Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. So I am looking into buying my audio equipment and I am confused on what I should buy. Should I get the Zoom H5, Rode VideoMic Pro or should I buy an audio kit with boom pole? Or should I buy all three?

A: Dear Bryce. The zoom H5 is a recording device, or capture device. It's like a tape recorder, a nagra from the old days, except its digital. It has two little microphones on it which can come off. It has xlr inputs and 1/4 inch inputs for mics. On other words, you can attach anything to this device, like wireless receivers that take a signal from a Mic which you place on an actor, or, you could take a wireless signal from a Mic on the end of a boom pole. You can also run cable to the Mic and plug in directly to this device. So, for movie making this allows the sound person to be independent from the camera. All you need to do to make it easy to sync up later is use sticks at the beginning of a take, or the end. Do you follow me?.?.? Good.

Q: 2. does this have any analog outputs?

A: The Zoom H5 features a dedicated 1/8 stereo line out jack. The headphone output can also be used as an analog line output if necessary.

Q: 3. Will the cut out to this case work with the h5n?

A: The H5n is 66mm X 135mm X 42mm and the H6 is 77mm X 152mm X 47mm, so it would be a bit wobbly. You could probably add some foam to make it work

Q: 4. Does this kit come with wind blocker?

A: There is a foam rubber thingy included that works fine, but doesn't keep the wind out 100% in all cases. You can buy attachments that are better, but it has worked well for outdoor use for my podcast projects.

Q: 5. What are the dimension of that empty section? I have the boom mic attachment and I want to be sure it will fit.

A: Hi Nicholas, The dimensions of the accessory pocket is 8.5 x 2.75 x 2.5 .Thank you,Will

Q: 6. If I'm using a lav mic (via XLR input) should I choose Stereo or Multi to record? Which will give the best results?

A: Choose stereo mode.

Q: 7. When taking of the capsules, what is the best way to protect the contacts? Is there a product for this particular purpose? Thanks.

A: There is not. I recommend placing them in heavy-duty plastic zip lock (freezer)bags or photo lens pouches.

Q: 8. Can the back-up recording be used for any inputs or does it have to be only for the L/R mix?

A: The back-up recording is only for the L/R mix.

Q: 9. Can Zoom H5 use a mono mic and convert to stereo automatically, if both channels will be used as same, left and right?

A: The signal will not be converted to stereo but to two channel mono.

Q: 10. can I use my H4n recorder without batteries using an ac adapter?I purchased an AD-17A/d but not sure how to us it ?? Help pls

A: The H4n does not power from the USB connection. It requires a DC adapter, the AD-14.

[Black] The case has a very strong rigid exterior, a real hinge, secure latches, pressure vent, lid gasket and rubber grip handle. Interior has the depicted cutouts for the H5 and another for whatever you can fit into the area. The lid has an egg crate soft foam liner. This is a great case for the equipment that it is designed.

[Black] Rigid case and good protection for the Zoom H6 recoder with the mics. Fit well for all the components including the newer shotgun SSH-6. One little improvement is that the spared space for other accessories can be a little bit larger as accessories like cables (even thin cables using 3.5mm jack) and cards are quite space consuming. Perhaps the septums can be make thinner, or a larger case might be another option.

[Latch] I sold my zoom H4N to get this, and ever since it has made life so much easier! The battery indicator still gives inaccurate battery life, but at the end of its 2-ish hours of battery life, it will save the file it's currently recording before shutting down. Other things such as a dedicated line out port, ability to set either just one or both xlr ports to have phantom power, and physical dials for changing levels just makes recording that much less stressful. The ONLY thing that I find worse on this unit is the jog wheel on the side (for navigating the menu) which is a bit harder to press than the one on the h4n. The preamp is still not the best (it's a tad better than the h4n), but the zoom products have never been about getting the absolute best audio, but more so just getting an all in one recorder that's simple and versatile. I am so so happy with this unit.

[3.285 lb] I found this very user-friendly. Only used for one shoot thus far, with the Zoom EXH-6 Dual XLR/TRS unit (using 3 lapel and one shotgun) and worked a charm. Love the dual record at 20db less for when the levels topped out. Excellent little machine that will get a lot of use for broadcast TV and lesser productions.

[3.285 lb] Excellent case! Really well laid out and organized. I have the stereo shotgun mic, so I had to cut an additional inch into the insert. It would have been nice to have 4 aa battery slots as well, as there was definitely room.

[3.285 lb] I love the Zoom H5. I'm using it as an audio interface to record my voice with a dynamic mic (Sennheiser e835). I run the Zoom H5 directly into my computer on USB bus power (no batteries or SD card needed) and record to Camtasia. The H5 preamps are strong enough for the Sennheiser, even though it's a dynamic mic, and the results sound very good to my ear. Much lower noise than my Tascam DR-40 (which can't be used as an audio interface anyway, unlike the Zoom H5) and my voice sounds clearer and more natural with the Zoom H5.

[Latch] The Zoom H5 is a quality instrument, with many advanced capacities above the the 4n. We put it through the motions in the field at a horse farm; with boom feed in, and output right into the camera for back up. Then studio under controlled audio conditions. The Zoom H5 performed magnificently.

[Latch] This is a great hard case for the Zoom H5. It provides perfect fit and protection with room for accessories. Well worth the price.

[Black] I use this product as a direct replacement of my H4n which died after 5 years of use. I do sound recording of all sorts but most recently on set sound and boom micing. The H4n was great for this as I could strap it right to my boom pole and watch the meters while I boomed. Perfect for the one-man operation I am. A major problem I had was the fact that you couldn't run phantom power on my boom mic on channel one while using channel 2 to record my wireless lav. well you could but it would eat through a set of AA's in about 10 minutes. With the new H5, you can specifically set which channel has the phantom power on and now I have no problems with ridiculously fast battery drain. I also purchased the EXH-6 dual input capsule and can now mix and record 3 different wireless lavs and my boom mic into four separate tracks on one device. The new analog gain dials are a much needed addition as you can adjust gain on the fly with out the noisy clicking interfering with your clean audio sound. Also welcomed was the line out port which takes away the need for the -15db line attenuation cable I had to use previously. The physical size of this is just a bit smaller than the H4n but it has a nice rubbery grip all around it which feels great in hand.I won't go too much into sound quality. Both H5 and the H4n have great sound quality for the amateur/indy scene that most of us are using it for. If you want that perfect sound for your feature length then you should be investing in something by Sound Devices. If you cannot get quality, usable sound out of the H5 or H4n then you are doing something wrong.
