This additional red sensitivity helps to cut through haze or fog and also smooth skin tones and blemishes, making it ideal for portraiture. It has a nominal sensitivity of ISO 80/20° and is characterized by a fine grain structure and broad tonal range. It is coated onto a transparent polyester base, with anti-static coatings, that makes it well-suited to scanning applications.

This item is one 36-exposure roll of 35mm film.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. retro 80 suitable for reversal processing?

A: I have not reverse-processed this film, but the process can be done with virtually any traditional B&W emulsion. I would think that this film would be a very good choice for reversal processing as it is fine grained, has a clear base, and tends to have relatively high contrast.

Q: 2. If you used an 850 IR filter with this film would you still get an image or would it just block all light?

A: Rollei infrared is only sensitive up to 850nm. So anything that's blocks 850nm and down prob won't produce an image. I use a Hoya 72 filter with this film.

Q: 3. Would Ilford Simplicity kit work for this film? https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1448926-REG/ilford_1178858_simplicity_film_kit.html What is development time/temperature? Thank you

A: The Ilford SIMPLICITY Starter Pack can be used to develop Rollei Retro 80S Black and White Negative Film (35mm Roll Film, 36 Exposures). This should have a developing time with ILFOSOL 3 (1+9 dilution) of 5 minutes at 68°F / 20°C.

Q: 4. Does it work for an 80A Polaroid

A: Unfortunately the film for the Polaroid 80A was discontinued by the manufacturer in 1980. There are no more films made that are compatible with your camera.

Q: 5. Is there still a defect with the 120 format? There has been an issue with a defective backing

A: The defective paper issue with the Rollei Retro 80S Black and White Negative Film (120 Roll Film) was resolved sometime in 2021. Our current films are not showing any paper defect.

Q: 6. I want to use Rollei Infrared 400 in a Pentax K1000. What l want to do is use it in a dark room with no light and l have a IR light attached to the camera. Do l need a filter ?

A: I wouldn't think you would need one since the IR filter is required to absorb visible light, which shouldn't exist in a dark room.

Q: 7. Will this film be fogged by cameras which detect the DX coding using IR sensor (I have a canon A2)?

A: I do not believe the film will be fogged by DX sensor. I have used infraed in my Canon Elan 7 body with no issues. The one concern I did have was light intrusion through the rear of the camera at the film type window on the door. I addressed that concern by taping over the window. Also, load the film in low light. Do your research, the film requires certain filters (Red 25a) as I recall for strong IR response. The films reveals IR properties better at certain time of the year and day when UV light is stronger. Foliage reflects UV better when chlorophyll content is higher as I recall. Plenty of info on best way to shoot IR film online. Good luck!

Q: 8. My camera does not have ISO 80 as an option. I'm shooting with the Minolta XE-5 which goes right from 60 to 125. Whats an ideal way to handle this situation if I want to experiment with this film?

A: Your camera does have the option of selecting ISO 80. You are looking at the shutter-speed dial. Consult your user's manual to find how to select the ISO.

Q: 9. Has anyone out there worked with the old (discontinued) Kodak B&W infra red? I used to shoot it a lot back in the day and am wondering how this compares to it?

A: The Rollei Infrared 400 Black and White Negative Film (35mm Roll Film, 36 Exposures) is different than the old Kodak IR film. Unlike IR film the films today like this are sensitive to IR light. So, they do not have the full effect like IR film did. but it does give a good look like IR film.

Q: 10. how does one get the the whited out foliage appearance and darkened sky appearance on this film? is it random? or is it more of an exposure trick?

A: You need an IR720 filter . That filter helps this film pick up that infrared wave length of light that will give the effects you asked about.

[35mm] The combination of the HIGH contrast and clear base give this film a very old school look. Gotta nail the exposure or you'll get litho film looking results. I like the look but I can definitely see how some shooters may not appreciate it. Try it to make sure it fits your style before you go buy 100' ;)

[1] I developed this in Xtol 1+2 (8 minutes at 75 F) and found that it has a high mid-tone contrast with low contrast in the shadows and highlights. The speed worked out to ISO 64 based on middle gray (not the normal FB+fog plus 0.1 density speed point). This film can be used creatively wherever you don't mind losing some shadow detail. You will have fun discovering when that works for you.

[100.0 µm] One of my most favorite black-and-white films! Captures the essence of architecture and urban landscapes with remarkable clarity. I achieve consistently stable outcomes with this film. The processed negatives come out absolutely clean, with stunning sharpness that, for me, makes them ideal for further digital processing. Fine details and contrast!

[Polyester] I just really like the tones and behavior of this emulsion. When it disappeared I was so excited to see it return to this store. It may be a uncommon speed but it was perfect for landscape photography.

[35mm] I've just processed my first roll of Retro 80S in Rollei Supergrain developer and am very pleased with the result. The combination yields very rich blacks, subtle mid-tones and brilliant highlights. Of course it is a pretty slow film so not a great selection for low light or fast moving subjects but for appropriate lighting it's a great film. Try a roll, you won't be disappointed with the result.

[0.075 lb] I shot this film in both bright sunlight and dull cloudy days and it provided the results I was hoping for. Contrast is high, but not harsh. Fine details were excellent. Overall, this film provided excellent results with fine grain.

[0.075 lb] The super-clear base makes it perfect for reversal slides. For print making I have found it challenging to get even exposures in the enlarger because the contrast is so high. Even so, it has very soft grain while being high-contrast. Could probably have good results if you account for this and use the film's characteristics to your benefit.

[0.075 lb] Scans great, punchy contrast and pushes fine the images were shot at 160iso and developed in hc110 for 6min rotary at 70 degrees. Bought a bulk roll will definitely be shooting this regularly

[100.0 µm] I decided to try this film based on nothing more than a handful of very positive reviews (and perhaps the Rollei reputation), and it was a risk worth taking. The film is sharp and contrasty with very fine grain. At ASA 80 it's not an all-purpose film, but for very specific applications (architecture on a reasonably sunny day, for example) I'm not sure there's anything better. Give it a try.
