A standard, bright wide-angle prime for the Canon EF mount, the ZEISS Milvus 35mm f/2 Lens for Canon EFfrom ZEISS Milvus 35mm f/2 Lens for Canon EFutilizes the Distagon optical design, with one anomalous partial dispersion element, to produce well-controlled imagery with reduced chromatic aberrations and distortions. A floating elements system is also used to achieve consistent performance, even sharpness, and clarity throughout the focusing range. An enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has also been applied to markedly reduce lens flare and ghosting for working in trying lighting conditions.

The manual focus design is complemented by a rubberized focus ring for fine-tuned, precise control over your focus position. Additionally, Milvus-series lenses also feature an equally aesthetic and durable frosted, anodized metal lens-barrel surface along with a weather-sealed construction to protect against dust and moisture

Wide-angle prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 56mm equivalent focal length.

Bright f/2 aperture helps to achieve a more compact, portable form factor while also remaining versatile for use in a variety of lighting conditions.

Distagon optical concept affords high sharpness, well-corrected image quality from edge-to-edge, and very low field curvature.

One anomalous partial dispersion element is used to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and color fidelity.

ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections and provide greater contrast and color fidelity.

Floating elements system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range, from 11.8" to infinity.

Manual focus design is benefitted by focusing and depth of field scales along with hard stops at both infinity and minimum focusing positions.

Weather-resistant construction includes internal seals to guard against dust and moisture as well as a blue sealing ring at the lens mount to protect the lens-camera interface.

All-metal lens barrel has a frosted, anodized surface along with a rubberized focusing ring for both durability and improved tactile control.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What is the diameter of the focus ring? I would like to put a gear ring to use a follow focus, but I need to know the diameter to buy an exact ring. The diameter of the focus ring is the same as its previous version Distagon T * 15mm f / 2.8 ZE?

A: The diameter of the focus ring on this lens is 80mm or 3.15 inches. That information is listed on this spec sheet. https://bhpho.to/38vHqaL

Q: 2. I have the zeiss 15mm Milvus - what NisiI filter system is best?

A: The ZEISS Milvus 2.8/15 features a 95mm screw in filter and ZEISS provides both UV and POL filters in this size.

Q: 3. Is there any noticeable focus breathing when shooting video ?

A: No, not really. However the canon version does not have a manual aperture and this can cause problems depending on what you are shooting.

Q: 4. I use it on a Nikon Z7 with the FTZ adapter and I don't get focus confirmation. Any suggestions?

A: Best bet with this would be to either use the zoom function to zoom in to check focus, or use the focus peaking mode.

Q: 5. Will the de-clicked iris work well with the video on my d780, or does it still need to be locked on like f16 for the Nikon CPU not to Fritz out. If it works well I will probably grab this and an 85 for my film making

A: The aperture of the ZEISS Milvus 35mm f/1.4 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F has a de-click feature specifically for filmmaking applications. To use the manual aperture on the lens, you will need to set this in the camera menu (go to F5 customize command dials, aperture setting and change from sub-command dial to aperture ring).

Q: 6. What is the main difference between the Milvus and the Zeiss Planar 50 1.4 ZF.2 ?

A: The most notable difference would be the Milvus lenses ability to de-click the aperture ring. This allows for silent adjustment making these lenses ideal for video.

Q: 7. How is the image quality compared to the Canon 50mm f/1.2L?

A: I had the Canon 50mm f1.2L and replaced it with the Zeiss which, to me, is clearly superior. The Canon 50mm is a good lens, especially when stopped down to 2.8 or smaller. The Zeiss however presents almost no chromatic aberration noticeable to me even wide open, and the images are crisp and sharp to the corners using my 5DSR. I shoot mostly landscape and night images so I don't miss the autofocus. Yes, the Zeiss is more expensive, but it is a lens that I expect to keep as long as I am able to shoot with it.

Q: 8. Does this lens have hard stops?

A: Yes the lens does have hard stops and you can use the aperture ring manually if you so choose; however, there is also an option to de-click the aperture ring using a tiny tool that is included with the lens. It is very simple to do. So if you are shooting video or you just prefer to not have hard stops than you can use the lens this way. If you prefer hard stops it can do that too! Best of both worlds

Q: 9. Are there different versions of this lens with model numbers?

A: The ZEISS Milvus 35mm f/1.4 is produced in two versions, The ZE which utilizes Canon's EF mount and the ZF.2 which utilizes Nikon's F mount. These two versions of the lens have different model numbers which indicate their mount type.

Q: 10. How sharp is this wide open?

A: Pretty sharp. Its the sharpest wide angle lens Ive ever owned. As the mtf data will suggest, it will outperform Nikons similar offerings wide open.

[62°] It's my first manual focus lens, and it's already changing my shooting process for the better.

