The Steinberg UR242 USB Audio Interface with Dual Mic Preampsfrom Steinberg UR242 USB Audio Interface with Dual Mic Preampsis a four input, two output USB 2.0 audio interface that features dual D-PRE microphone preamps coupled with 24-bit/192 kHz converters. The portable device is housed in an all-metal chassis and also functions as a MIDI interface, allowing for connection of external MIDI devices. With on-board DSP-based effects, a separate headphones jack and phantom power supply, the unit is perfect for mobile musicians, touring DJs, or the small personal writing studio.

Audio input is available via two Neutrik XLR/TRS combo inputs both with Peak LEDs, and global, switchable +48V phantom power enables the connection of condenser microphones. A Hi-Z switch on input one allows for direct recording of electric guitar or bass without the need of a DI box and a pair of rear panel line inputs allow for connecting electronic keyboards. Independent headphones and main output controls provide for adjusting the monitor and phones level individually.

The Class Compliant mode allows the interface to connect to an iPad (with an optional Apple Connection Kit) and using iOS music production apps like Steinberg's Cubasis makes for an elegant solution for sketching out ideas at home or on the go. Additionally, the interface is compatible with all major audio editing, mastering, and music production software that support ASIO, Core Audio, or WDM standards.

Also included with the UR242 is a copy of Cubase AI DAW software. Based on the same core technologies as the full Cubase DAW, the AI version offers an intuitive feature set for composing, recording, editing and mixing. Two TRS outputs, stable drivers and a USB 2.0 connection complement the feature set of this professional yet affordable device.

[Up to 192 kHz ] I've purchased a couple dozen over the past few years to help others record audio from their home office. Very simple to install, great sound and sturdy quality. Never had an issue with any of the units. 5

[1x USB-B] This works with DAW on the ipad, allowing 2 channels, either as 2 x mono channels, or 1 stereo channel. It's silent and runs on a 9 volt battery, great for quality recording in the field. I think the output to headphones (used when multitrack layering) is a little weak, but at least that reduces the spill over to the recording microphone. B&H have the best price I could find. 5

[Up to 192 kHz ] I really like this item, especially since my application for it is field and location recording and processing. Very portable and packs a bevy of features in a small case. Would like to have a firewire connection, but the USB works quite well. 5

[1x USB-B] Metric Halo is a bit of a niche, but it's well worth investing in. The preamps and conversion are so dead clean I don't think about anything other than microphones and placement; they are right on par with Merging Technologies' hardware at a much more approachable price point. The expandability to the EdgeCard slot is both part of their trademark future-proofing philosophy and also just really flexible to have in an interface. I have one unit fitted with a MADI card, and the other with ADAT so my options to combine with other interfaces is huge (right now I'm also using RME, which is secondary in preamp and A/D/A quality, in my opinion, to these boxes). Combining the two interfaces with the proprietary MHLink is a breeze for lightning fast setups, though I would like to see compatibility with a more universal network audio format like Dante or AES67. And as icing on the cake, these boxes are capable of becoming full digital consoles, so in the rare event that I have to run live sound, I can hook up some faders to my laptop and route things in MiOConsole to become a fully functional console as well as a rock solid recording interface. 5

[1x USB-B] Since this purchase was my first foray into digital recording, I spent time researching comparable products and the accompanying software packages. I decided on the Steinberg UR242 because of the reviews of their preamps, four separate inputs, and the price. B&H had the product in stock when other vendors did not, and they offered free next day shipping. I received the UR242 from B&H as promised. Installation of drivers and software went flawlessly, and the UR242 works as I expected. The only drawback is the learning curve to use the Cubase DAW software, but I believe that would be the same with almost any DAW. 5

[4.03 lb] For the money, this is a great little system. It plugs right into my Windows Vista computer with no issues, and Audacity recognized it without any problem at all. So far I have not had any complaints about the headphones being too quiet like I read in some reviews. But I use small in-ear earbuds, which could make a difference. I also bought this to use as a preamp with my Canon T2i. I have not tried out that functionality yet, but others have had good success. The phantom power works great using USB. Using the 9 volt battery power source added a slight bit of noise to the headphones. I have not tried recording while using the battery to see if it puts noise in the recording signal. I have been using it with an AKG c1000s microphone and have gotten very good results. The phantom power works great! I don't have the power adapter to use it as a standalone box, but having the three power sources available is very convenient. I especially like the USB power option as I primarily bought it for use with my computer. I have been using it as an external sound card and the sound is great out of it. It has stopped working a couple of times, and I had to unplug the USB cable and replug it. I'm not sure if that's my computer's fault or the box's fault. I am very happy with my purchase. It's all I need to basic recording and you really cannot beat the price or the power for the size. 5
