Q: 4. In an event of a drive failure. What can I use as a replacement?

Q: 9. Is this RAID a hardware or software based RAID?

[2-Year ] I purchased the Pegasus2 R6 to use with a new Mac Pro (late 2013) for editing 4K video. This drive comes preconfigured as a Raid 5 properly formatted for the Mac. After hooking up the Pegasus2 it automatically begins synchronizations which, for this 18TB array, required about 8 hours. The Raid 5 system is then ready for use. I found the expected high data transfer rates of about 720 MB/sec for this raid system. The Pegasus2 is very quiet in operation producing only a small amount of noise as the disks spin up. During writing to or reading from the array, the system is virtually inaudible. The Pegasus2 can be configured and controlled from the Promise Utility that comes installed on the array. This utility has an excellent interface that allows the user to address every aspect of array operation including the sophisticated power management features of The Pegasus2. The only issue that I had upon first using the Pegasus was that the hard drives were spinning down frequently when not being used for a few minutes. This caused a delay of about 10-15 seconds for the hard drives to spin up when they were addressed. I was able to correct this via commands provided by Promise and entered via Terminal commands directly to the CLI interface elf the Pegasus2. I have been told by Promise that the next version of the Promise Utility will allow this to be done completely from within the utility without the need to use a command line interface. I believe the Pegasus2 R6 is a perfect companion to the new Mac Pro for editing 4K video and other purposes where high data transfer speeds and large disk capacity are required.

[Extended] Owned this for a few months now (purchased it with my Mac Pro), and it is incredibly fast. I have it set up in a RAID 5 config, so I imagine it would be even a bit quicker at RAID 0. It was essentially plug and play...the setup wizard in the software created the RAID 5 config in seconds. Using blackmagic, it consistently tests at just over 1200 MB/s. I use it as my primary drive to house pictures and video...including my Lightroom library. All of my PS editing takes place on files located on this drive. So far, not a single hiccup when accessing this drive from either LR or PS. It clones once a night to a second P2 R6...that process is screaming fast. Even after a day of uploading 100 Gigs, this thing backs up in seconds. Incredible. It has performed every bit as well as I hoped and expected. It's expensive for the average hobbyist...but for a pro photographer who can afford it, the P2 R6 will help streamline your post processing efficiency.

[Extended] A serious amateur photographer shooting in RAW with a Nikon D4 I create a lot of pictures with file sizes ranging from 8 to 25megs each. Needless to say, they require a lot of storage space. The Pegasus2 R6 is an elegant solution. With a thunderbolt connection to my Mac Pro the speed is amazing-it's like working on your primary harddrive (the new Mac Pro has no harddrive bays). It is more expensive than other solutions, but the speed and reliability with built in RAID 5 technology makes it worth it to me. Set up was a snap--just plug it in and let it set itself up-in my case about 15 to 20 minutes.

[2-Year ] I've only used this for two Weeks now, but thus far this has been great. Mind you I was using a hard drive with USB 2 prior to this, so pretty much anything now would be better than what I had. This unit is pretty quiet, it does transfer data really quick, and the design looks clean. Easy to set up. It's actually enjoyable using my iTunes and iPhoto now since things pull up quickly, transfer quickly and can be searched quickly. Final cut seems to have no problems, although I'm only using standard HD content at this point. Haven't ventured into the 4k stuff yet. If you have the funds for something as simple as hard drive, this is a great product. They should however have added a longer thunderbolt cable... the one that comes with it is really short.

[2-Year ] I finally decided I had to upgrade to something for future-proofing my video editing workflow. The speeds are incredible, around 800mb/s read/write. The set up is very easy, it wakes from sleep very reliably. Comes very well packaged, and with a nice long thunderbolt cable. The fan is louder than my 2013 Mac Pro that is runs on, but it isn't distracting unless your room is dead silent. This beast will last me several years and I feel it's something I can trust.

[2-Year ] Promise is a good name as his device looks great and just implies confidence iand reliability right out of the box. Superbly well packed, my Pegasus was ready to go despite whatever it may hav experienced along its travels. A nice surprise was the inclusion of a thunderbolt cable which I was led to believe was not included. The device is painless to set up and immediately began its initialization process without a hitch. Promise really has a winner here with a quiet running solid platform for one's irreplaceable data. B&H gets special mention as a vendor, I was amazed first by the competitive price and then how they practically beamed this device to my overseas office. B&H's rapid order processing and shipping beats th competition hands down!

[2-Year ] I've been using the Pegasus drive for 4 years now. Only had one problem when a drive died but the company replaced and no data was lossed due to RAID structure. This drive is essentially silent.

[2-Year ] This item is used in a small Event Videography company. We had problems editing MultiCam. This Raid System solved all the problems! It's fast, east to connect, and is not software raid! I haven't had it fail, so I don't know how the process is for restoring things, hopefully, it's as easy as setup was!
