Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will there be other camera control additions, like for the Canon C70?

A: There is camera control for RED DMSC2, RED Komodo, Sony Venice, and ARRI cameras. They may announce for Canon. Please watch the B&H webpage for updates.

Q: 2. How do I get this to control my red dsmc2 gemini?

A: The monitor can be used with optional paid software upgrades that enable camera control access to RED DSMC2 and KOMODO cameras. These software licenses allow users to control camera functions and project settings such as Start/Stop Record, FPS, Shutter Speed, ISO, Color Temperature/White Balance, and Clip Playback. But you need to have the DSMC2 control license firmware.

Q: 3. Good morning, does the SmallHD Indie 7 monitor use the DSM3 control specifically for the Komodo X camera?

A: The SmallHD Indie 7 RED RCP2 Monitor Kit for KOMODO/DSMC3 will also support the RED Komodo-X camera as well. The Komodo-X is a DSMC3 camera body.

Q: 4. Does this require two batteries to operate without DC power?

A: No, the dual battery configuration would allow you to hot swap batteries when using the SmallHD INDIE 5 Touchscreen On-Camera Monitor so it can be continuously powered when you are away from wall power. Yes, you can work with a single battery in the INDIE 5 display.

Q: 5. Can you assign the SDI input to one page and the HDMI to another page, and quickly swipe between them?

A: We recommend using the custom function buttons to switch from SDI to HDMI when using the SmallHD CINE 5 Touchscreen On-Camera Monitor.

Q: 6. If you send this monitor a 4096x2160 signal it gets a gray line right through the middle of the screen. Turns out is can only handle a 3840 x 2160 HDMI input signal. Is there any workaround - so if i Need to shoot in the bigger 4k size and not see a gray line right down the middle?

A: Almost all cameras have the ability to change the output resolution independently of the recording resolution. For example, you can tell the camera to output 3840x2160 (or even 1920x1080) and this will have no effect on your ability to record 4096x2160.

Q: 7. Does this monitor work with the teradek rt focus overlay?

A: Yes, RT overlays begin were introduced with OS3 and are currently available in PageOS 5.

Q: 8. Does this monitor have cross-conversion between HDMI & SDI?

A: Yes, The SmallHD INDIE 5 Touchscreen On-Camera monitor supports Cross conversion: HDMI to SDI, SDI to HDMI.

Q: 9. What is the weight?

A: Per the SmallHD website, the SmallHD CINE 5 Touchscreen On-Camera Monitor weighs 14.7 oz.

Q: 10. is there latency with the sdi loop out?

A: There is always a chance of latency depending on what kind of SDI cable you're using, how far you're running it, and what device you're sending it to, but that latency should remain low - maybe a few frames - and not be affected by looping the signal through the SmallHD INDIE 7 Touchscreen On-Camera Monitor (BH #SMMONINDIE7 • MFR #MON-INDIE-7).

[5:4] Bought this during a B&H flash sale. It has all the good features and high NITS that you'd expect from a monitor at this price point. I like having the inputs/outputs on the bottom rather than the side. The battery plate integrates nicely on the back. If you use it with a Canon R5C as I do on occasion, you can power the monitor off a small gold mount or v-mount battery and use the power tap to power camera with a dummy battery. Will also convert HDMI in to SDI out which is useful for multi-camera setups going into the same monitor.

Niggling complaints: If light weight is important to you, this is kind of heavy compared to some other models. Also, I wish SmallHD would put their recessed anti-twist holes at the same distance as ARRI does.

[1] This is exactly what I've been looking for. It may be pricey for a complete beginner but it is worth it. It could be a little large for a smaller camera. The size of the screen draws many eyes to it, and people love to critique. Also it makes reviewing clips more enjoyable WHEN THE ENTIRE CREW IS TRYING TO LOOK. All my comments refer to not having a director's monitor on set.

[75 x 75 mm] I purchased the Shinobi 7 to put on my Komodo originally as it was half the price of the Indie 7, but after deciding to exchange it, I was so glad I did. This monitor is bright, quick, intuitive, and just works. It's been put through multiple 10 hour days and it adds so much easy functionality that you need out of a professional monitor. If you're in the market for a monitor ; just buy this one, you won't regret it.

[1] I upgraded from my Action 5 to this monitor and holy smokes what a difference. This thing makes it so easy to see what you are filming and the monitor outputs what the camera is capturing.

[Resistive] First off, the SmallHD PageOS operating system is by far the best I have used and is why this system is worth a significant premium over monitors with similar*cough* specs. If you need easy access to a fully customizable array of professional tools INSTANTLY, there really is nothing like it. I strongly suggest reading the full PageOS manual and also looking at some of the Exposure Tools tutorials. The fully customizable false color exposure assist that has multiple presets you can flip between is a fantastic tool worth fully exploring.

This is my third SmallHD monitor, and every one has been great. The design evolution is really obvious, and attention to the details is great. The Ultra is built like a tank and pretty heavy, so keep that in mind when chosing a mount. I use a magic-arm, or a SHAPE pushbutton monitor bracket. Don't cheap out on the mounting.

Image quality is quite good, with nice color gamut. (Note: Color has some shift in high-brightness mode, but if you need it that bright you arent judging color visually). Standard brightness mode is really really bright. More than I need in 99% of situations. High Brightness mode is visible in extremely bright conditions, like desert/beach/water, but you will still want a proper hood.
Note: the SmallHD hood is not adequate, just too small, and the open bottom for touchscreen access makes it ineffective. Considering the monitor has full physical buttons and does not NEED to be operated as a touchscreen, a full four sided soft hood would work way better.

Overall I am very satisfied.
