Rollei Retro 80S Black & White 35mm Film, 36 Exposuresis a slow-speed panchromatic black and white negative film with extended near-infrared sensitivity to 775nm. This additional red sensitivity helps to cut through haze or fog and also smooth skin tones and blemishes, making it ideal for portraiture. It has a nominal sensitivity of ISO 80/20° and is characterized by a fine grain structure and broad tonal range. It is coated onto a transparent polyester base, with anti-static coatings, that makes it well-suited to scanning applications.

This item is one 36-exposure roll of 35mm film.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. expired date?

A: This film is fresh dated, at least a year.

Q: 2. Is there still a defect with the 120 format? There has been an issue with a defective backing

A: The defective paper issue with the Rollei Retro 80S Black and White Negative Film (120 Roll Film) was resolved sometime in 2021. Our current films are not showing any paper defect.

Q: 3. Can this film be developed in Ilford ILFOTEC DD-X Developer? What is the developing time using the Ilford ILFOTEC DD-X Developer? any recomendations?

A: Hi Ali,So far I have only used Kodak D-76 (1:1), I have been delighted with my results..I don't know if ILFOTEC DD-X compares with D-76.Good Luck enjoy the Film!!!

Q: 4. What are the differences between this, the Retro 400s, vs the RPX 400?

A: The main difference is, Rollei Retro 400S Black and White Negative Film (35mm Roll Film, 36 Exposures) is more sensitive to Infrared light. But in most uses you will not see the difference.

Q: 5. Does it work for an 80A Polaroid

A: Unfortunately the film for the Polaroid 80A was discontinued by the manufacturer in 1980. There are no more films made that are compatible with your camera.

Q: 6. What is the best filter to use to get full IR results?

A: Kodak used to make a great film called Kodak High Speed Infrared. Using a 25 A red or 87 infra red filter you could get beautiful white leaves on the trees without setting the ISO that low. The Rollei is nice film, but it's not high speed. A #87 filter will give you the most infrared look, but the ISO for the meter readings should be around 25, if not lower. Shoot a test roll and develop it and make sure to bracket at least a full stop in either direction.

Q: 7. Is this batch still made in the Belgium factory or some where else?

A: Country of origin is still Germany, has not changed for many years.

Q: 8. Will this work in a Rollei 16s minature 8mm camera?

A: This film is for medium format cameras that use 120 (6cm) film. It will not fit a miniature 8mm.

Q: 9. Will this film be fogged by cameras which detect the DX coding using IR sensor (I have a canon A2)?

A: I do not believe the film will be fogged by DX sensor. I have used infraed in my Canon Elan 7 body with no issues. The one concern I did have was light intrusion through the rear of the camera at the film type window on the door. I addressed that concern by taping over the window. Also, load the film in low light. Do your research, the film requires certain filters (Red 25a) as I recall for strong IR response. The films reveals IR properties better at certain time of the year and day when UV light is stronger. Foliage reflects UV better when chlorophyll content is higher as I recall. Plenty of info on best way to shoot IR film online. Good luck!

Q: 10. retro 80 suitable for reversal processing?

A: I have not reverse-processed this film, but the process can be done with virtually any traditional B&W emulsion. I would think that this film would be a very good choice for reversal processing as it is fine grained, has a clear base, and tends to have relatively high contrast.

[100.0 µm] Beautiful contrast, fine grain

[100.0 µm] I've just processed my first roll of Retro 80S in Rollei Supergrain developer and am very pleased with the result. The combination yields very rich blacks, subtle mid-tones and brilliant highlights. Of course it is a pretty slow film so not a great selection for low light or fast moving subjects but for appropriate lighting it's a great film. Try a roll, you won't be disappointed with the result.

[Polyester] I decided to try this film based on nothing more than a handful of very positive reviews (and perhaps the Rollei reputation), and it was a risk worth taking. The film is sharp and contrasty with very fine grain. At ASA 80 it's not an all-purpose film, but for very specific applications (architecture on a reasonably sunny day, for example) I'm not sure there's anything better. Give it a try.

[Polyester] This stuff is great. Worked well in my 70 year old Ihagee Exa. Developed in D76 following the instructions from Rollei and the negatives are perfect. High contrast, really sharp. Enhances contrast in cloudy skies, makes them very dramatic. Film base is nearly transparent after development.

[Polyester] Not made to the same standards of Ilford or Kodak of old, but perfectly acceptable quality these days. Well-protected for transport.
This is a good emulsion that lends itself well to experimentation in filtration and development. Try some IR or deep red filters, or use it without filtration. Try developing in Dektol or D-19 for higher contrast. I like HC-110(B) or Rodinal as all-around developers, both work well with this film.

[80] I've been using this film for several years by now. I've decided to make it the only film I'll use. It's less expensive than FP4 or Agfa APX 100. It yields finer grain than it's box rating would lead you to expect. I love the contrast it gives me, which I assume results for an s-shaped characteristic curve. Better results when cropping and more dramatic photos. This seems to make it less forgiving of slight errors in exposure. It has a transparent base and lays flat on a scanner. I use Rodinal (1:50)@50 ISO.

[35mm] I developed this in Xtol 1+2 (8 minutes at 75 F) and found that it has a high mid-tone contrast with low contrast in the shadows and highlights. The speed worked out to ISO 64 based on middle gray (not the normal FB+fog plus 0.1 density speed point). This film can be used creatively wherever you don't mind losing some shadow detail. You will have fun discovering when that works for you.

[36] This is quality film at a good price, making it a great value. I buy from B&H regularly & even enjoy their commercial.

[1] One of my most favorite black-and-white films! Captures the essence of architecture and urban landscapes with remarkable clarity. I achieve consistently stable outcomes with this film. The processed negatives come out absolutely clean, with stunning sharpness that, for me, makes them ideal for further digital processing. Fine details and contrast!