[f/22] I needed a 35mm lens in my bag for mostly grab shots and some landscape. I am using this manual focus lens on my D850 and the sharpness and micro-contrast are incredible. I have retired my older 24-70mm non-VR zoom lens and will be adding other Zeiss primes. By holding the lens underneath near the lens cap I am able to handhold this shooting the D850. The CA is there, but it is not severe and easily correctable in LR. The range finder on the D850 is very good and I have found that by focusing just to the right of the left arrow (in front) as the circle appears is the sharpest focus. For my first Zeiss lens I am very happy and will be adding more as $$ permits. I will say the focus peaking feature of the D850 works well in Live View and I also have found that you can rack this lens to infinity and be safe it is in focus due to the hard stop at infinity on the Zeiss. I am hoping the Nikon Z7 will be just as compatible with the Zeiss ZF.2 lenses.

[58 mm (Front)] Build quality is outstanding! Great results if used properly. I found it hard to use on a most crowded and noisy place since I rely on my cameras focus sound as I can?t hear it when it hit the focus so you have to look at the light it get the focus. It?s a little challenging to use in a noisy place at least for me. But the color and sharpness the photo it produces is amazing! I have the lens for 6 months now and I love it! Although it?s not my general lens to use but surely I?m keeping it for years to come

[f/2] Got a copy of this lens from one of the first early batches that shipped. The construction is rock solid. The manual focus and focus markings are buttery and bold, with more throw distance then any of the Nikon G lenses I own. It does not interface well with my D610 body if I want to manually adjust aperture on the lens dial. De-clicking the aperture and using it on the D610 is also weird as a spring or lever on the D610 prevents the loosely adjusted aperture dial from staying in place well. Those can be problems, but I don't care about those in the big scheme. If taken this lens for two still photo assignments and had great results with mild paced action sports. When I focused the lens manually properly, the images were stunning. Overall I've been using this lens on the Sony FS5 using one of two Metabones adapters, a speed-booster ultra and another just Nikon F to Sony E-mount adapter. I LOVE this lens for video, which is primarily why I purchased it. As of today I plan to add the Milvus 50mm 1.4 and 85 1.4 lenses to my camera bag as soon as possible. I'm not seeing any relevant issue of chromatic aberration and wide open in real world use I'm not seeing any distortion or vignetting worth noting, if any. This lens has some weight to it.

[Manual Focus] I was going to buy the Canon 35mm lens, but am happy I opted for this instead. Quality is excellent. Yes, heavier than most, but it hasn't been a huge issue and I've gone on several hikes with it, carrying it, etc. No problems with camera shake or focus issues (which I have had with Canon lenses). I tested my ability to hand hold down to 1/15 and was able to do it (never with the Canon lens). The manual focus is not a problem ... as another reviewer suggested, I use the focus assist (green light in the viewfinder). The resulting photos are stunning and I've eliminated a lot of issues I was having with Canon lenses, which frees me up to focus on more important things, like getting the shot. I'm probably going to trade up my Canon 50mm lens for the Zeiss eventually. Other things: background blur is nice, chromatic aberration is definitely a thing under certain conditions, if you want a light-weight lens, then reconsider. But, this lens has brought my confidence in my photographic ability back (because I was having so many performance issues with the Canon lenses I was doubting myself). Glad I bought this and would recommend it.

[f/2] I have used this lens on the Nikon D850, D810 and Z7ii. It has the legendary Zeiss build quality and can produce very sharp images with beautiful color and contrast. The brokeh is nice in a way that only Zeiss can render, and the manual focus ring is precise in a way my Nikon lenses are
not. This lens is also small and light for a Zeiss prime. Good for semi-wide landscape, portrait, and studio work. While this lens is not as sharp as the new Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 prime, it is still able to produce good micro detail with the classic Zeiss 3D look. The sweet spot is f/10, for highly detailed Landscapes and Close In. My Zeiss 25mm f/2 is an excellent lens and this 35mm is just as good, I think. I would highly recommend this if you do not want to shell out twice as much cash for the f/1.4, but need the 35mm FOV and the Zeiss look in an F-Mount.

[f/2] Sharpest lens I have ever owned, and just a lovely thing to behold. I'm a landscape guy, so the 35mm focal length (full-frame) is kinda my normal lens. Never seen one better.

[35mm] This lens is worth it. Solid. Easy to focus.

Slow down and shoot.

[f/22] I previously owned and loved the classic zf.2 version of this lens and now Ive had the milvus for several months.  The only major differences I can see are positives: the milvus has much better build quality and better weather sealing.  It is still contrasty and crazy-sharp even wide open.  The 3D effect is still very visible as can be seen in my attached tree-stump photo below shot at f/2.  Vignetting is still high but I enjoy the look.  It is easier to manually focus than any other MF lens Ive used. There are LR profiles available for easy corrections.  Less purple fringing on the milvus compared to the older version. If I could only have one lens, this would be it.

[f/22] The feel in hand, richness of colour, and subject isolation make this lens one or my favourites. I can't believe the price of this product versus the other options I've tried (including the Nikon 28mm f1.4). Yes, the manual focus is a hassle, but the results can be oh, so enjoyable!
