Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Do I need a backup replacement drive available in case one of the 4 drives fails so I can do a fast recovery to full operations? If so what would I order?

A: It is always best to have a spear drive just in case. This Buffalo DriveStation Quad 24TB 4-Bay USB 3.0 RAID Array (4 x 6TB) would be able to support the Buffalo 6TB 3.5" HDD found here ---- https://bhpho.to/3slXbMY .BH #BUOPHD60QH • MFR #OP-HD6.0QH

Q: 2. Does this only work with Mac devices ?

A: I can't confirm that because I bought it for MAC only.Call G technology Tech Support and they will tell you.

Q: 3. How much power does this consume? I don't want my electric bill to be too much higher.

A: The Buffalo 8TB LinkStation 220 Personal Cloud Storage NAS Drive (2 x 4TB) has a 48w max power draw.

Q: 4. Spec says it includes only one 4TB drive. How come it is sold as '8TB' NAS?

A: It looks like there is an error on the specs, the Buffalo 8TB LinkStation 220 Personal Cloud Storage NAS Drive BH #BULS220D0802 does include 2 x 4TB drives. I have submitted the web error to our web team and it should be updated as soon as possible. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Q: 5. If i'm running out of space in my 16tb 4 Bay, do i need a new DriveStation or i can just buy new drives? If have to be buffalo HDD or it can be of a different brand?

A: If you are running a RAID setup then all drives installed must be the same size, so you will not be able to upgrade single drives to a new capacity. Drives used with this enclosure can be other brands such as WD or Seagate, here is the official list of compatible models from Buffalo: https://bit.ly/3yxSnIP

Q: 6. Can this unit be connected to my 4TB G-Technology 4/4000 in order to expand my total storage to 8TB?

A: If your current drive has firewire it can be daisy chained. It will appear as a separate drive though.

Q: 7. Is the thunderbolt 1 or 2?

A: This is Thunderbolt 1...but it is very fast.

Q: 8. What is the limitation in the hardware that prohibits RAID 1 configurations in Disk Utility on the Mac?

A: The RAID hardware only allows for RAID 0 configuration. You do have the option to Erase the contents of the G-RAID partition in disk utility and reformat the drive to be used as a regular drive without any RAID.

Q: 9. can you reformat from raid 0 to raid 1?

A: This G-RAID can not be configured to RAID 1.

Q: 10. Is this unit with the ability to remove SATA drives?

A: No it does not have that capability.

[ 3.5" HDD ] I bought this unit after receiving help from an informative sales rep at B&H. His recommendation for my buying the Buffalo 8T (4 X 2T) TerraStation was based on my needs (I formerly had a WD 8T MyCloudHome NAS which is no longer supported) and on Buffalo's excellent help line which I can attest was outstanding in helping me. I have 4 Mac computers (3 Ventura and 1 Monterrey OS) on the NAS through a QNAP 2104 switch (also from B&H) and each one backs up correctly through Time Machine with my TerraStation using Raid 5 (Only 6T available with 1 drive designated as the emergency reserve). The unit is well built with a solid metal chassis. The unit runs cool. The 2.5 gig signal works correctly and firmware is updated without any difficulty. Setup was done through NasNavigator 2 software. All connections are through Cat 6 cables. I am very pleased with the results.

[ 3.5" HDD ] How excited can you get about a hard drive -- unless your NAS Raid array loses a drive. After calling Buffalo (manufacturer of the NAS unit), they gave me the specs for the replacement. I was very happy to see B&H among the online retailers that handle these, and extremely happy, but not surprised, that B&H had a great price. Some vendors matched B&H but none beat B&H. The NAS unit is back up and running great.

[ 3.5" HDD ] I bought this diskless and installed a pair of HGST NAS DeckStar 6TB HDD as a RAID1 on a Win7 network. Have contacted Buffalo support a couple of times and could not disagree more with the dissatisfaction expressed by other reviewers: I had fast, accurate and literate replies. I use this as a strictly LAN device, no Torrent, no iStuff.

A positive is the USB port to which a backup drive may be added and the system can be set to do an automatic back-up to this drive (I'm security conscious and have a 6TB WD Red NAS mounted there and back-up is done very night and reported to me by email).

A potential issue in event of a hardware failure is the Linux OS as Linux formatting differs from MS, but the USB back-up mitigates this as it is MS formatted. Also, while fast enough for my purposes, the processor's speed may not be up to another person's expectations.

All in all, coming up to four years now, I'm very satisfied.

[4 TB] I only installed it a short week ago. But my computer tech set it up for me and so far all goes smooth. I have another Buffalo as well and this one also runs well and smooth!
B&H is a respected company and I trust them since several decades. They are prompt in delivery and execute returns also very efficient.

[2.3 lb] These TeraStation raid arrays work well. Buffalo support is excellent. Email notifications are easy to setup.

[2.3 lb] The drive works great but I needed to speak with two people at Buffalo to get it to rebuild. Regardless, Buffalo will provide phone support even if the product is out of warranty. You can't beat that.

[4 TB] Bought as a shared backup solution after Drobos died and that company is going belly-up, with no support or products. TeraStation was easy to connect up and set up shares to multiple PCs. Robust with plenty of capacity.

[4 TB] 1. This drive is very easy to use as is---you can plug it in, download the apps, and use it that way.
2. If you're using Linux and/or don't want to download their apps, you can just connect to the device through a browser and set it up that route instead.
3. The device itself runs Linux, so if you want to tinker with it there are folks online who show you how to run Debian on it! (Just google debian on buffalo.) It's not very powerful (Arm7 with 256MB RAM) but if you want you can still use it for a bit more than just storage.

I'm really happy with my purchase.
