Whether you're tracking, mixing, or mastering, the CONVERT-8 will deliver powerful low end, articulate mids, and crystalline highs to every channel in your analog rig. Compatible with today's digital signals (including the ubiquitous ADAT format) the CONVERT-8 is ready to take on any mixing or monitoring job, from including stereo, 2.1, 5.1, and Dolby Atmos.

Dangerous has been building award-winning converters since 2002. Eager to develop a new DAC, Dangerous designed the CONVERT-8 from the ground up, utilizing an analog circuit designed by Chris Muth to deliver an open, articulate, and powerful sound. As a dedicated digital-to-analog converter, The CONVERT-8 has been optimized for the job of delivering stunning sound when mixing, stem mastering, and monitoring while tracking.

Renowned designer Chris Muth developed the audiophile-grade analog audio path for the CONVERT-8, meticulously fine-tuning the low-pass reconstruction filters that sit at the heart of any DAC. These filters are necessary for a DAC to function well, and extra care has been paid to them here.

Dangerous brought in digital guru Paul Messick to ensure the digital circuitry of the CONVERT-8 matches its finely tuned analog circuit. Paul refined the CONVERT's JetPLL ultralow-jitter clocking technology until it virtually eliminated jitter in the audio band and beyond, resulting in a clearer sound with less ear fatigue.

Many digital audio systems are synced to the best-sounding clock in the rack, and Dangerous hopes you'll choose the CONVERT-8 as the master clock for this reason. Simply use the Word Clock output, set the CONVERT-8 into Master mode from the front panel, and all the digital gear in your studio will benefit from The CONVERT's Jitter Elimination Technology.

The device sports industry-standard reference levels of -14, -16, and -18 dBFS, so you can recalibrate the CONVERT-8 with the push of a button. While many professional converters are only aligned at the factory, the CONVERT-8 lets you move flexibly between different reference levels on the fly. Anyone who's ever fumbled around behind a rack while a second person watches an external meter knows the special value of our front-panel calibration buttons, especially when there are eight channels with which to work.

Simply select Auto on the front panel and the CONVERT-8 will match its sample rate to the input signal. If you've ever started working at the wrong sample rate, you'll know why this feature can be so important. If you're swapping among different DAW sessions at different sample rates, the CONVERT-8 will follow your every move. You will have no more horrible scares in the form of horrendously distorted audio.

The CONVERT-8 lets you swap between multiple digital inputs on the fly from the front-panel buttons. No more digging into elaborate menus and system settings just to listen to iTunes, and no more rerouting software drivers just to hear a different output.

Because the CONVERT-8 can automatically lock to the incoming signal's sample rate, you don't need to even think about sample rates as you switch between inputs.

Four digital inputs include USB, AES/SPDIF, ADAT and Optical SPDIF (TOSLINK).

The rear panel of the converter features a D-Sub connector for analog outputs 1-8, a D-Sub connector for AES/SPDIF In and Thru 1-8, two ADAT Inputs, one WC input, one WC output, one optical S/PDIF input, a USB Type-B input, an RJ-45 remote in connector for the Monitor ST, and an RJ-45 remote thru connector for the Monitor ST.

Aside from giving you instant visual confirmation of your audio signal present across all eight channels, the metering indicator tells you when three consecutive samples have clipped, meaning you're a breath away from violating industry standards for CD reproduction, and are about to generate clipping distortion that would be audible in any digital file. Whether you want this clipping or not is up to you, of course, but at least you have a reliable indicator for clipping in the CONVERT-8.

Simply hook up the device to Dangerous Audio's award-winning MONITOR-ST/SR Remote to the rear panel ports, and you've got best-in-class desktop remote control over the CONVERT's front panel input selectors. Add the CONVERT-8 to your existing MONITOR-ST/SR rig for seamless integration of a quality DAC into your surround monitoring system.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. When I switch between layer sets in mimoLive the screen receiving the HDMI signal from the box blinks once or twice. Any I dead on why that is happening? Ps: This does not happen when I connect the HDMI from the screen directly to my Mac Pro.

