A prime portrait-length lens characterized by its complex Planar construction, the Nikon F-mount ZEISS Milvus 85mm f/1.4 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon Ffrom ZEISS Milvus 85mm f/1.4 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon Ffeatures a fast maximum aperture along with a unique spherical design to produce especially smooth bokeh for selective focus applications. The Planar design incorporates seven anomalous partial dispersion glass elements to nearly eliminate chromatic aberrations and other distortions for clean, well-corrected imagery. A floating elements system is used, too, for consistent performance throughout the focusing range, in order to achieve even sharpness and clarity. An enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has also been applied to significantly reduce ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

The manual focus design is complemented by a rubberized focus ring for fine-tuned, precise control over your focus position. Additionally, Milvus-series lenses also feature an equally aesthetic and durable frosted, anodized metal lens-barrel surface along with a weather-sealed construction to protect against dust and moisture.

Short telephoto prime is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it provides a 127.5mm equivalent focal length.

Impressively bright f/1.4 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.

Planar optical design affords high sharpness and consistent performance throughout the focusing range to suit photographing at a wide range of imaging scales.

Seven anomalous partial dispersion elements are used to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and color fidelity.

Unique spherical design produces an especially smooth quality of bokeh to benefit portraiture and selective focus applications.

ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections and provide greater contrast and color fidelity.

Floating elements system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range, from 2.6' to infinity.

Manual focus design is benefitted by focusing and depth of field scales along with hard stops at both infinity and minimum focusing positions.

Manual aperture ring has clicked indicators throughout aperture range. Using the included De-Click Tool, this ring can be mechanically 'de-clicked' for smooth, silent rotation throughout the aperture range; making it ideal for video applications.

Weather-resistant construction includes internal seals to guard against dust and moisture as well as a blue sealing ring at the lens mount to protect the lens-camera interface.

All-metal lens barrel has a frosted, anodized surface along with a rubberized focusing ring for both durability and improved tactile control.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Do the Zeiss Milvus lenses come with lens gears?

A: The ZEISS Milvus 50mm f/1.4 ZE Lens for Canon EF does not include lens gears. This is what is included: Front and Rear Lens Caps Lens Hood Limited 2-Year Warranty

Q: 2. Where is this lens made?

A: The Zeiss Milvus 85mm f/1.4 ZE is made in Japan.

Q: 3. would this lens have focus conformation on the canon 5DS?

A: Confirmation. Yes. The focus points will light up when in focus.

Q: 4. How does this lens differ from the older Planar 85mm lens?

A: This lens differs in all aspects, except the core characteristics (85mm focal lefth and 1.4 aperture). Unlike some other Milvus lenses (I'm thinking about the 50mm for example), this has been built from the ground-up and bears no resemblance to any other lens they have made. The 85 has more similarities with the Otus than the older Planar. In a nutshell: this lens is much much MUCH sharper than the older Planar. It also manages CA better. It however has slightly more vignetting.

Q: 5. Whats the difference with the Zeiss 50mm f/2.0 Makro-Planar ZE Macro?

A: The Milvus 1.4/50 ZE is designed for general purpose still and video applications, whereas the Milvus 2/50M ZE is optimized for close-focus applications and offers macro magnifications of 1:2 (half life size).

Q: 6. Does it have weather sealing gasket?

A: Yes it does according to the information provided by Zeiss.

Q: 7. This one (Milvus) or that one (Loxia) for Sony A7R II.

A: I purchased for the Canon 5DRs

Q: 8. is this len manual focus?

A: The ZEISS ZF.2 lenses are manual focus, but do provide communication with the camera body via a CPU. This allows for the use of various functions, including the exposure meter, various exposure modes, transfer of meta data and focus confirmation. Q: 9. if i were to use the manual focus Zeiss Milvus on a 5D Mark iv, are there replacement focussing screens for the camera?

A: Unfortunately 5d mark iv focusing screen is not user replaceable and we do not carry any options for that camera.

Q: 10. Does the Milvus provide focus assist in the view finder?

A: Yes, with the shutter pressed half way and as the lens is focused, the focus assist in the camera viewfinder is utilized.

[29°] One of the best 50mm out there. Outstanding bokeh, beautiful colors, extremely well made. I sometimes miss the AF. This Zeiss is a nice to have lens, but there are others out there that are *almost* as good, for a much lower price.

[4.05 lb] Some context: I am coming from 10+ years of shooting Canon's L-lenses on the EOS mount, and Leica M lenses. I needed a fast 85mm lens for my 60MP Sony A7R IV as well as my Nikon film cameras. I used to have Canon's take on this, their 85mm f/1.2L and was looking for something similar in the F-mount.

