Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What drives are in this product?

A: There are 2 4T mirror drives in the product. You have storage capacity for 4T of data

Q: 2. Hi Guys, does this drive show up as 2 drives on the desktop ? My Pro Tools software requires two seperate drives, one for video and one for audio. Thanks

A: Hi, as mentioned above out of the box the G-RAID is set up as RAID 0 and will be seen as one drive. You can delete the RAID in Disk Utility, creating a JBOD, and then format each drive individually. (Call one Audio, and one Video.)If you are running El Capitan the drives will appear as individual drives in Disk Utility and you will be able to format each drive to create your Audio and Video drive.

Q: 3. Does this work with Windows 10 Pro?

A: The Buffalo 8TB DriveStation Axis Velocity USB 3.0 External Desktop Hard Drive comes preformatted for NTFS, making it compatible with Windows systems. A reformat is required to work for Macs.

Q: 4. How do you power off the drive?

A: I would suggest to safely remove the Buffalo 2TB DriveStation Axis Velocity USB 3.0 External Desktop Hard Drive by disconnecting it on the computer.

Q: 5. Is hardware RAID 1 supported on this?

A: As far as I can tell, the RAID controller on the drive does NOT allow you to switch between RAID 0 and RAID 1, but you can switch it to RAID 1 through the OS X disk utility. I hope this answers your question. Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Q: 6. Can this unit be connected to my 4TB G-Technology 4/4000 in order to expand my total storage to 8TB?

A: If your current drive has firewire it can be daisy chained. It will appear as a separate drive though.

Q: 7. What is the limitation in the hardware that prohibits RAID 1 configurations in Disk Utility on the Mac?

A: The RAID hardware only allows for RAID 0 configuration. You do have the option to Erase the contents of the G-RAID partition in disk utility and reformat the drive to be used as a regular drive without any RAID.

Q: 8. Is this unit with the ability to remove SATA drives?

A: No it does not have that capability.

Q: 9. Spec says it includes only one 4TB drive. How come it is sold as '8TB' NAS?

A: It looks like there is an error on the specs, the Buffalo 8TB LinkStation 220 Personal Cloud Storage NAS Drive BH #BULS220D0802 does include 2 x 4TB drives. I have submitted the web error to our web team and it should be updated as soon as possible. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Q: 10. Is the thunderbolt 1 or 2?

A: This is Thunderbolt 1...but it is very fast.

[1.75 lb] 1. This drive is very easy to use as is---you can plug it in, download the apps, and use it that way.
2. If you're using Linux and/or don't want to download their apps, you can just connect to the device through a browser and set it up that route instead.
3. The device itself runs Linux, so if you want to tinker with it there are folks online who show you how to run Debian on it! (Just google debian on buffalo.) It's not very powerful (Arm7 with 256MB RAM) but if you want you can still use it for a bit more than just storage.

I'm really happy with my purchase.

[1.75 lb] I must admit if you are not technically knowledgeable about how networking works then this is not for you! Easy setup means sometimes easy to hack! Basically Buffalo NAS is targeted for Business class. I have seen most of the businesses running are using Buffalo products for backup specifically TerraStation model which is similar setup to LinkStation but with more robust features. Once you understand the system then you will never look for another NAS. I always trusted this brand! Hope this will give some clarifications and helps people who are looking to install in their networks.

[1.75 lb] The drive works great but I needed to speak with two people at Buffalo to get it to rebuild. Regardless, Buffalo will provide phone support even if the product is out of warranty. You can't beat that.

[1.75 lb] After studying the field, we ordered the Buffalo ls120. This comes configured with 2 drives as raid 1. It was particularly important to insure from data loss. Storage space was secondary. NAS of this quality are usually more expensive (and with more storage than I need). Any device on my LAN can access and share the data without having an attached PC necessary all the time. Other configs are optional, but with raid1, in the unlikely event of one drive failure, the data is still safe and continuously available on the other one. Buffalo would rush a replacement of the failed drive quickly with no interruption.

[1.75 lb] I only installed it a short week ago. But my computer tech set it up for me and so far all goes smooth. I have another Buffalo as well and this one also runs well and smooth!
B&H is a respected company and I trust them since several decades. They are prompt in delivery and execute returns also very efficient.