A: The issue seems a little unclear. We are unable to reproduce the issue exactly as stated, but we suspect that there may be an EDID verification issue that may be causing the on and off blinking, although without a reproduction of the exact system, we cannot confirm for sure.

Q: 2. Can this upscale a 1080p30 NDI feed to 4k29.97fps out?

A: no it can not upscale resolution

Q: 3. What is the purpose of the bracket that ships with this device? How is it used? It is not obvious to me.

A: The L bracket is a mounting accessory that does not necessarily need to be used but is included to facilitate a specifically designed mounting option.

Q: 4. Does this unit have Image flip...I only see Mirror in the menu?

A: We have not seen an "image flip" option on this device.

[D/A Converter] Works perfectly out of the box.

[D/A Converter] This is a commercial sound bar, not a consumer product. It is built to provide superior sound quality to the ultra thin TVs that are becoming so ubiquitous. It's intended to be easy to use, easy to clean and provided long term maintenance free operation.
The sound quality is very good.
The build quality is good.
The installer features are appropriately minimal.
It's not overloaded with unnecessary features like bluetooth, wifi, etc.
It's EXACTY what I hoped it would be.
Highly recommended!

[D/A Converter] I bought this for a church. Our services are considered mission critical. Our live stream is very important to us, we don't want to have any down time or lack of quality. That is why we bought this product. We have used datavideo before and they have lasted us a long time.

A few things to know:
1. The power adaptor cable is not the most robust. It does have a screw on type connector, but it isn't the strongest. I accidentally dropped the unit and bent the power connected where it screws onto the device. I tried to bend it back in place and it broke off completely. Not cool. Luckily I have some other datavideo equipment around and was able to connect another power supply while a new one comes in the mail.

2. The device has male mini XLR connectors. If you're from the audio world (like me) you know this is backwards. You can easily find male mini XLR to female XLR. But it is harder to find the opposite. What it doesn't say on this website (BHphoto), is what's in the box. Funny, it doesn't even say on the datavideo website. When I ordered the product I ordered separate cables too. BUT, I didn't need to. In the box with the datavideo product they give you two mini XLR female to XLR female cables. How nice of them! But I wish I woulda known.

3. When you connect audio to this device it will show you nothing. No signs of life. It has audio meters, but nothing will appear. I was frustrated, knowing I was sending audio but not seeing the meter move. Finally I thought, let me connect the SDI cable. Still nothing. Then I turned on my switcher. Nothing. Then I turned on the camera and made sure I was sending a signal. When the device saw the signal it turned on and showed me audio levels.
Lesson: Send a signal over SDI so the device turns on and you can see and test audio meters.

A little more info would have been nice, but we got it working.

It is a sturdy little device. I hope it lasts me a long time.

[AC Input] This works great for my needs. Now I'm able to view SDI sources over the company network. I've connected this to the multiview out of a switcher in a remote room, so now I can see and control everything from anywhere on campus. I'm looking forward to seeing what else I can do with NDI to support more meetings at once. This one was for testing, so I'll be buying more of these soon.

[Rackmount] This is the perfect complement to a video switch that doesn't do audio. We recently went from Black Magic to Ross and needed an audio embedder and this one is perfect! It has meters built in for you can see how much audio you are inputting.

[Rackmount] I use this to pull a slide feed at livestreamed events. Overkill I know. But, like all Magewell, it's a very solid performer and will accept pretty much whatever you throw at it. The web interface is great. And full NDI not NDI-HX.

[1 RU] This is an incredible DAC, which also is a pre-amplifier with a headphone amplifier. The only thing I miss is the balance control, but that's OK. Easier better than my other two DACs.

[AC Input] I've used several NDI converters and this one works best with our Tricasters by far. No strange frame or field issues with 1080i signals. Well done Magewell!
