The Black Box USB Laptop Console Crash Cart Adapterfrom Black Box USB Laptop Console Crash Cart Adapterprovides a compact way to get immediate BIOS-level access to your server. The cart is the laptop that you carry to the server and, using the adapter, you can plug in to obtain quick server access. Connect to the video port of any crashed server to perform emergency system recovery, carry out routine system maintenance, or perform a server task of your choice.

By emulating a USB keyboard and mouse, the USB laptop adapter and its software enables you to interact with the target server as a window on your laptop. For server connections, the adapter has a built-in VGA video and USB keyboard/mouse connectors. On the laptop side, it features a high-speed (480 Mb/s) USB mini type (B) connector with a detachable USB cable for server-to-laptop links. For older PS/2 style keyboards, there is a passive PS/2 to USB adapter included*. The fully hot-pluggable adapter requires no external power, thus making it portable and easy to use.

The adapter comes with versatile video scaling options. With this adapter, all the software is copied to your laptop without the need to load any drivers or software on the server. The adapter's software gives you real-time video scaling so you can always see the entire screen, even on small laptop displays. Enlarge the window to use all pixels of your laptop (with or without the laptop taskbar seen), or shrink to view another application next to it. Video adjustments also include sample phase sharpening and video noise filtering. Moreover, upon rebooting the connected system, the software interface gives you command line interface and BIOS-level visibility from start to finish. You can even take screen snapshots (as PNG or JPEG files) for system analysis later.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How does this cart accomodate traveling as checked baggage? Must it be stored in its own case or bag?

A: I have travelled with these carts for over 30 years, in the USA and all over Europe. You must check them in baggage and you cannot carry them on. Now things are changing rapidly in the travel industry so that may changed, but I have, up till now, not had any issues.

Q: 2. Is this product compatible with Andrig

A: The Sabrent AU-MMSA USB Stereo 3D Sound Adapter (Black) B&H # SAAUMMSA is Windows and Mac Compatible.

Q: 3. What is the difference between this box and the THS3? They look the same except the knobs are labeled different.

A: The difference between the Whirlwind THS 3 Talkback Headphone Box and Sports Announcer Console with Left/Right Headphone Volume Controls and the Whirlwind THS 4 Talkback Headphone Box and Sports Announcer Console with Individual Input Volume Controls is the way the signal is routed and how the rotary controls affect the signal. On the THS 3, the left volume control is used to adjust the volume of the left earpiece and the right volume control is used to adjust the volume of the right earpiece. The controls on the THS 4 are used to adjust the input volume levels for input 1 and input 2 before the signal feeds to the input assignment switches. The controls on the THS 3 affect the volume level after the signal passes through the input assignment switches. The input assignment switches for both the THS 3 and THS 4 allow you to configure the routing for the two channels and select whether the audio signal is sent to the left earpiece, right earpiece, or to both earpieces.

Q: 4. Is this backwards compatible with USB 3.0 (USB A)?

A: Yes, that should work.

Also you may patch a pair of outputs to the monitor bus for use with studio monitors.

Q: 9. Is the Aux out a TRS balanced output?

[0.9 lb] Simply essential tool. No need for screen and keyboard anymore, just plug into any server and access it. Do need a HDMI convertor

[0.9 lb] This is a great tool. You do want to be sure to get the correct drivers; notecons01 and notecons02 are different. Also, a note to Startech: it's hard to find this in the list of KVM switches. This really could use its own category.

[RoHS, CE] I repair servers and in data centers and many client site this tool has saved me many hours of waiting. It was always important to watch the the server complete it post on power on. It is certainly worth it.

[RoHS, CE] This device is one of the best gadgets I've ever bought. I used to connect to servers using standard monitor, mouse and keyboard. No more messing with vga/power cables to get monitor working. This device saved me already lots of time that I would otherwise waste on finding, connecting and moving monitor.

[RoHS, CE] I have been planning on buying this since it was announced and only recently got to it. I have worked in the field for 15 years and consider this (conceptually) to be pretty much the most useful thing in a toolkit after a Phillips screwdriver.

The device works really well, I have used it both under Mac OSX 10.9 and Windows 7 at this time, it assists me both in the server room, and at my desk. No longer do I require a dedicated spare Keyboard/Mouse/Monitor at my desk, nor do I need to worry about connecting to our servers that do not have KVM functionality.

I have run into a single issue with the device which I suspect is a limitation of Apple hardware, I was unable to activate the boot menu on a Mac Mini using the host, I ended up plugging a keyboard in to trigger the event, still using the NOTECONS01 for Monitor access. For me this was not a deal breaker at all (I did try several things and settings adjustments without success).

If you are a technician that plans on using this in the field extensively I would recommend packing a DVI to VGA, as well as a MiniDP to VGA (active) and MiniDP to DP adapter. This will ensure you can connect the device to any display output you are likely to encounter in the field.

If you are thinking this will be an invaluable tool for working in the field/datacenter, you will be happy with this products performance.

[0.9 lb] I bought this a few months ago to help with repairing offline servers. Now I don't have to worry about the KVM, keyboard, monitor or mouse work (or are missing) at the remote site. This also works with Windows 10

[0.4 lb (0.2 kg)] We purchased these because we often need to console a system in the field and console using the lights out management interface isn't reliable. With this KVM Console we can use our laptops to access the console on our systems in the field instead of configuring remote console over Ethernet and relying on out of band management to access our system consoles.
