The Royer Labs R-122 MKII Ribbon Microphone Matched Pairfrom Royer Labs R-122 MKII Ribbon Microphone Matched Pairare a matched pair of figure-8, electrodynamic ribbon microphones. The R-122 MKII Live is a road-optimized version of the phantom powered R-122 MKII ribbon microphone. The R-122 MKII Live's output is on par with phantom powered condenser mics, allowing for long cable runs and the occasional sub-par mic preamps, and its switchable -15 dB pad and bass-cut filter deliver flexibility on electric guitars, drum overheads, trumpets, and other live instruments. It produces warm and realistic sounds that ribbon mics deliver. Along with its smooth, natural response, the R-122 MKII Live helps to eliminate the shrill high-end often encountered with live guitars, brass, and drum cymbals. With the faders up, the peaky highs are gone.

The R-122 MKII's switchable -15 dB pad is positioned before the microphone's electronics and, when engaged, eliminates headroom-related distortion or preamplifier overload on even the loudest sound sources.

When switched in, the R-122 MKII's bass cut starts filtering at 100 Hz, 6 dB per octave, effectively reducing the mic's bass buildup due to proximity effect. This smooth filter is useful on close-miked electric guitars when less bottom end is desired.

The microphone utilizes a toroidal transformer that delivers a faster transient response then traditional ribbons. This produces a tighter, more focused low end and a sense of more open highs than with traditional ribbons, making it great for drum overheads and percussion. The R-122 MKII Live can be used on long cable runs with minimal RF interference and signal loss, and the ribbon element cannot be damaged by phantom power, miswired cables or electrical glitches.

The R-122 MKII Live features a red logo. The ribbon element thickness is increased from 2.5-microns to 4-microns, giving the microphone greater durability and a slightly reduced high-end response. Highs are often rolled off in live performances, but due to the R-122 MKII Live's smooth high frequency response, it needs less equalizing than is usually required with condenser and dynamic microphones.

The R-122 MKII Live's pickup pattern is figure-8, which can be used to control stage bleed with great effect. Side rejection in the null points is strong, simply position the mics "ears" to face the offending instrument(s) and bleed will be mostly eliminated. The top and bottom of the microphone are also null points. If monitors are in close proximity to the rear side of the microphone, a positioning adjustment can place the monitors output in the mic's null, isolating the monitor from the mic's pickup areas.

The R-122 MKII Live's proprietary offset ribbon transducer positions the ribbon element closer to the front (logo) side of the microphone. This arrangement gives the ribbon more room to move within the prime magnetic field while maintaining full frequency response on high SPL applications.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. do these work on leica m10 with leica sf24d flash?

A: Yes. It will work as a manual (non-TTL) flash using this system.

Q: 2. Can the DSC Labs CamBelles be used with other color spaces than Rec.709, (P3 and Rec.2020) for HDR tests?

A: This color reference test chart will support accurate color management for REC 709 color gamut standard. Please note there is no way to make a chart that supports P3 or REC 2020 today using reflective charts. All DSC labs charts however will allow you to work in P3 or Rec 2020... HDR as well.

Q: 3. Will this possibly work with a pocket Wizard Power ST4?

A: No, this Skyport USB RX MK II Transceiver cannot work with the Pocket Wizard Power ST4.

Q: 4. Can this receiver be triggered by the trigger of the LightPix Labs FlashQ Q20II?

A: With the FlashQ Transmitter affixed to the bottom of the Q20II flash, you can trigger this receiver.

Q: 5. Are there flat feet available for this item instead of casters?

A: No, the table only has casters made for it.This link is the instructions on how to put it together, http://bit.ly/1Om6EJz. You might be able to use it without the casters but it is designed to use them.

Q: 6. Will the Fuji version of this also work on a Sony? Will it do ttl or just manual? Is there a way to make it compatible to do ttl compensation in a Sony as well?

