Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Would 2mm or 3mm filters fit in the metal trays?

A: Yes, the maximum thickness that can fit is 4mm.

Q: 2. Will this work on a 5D mark IV?

A: While this is designed for the 5D Mark III, the 5D Mark IV has a similar design including the same sized screen at 3.2 . We believe it should work with the 5D Mark IV as well.

Q: 3. The 85mm lens opening sounds non-standard. If the cinema lenses I'm considering have an 80mm opening, is it safe to expect this matte box to be able to clamp down from 85mm to 80mm in order to grip the cinema lens properly?

A: The Cavision 3x3 Matte Box Package has a flexible material draw-string light trap that will accommodate lenses from 85mm down to 50mm. This will prevent stray light from hitting the filters in the matte box from the rear.

Q: 4. May I use this matte box with the Zunow WCX-80 wide angle lens on a Sony FDR AX-100 camera with no vignetting? Thanks

A: This combination is unknown and the answer would only come from testing the components together. Having said that, we feel that the camera with its lens at the widest mm setting plus wearing the Zunow most likely will cause vignetting with the matte box. The vignetting should go away if you zoom in slightly.

Q: 5. Can this matte box be clamped to a lens that has an 82mm attachment thread? Or do I need a step-up ring in order for the clamp to be secure? I have a zoom lens (24-70mm) that I'm looking to clamp to a DLSR. Would ideally like to avoid using a rail system.

A: Unfortunately, there is no Cavision 82mm to 85mm diameter available. And unless the lens's outer diameter is exactly 85mm, we are not able to make a recommendation. Cavision requests that you contact them directly. Cavision Tel: 604-298-9053 Website a href= http://www.cavision.com/ target= _blank http://www.cavision.com//a Email info@cavision.com.

Q: 6. Will this fit (i.e., clear the overhead handle/built-in mic section) the Panasonic AG-UX180 camera?

A: We feel that the low overhanging mic on that camera could be a potential issue, but there should be enough room if you insert the rotating filter tray from the bottom instead of the top. Also, you will need a support system to use the Matte Box with the UX180. B&H number CARS15IIMQRB is a baseplate set up that has the Matte Box holder included.https://bhpho.to/2j2qjoF

Q: 7. I have a bmpcc and Veydra lenses. They are 77mm. Will this matte box work with those?

A: The Veydra has a 77mm lens diameter or a 80mm diameter with the hood. Since the Cavision matte box can accommodate 50mm-80mm diameters with the inculded flexibel Donut Ring, you are good to go.

Q: 8. I wand use Canon 5D Mark III body with Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM & Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM FOLLOW FOCUS GEAR RINGS & FOLLOW FOCUS GEARS in coming in the box or I need Order separate

A: The follow focus gear rings are not included, and you will need to contact Cavision to find out what the appropriate size gears you should use for your lenses. Cavision does not specify what pitch the gears are nor their sizes. http://bit.ly/1mPi5JC

Q: 9. I am looking for the adapter ring to use this donut with my 4x4 Cavision matte box. Can anyone point me to that adapter?

A: Since Cavision Matte Boxes come in different sizes, please email us with your request stating which Matte Box you have so that we can get you the right adapter. provideo@a href= http://bhphoto.com target= _blank bhphoto.com/a

Q: 10. Would the viewfinder fit a Nikon D810? Does it have an adjustable diopter? Thanks!

A: Cavision recommends:a href= http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/763118-REG/Cavision_MH3Q_RSD_F_L_Shoulder_Pad_Package_with.html target= _blank http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/763118-REG/Cavision_MH3Q_RSD_F_L_Shoulder_Pad_Package_with.html/aas a better fitting option for the Nikon D810.

[270°] Despite being largely of ABS construction, this matte box is surprisingly sturdy. Everything locks and tightens firmly and stays in place during use. So far I'm very impressed with this unit, it provides affordable, light weight light control, ideal for cameras with lenses up to 85mm diameter. Also, I'm from the UK and it arrived from the USA in less than a week. Many thanks B&H.

[1.38 lb] Here is a real matte box. The right size and weight for small modern cameras. There are, to be fair, a couple of small annoyances, but they are easily overcome with some minor engineering. Considering that no two camera systems are identical, Cavision has done a great job. Two filter slots are enough (one rotates), the flags are fine and work well. Donuts would be good, but can be made; the nun's knickers are OK for most lenses. I had used this on a shoot, loved it, bought one...and will by another...

