel and way oversized. Its insanely sharp across the whole frame at all but the most extreme apertures. At typical landscape apertures it outresolves the 42mp sensor of the A7rII by quite a bit it seems. I wouldn't be surprised if it still looked great on a 100mp sensor.

I feel like I have tried all 24s and 35s for the Sony E, only to realize that the solution was this 28mm. So if you find yourself in that situation, just do yourself a favor and grab it. You won't regret it :)

[Autofocus] I purchased this lens when it was on sale, based on its reputation as one of the best optical lenses made.
The quality rivals the Zeiss Otus 28 mm lens, and that's saying something.
The best part of this design, is that it's optically perfect while producing artistic images. This is a significant achievement, unlike most highly corrected lenses which produce sterile images.
Highly recommended!

[f/1.4] I just love this lens. It gives amazing Bokeh effect even at such 28mm wide angle. Its so sharp lens. I am using it with my Canon 5D Mark IV.

[50mm] I own two other Sigma lenses. This lens is a wonderful product. Sharp images and quick focus response. Great landscape lens.

[Full-Frame] I expected sharp images from other reviews and past experience with Sigma, but worried they would be sterile, flat, and without the depth of contrast from my stable of Zeiss lenses. I am very impressed however with the combination of sharpness and contrast which creates a very strong 3d image. I haven't shot anything from Canon or Sigma with this much depth, and I don't regret going with the 28mm over the Zeiss competition.

For others like myself cross shopping against Zeiss, it's not a strong contrast like the distagon 35mm f2 but it is present and neutral. Shadow detail/recovery as well has control of highlights surprised me again, my Canon (eos R) sensor was the limit rather than optical limits. Flare resistance is a weakness noted by reviewers and I found the highlight control sufficient to overcome the loss of contrast in post. Harsh light in landscape scenarios aren't handled as gracefully as my Zeiss compliment. Color is nuanced but not overly saturated.

I greatly miss the manual focus of Zeiss and almost considered returning it for that reason, but it produces some special images in a form factor and focal length I needed for my travel bag. If your goal is a transparent window into the scene, this lens will provide that. If enamored with the drawing style of lenses past this isn't the best choice, but it does allow flexibility in post to extract shadow and color nuance to create a more classic look.

[f/1.4] Bought this to get a little wider than the 35mm Art. Exceptional build quality, quick and accurate focus, and very satisfied with the results. Like most Sigma lenses, it’s substantial in weight, but Im getting used to it. Very happy with this lens. Great walk around lens.