A: The LightPix Labs FlashQ x20 with Transmitter for FUJIFILM will only work in manual mode on Sony cameras, it is not possible to make it support Sony TTL due to the hardware.

Q: 7. Will this work as a trigger on my Sony A7iii using my HVL-F43M off camera?

A: BH #LIFQRECT2BLK is only a receiver. You would also need the transmitter. It is also a manual only system so you would not get the full range of features of the flash.

Q: 8. will this work with leica cl?

A: Unfortunately LightPix Labs FlashQ x20 with Transmitter for Sony is not compatible with the Leica CL.

Q: 9. Is there manual mode?

A: Yes. For instructions, please see the quick start guide on our overview page or the manual included in the box.

Q: 10. Does the fuji ver. works with Leica M cameras?

A: While we do not carry the Fujifilm version of the LightPix Labs FlashQ x20 with Transmitter for Sony in our inventory, while the flash may it onto a Leica M hot shoe, do note that you would not have TTL automatic flash exposure output and you would need to set the flash output manually.

[Phantom Power] I was so impressed by the Golden Age pre-73 and the pre-73 mark II that I felt compelled to try one of their microphones. This mic always comes up in forums and I have to say it delivers the goods. It is currently deployed as a center overhead on my drum kit and it is punchy and full sounding with a nice warm vintage flavor. At this price you should be buying two! Make sure you have a good boom stand because this mic is hefty!

[Side Address] The one and only... You probably already know that!

[Side Address] This guy is my first foray into ribbons, and so far I've used it with a Cloudlifter CL-1 and an old Mbox2. It sounds great, especially for the price. It's smooth and warm on female vocals and much more flattering/forgiving than the CAD 179 I usually use. (FYI, when I recorded my acoustic jumbo guitar, it was pretty boomy on the lows, but I haven't tried it with other body styles. Another reviewer had good results recording acoustic, so my big assed EJ-200 might just be too much for it.) I'd recommend picking up another xlr cord while you're here if you don't have any extras at home. I had trouble fitting the cord that comes already plugged into this mic into my CL-1, but I easily swapped it out (the cord comes secured onto the mic, so it's just a tiny bit more difficult than simply unplugging the cord and plugging in another - you'll need a small screwdriver).

[Solid-State] Seems to work quite well. Obvious use is for vocals. Not much more to say, other than that it looks nice too. The clip-on part is designed to fit on a fairly narrow mic stand pole, evidently. It doesn't quite work with my set up, but I managed to affix it to something.

[Low Cut/HPF] The only way to filter, especially with ribbon mikes. There are others that work well enough, but they seem to block the sound a bit... coming out of them you won't feel a breeze, but the PS101 emits this gentle breeze which is just enough to convey the sound waves unimpeded.
Always use a pop filter of some kind, and the metal ones last and are washable, but this one is the best.

[48 V] Its used to block pops coming through the mic and this does a great job at doing that. I get clear sound no pops what so ever

[Figure-8] B and H had my order ready in no time, and this is a great microphone! Using it for woodwinds and guitar so far and it has a beautiful mid range without too much harsh high end.

[Phantom Power] I have used this mic for the first time for an on-location recording of a choir, band, and orchestra. I can verfy all the claims that Royer Labs make for this product. The sound is gorgeous - silky smooth and so accurate. The stereo image and location of individual instruments therein is absolutely uncanny! It is every bit as good as any recording I have ever heard from major studios. The crossed figure eight pickup pattern gives great ambience to the sound - you just have to hope your audience is quiet if you are recording a live performance (an acceptable tradeoff, I think). And, of course, being a ribbon microphone, you have to be sooo careful with it. It comes in a double case with a very well designed isolation mount included, a 25' 5 conductor cable, and a suitable 5 pin to two 3 pin XLR adaptor - all you need.

[Low Cut/HPF] The re-birth of the ribbon microphone. I had been looking for one for the last six months and was so happy to finally find it at B&H. Thank you!