[85 mm Opening] Ok first off, B&H kinda vets their stuff so I wasn't heistatant to take a chance on this matt box. Upon opening I was surprised for I was expecting a product of way lesser quality. All this thing needs to do is hold filters and block a direct hit from the sun from hitting the lens. I trust that it can do just that and for under a hundred bucks!

Also i was surprised at it's ample tooling making it possible to remove the top and side flags if needed, which will be a plus for me for I'm trying to build my rig as light as possible for handheld / gimbal use.

I didn't want to spend 500-700 on something like PolarPro base kit. I compared weights between their Base Camp and this thing here with the top flag and a filter. The Cavision came in at about 40grams heavier which is about the same weight as two 77mm plastic Canon lens caps. At this price i'll buy two and keep a spare.

This thing has dual filter stages one of which rotates and the holders features a compression spring tab based mech to hold them snug. I mean com'on!!

And I never usually write reviews on stuff because really, who has the time?

[85 mm Opening] I bought this matte box to be used with a minimalist rig I set up: a small mirrorless camera, zoom 16-35 on a Speedboster, microphone and a cage. Didn't want a box with flags, and that was another reason to choose this model. Considering the relatively low price, I didn't set my expectations too high. Well... What a surprise: I got a well thought, designed and built matte box. The two trays, one fixed and one rotating (the one closer to the front lens) allow the use of a polarizer and ND at the same time, or color correction filter and polarizer, or whatever the need is for a specific situation. The design of the box doubles a a lens shade, which so far as proved very efficient and accomodating wide-angle lenses. My 16-35 on this camera is equivalent to a 22-50, and it is well protected from stray lights or flare from side lighting. I also got step-up rings made by the same brand to accomodate 3 other lenses. They are relatively cheap, and with an external diameter of 83mm to clamp the matte box tightly. If flags are needed, there are threaded holes to mount them. I use glass filters of the same brand, which have the right thickness for the tray. Synthetic/polymer filter may be too thin to fit without 'curving'.

[270°] I recently bot this a couple of weeks ago. I used it on a shoot and it worked amazingly. For its price, it really helped with getting out shadows and getting rid of any unwanted light just like any other Matte box but simply for cheaper. Whilst it functions extremely well, something that is annoying about is that I had to buy a step up ring so that it could fit onto my camera which cost another $15 but it was completely worth it. I would recommend it to anyone who is currently in the first stages of learning how to rig out cameras as it really helps people learn about the usefulness of Matte Boxes

[85 mm Opening] I use this on my NX5u and it works perfectly with the widescreen aspect ratio. It is made of a soft, but rigid rubber. It's a GREAT alternative to the more expensive matte boxes.

[1.38 lb] the quality is just so, u know - plastic, i guess if i unintentionally drop the whole camera kit which the front will reach the ground first, it will be done lol, but it's still worthy for this price....

i didnt buy the 77-85mm adapter ring, but my sony 24-105g with 77mm front size seems to have a little bit vignette with this mattebox, i guess that sony 24-70za with 67mm front size fits this better

[85 mm Opening] don't expect the build quality of a titla or redrock. its small, cute and plastic. it even arrived missing a few screws. But i can tell you this. it works with the tokina 11-16 @ 11mm on a metabones speed booster and NO VIGNETTING. it was tested on a gh4 - no vignetting in 4k mode and slight vignetting in 1080p mode. so on a gh3 or gh4 in 1080p you would need to be at 13mm. Still I've yet to see another matte box that won't vignette at with that setup. all in all I'm impressed with the little guy.

[270°] I needed a Matt Box that I could use for both Video and Photography, to manage polarizers, grad filters etc. without having some massive apparatus hanging from the end of my camera. Well built and designed system that accommodates multiple mounting options i.e. direct lens attachment or rail system . For smaller DSLR camera systems, this is perfect. I also use this matt Box on my medium format camera system and it works great. If you need something a bit larger, Cavision also makes a 4x4 version. B&H has a wide variety of both 3x3 and 4x4 filters from Cavision, Lee etc. to fit either model.