This lens is shocking. First, it is the heaviest prime lens I have ever owned. It is much bigger and heavier than Nikon's own 105mm or 85mm AI-S primes. Definitely not an every day lens, more like a tool for special occasions. I was prepared for this, and I was ready to sacrifice portability to get that f/1.4 aperture. It is so heavy and bulky that my Nikon F3 can't even sit straight with this lens mounted. The barrel is so wide, it tilts on one side.

Second, I was absolutely blown away by its performance at f/1.4. None of Canon L-lenses I've ever owned could deliver this at this aperture, or even smaller. At f/1.4 this Zeiss outperforms a pair of Leica Summiluxes I have.

And finally, the build quality is out of this world. I prefer this lens construction to everything else I own, including not only premium 35mm choices mentioned above, but also Hasselblad/Zeiss lenses for the V-mount.

Basically, the weight and bulk are the only weaknesses this lens has, even it's price is appropriate given its performance.

[11.6 x 7 x 5.5"] Love this lens, focuses great on my 5D3, buttery smooth focus ring. I just hold the back focus down and turn the ring till I hear the beep telling me I'm focused and snap pic, every shop perfectly in focus.

The build is great and sturdy, it's not a light lens but not heavy, and feels very balanced in my hand. The colors and contrast are 10/10. At F/7 this lens is sharp as a tac.

Would I recommend this lens? Oh yeah, get it you will love it. I use this more than my 70-200 IS2 now.

[f/16] Beautiful lens, can't say anything bad about it.

[f/16] Status: Enthusiast. I'am using this lens on a Nikon D850 and shoot raw. Also use Zeiss Milvus 100mm and the Zeiss Milvus 135mm and they are also in their own right spectacular lens. But the Zeiss Milvus 85mm is in a class of it's own. Incredibly sharp. Please do not let the lack of auto focus be a deterrent. I have grown to like the manual focus better than auto focus, the precision and the length of the focus throw is so precise you are on target a great percent of the time. Please note these lenses are in my opinion for slow and deliberate photography which is most pleasing for me. I use them with a tripod. The color rendition is nothing short of phenomenal. The samples I have provided are from the Zeiss Milvus 85mm /1.4 for Nikon mount and have had no post processing color adjustments. Please treat yourself to a Zeiss Milvus they are all special.

[f/16] This lens is better optically than my Leica 50mm Summilux ASPH. Absolutely perfect wide-open on a 60mp sensor on my Sony camera (I use an F-mount adapter).

However, this lens is nearly 3x heavier and bigger than the Summilux, which severely limits its usefulness. I see it as an optically perfect lens for low-light situations and shoot it exclusively in f/1.4 to f/2 range. If that's your case, you'll love it!

[4.05 lb] Throughout my photography career, I owned many 85mm primes. I shot with Canon, Nikon and Sigma upper echelon counterparts but this lens is a class above. If you can deal with manual focus, Milvus will reward you with truly astonishing results. The resolution is simply outstanding, when paired with Canon R5, the lens easily resolves its 45mp output. Beside the fact the lens is extremely sharp, the true quality lies in a total absence of CA and nasty artifacts. Those who love Zeiss looks, the signature micro-contrast and beautiful color rendering qualities won't disappoint. Milvus is not cheap but I wouldn't say overpriced, afterall, it is a professional grade optic. OMO, it will likely outlast many AF 85mm primes simply because the build quality and design is on the next level.

[4.05 lb] I am not one to evaluate the technical properties of this lens, but only whether or not it performs well for me and whether it is worth the price. I have long been using an 85mm f/2.0 Ai Nikkor lens that I bought new in 1977 for my F2 camera. I do like this Zeiss much better, and It works well on my Z mount cameras with the XTZII adapter. I am pleased with it and glad I purchased it (on sale at B&H). My only con is that it weighs almost twice as much as my camera (Zf, Z7ii). Not something you would want to carry around all day, but I mostly use it on a tripod. (And I can also use it on my Nikon F mount film cameras, F, F2, F3.)

[f/1.4] The Milvus 85mm 1.4 exceeded my high expectations. Sharpness is excellent and the separation between subject and the background is the best I've seen in a lens. Fringing is a non-issue, which is something I really appreciate. I've imagined some of my pictures made with the Milvus having been done on an older lens like the Nikon 85/1.4D and I know the contrast edges would be glowing. With the Milvus, what you see in front of you is what you get in the picture.

It's a heavy lens and challenging to focus while on the move, but if you're okay with those drawbacks, you stand to get one of the best image-making tools available.
