A prime portrait-length lens characterized by its complex Planar construction, the Canon EF-mount ZEISS Milvus 85mm f/1.4 ZE Canon EF Lensfrom ZEISS Milvus 85mm f/1.4 ZE Canon EF Lensfeatures a fast maximum aperture along with a unique spherical design to produce especially smooth bokeh for selective focus applications. The Planar design incorporates seven anomalous partial dispersion glass elements to nearly eliminate chromatic aberrations and other distortions for clean, well-corrected imagery. A floating elements system is used, too, for consistent performance throughout the focusing range, in order to achieve even sharpness and clarity. An enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has also been applied to significantly reduce ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

The manual focus design is complemented by a rubberized focus ring for fine-tuned, precise control over your focus position. Additionally, Milvus-series lenses also feature an equally aesthetic and durable frosted, anodized metal lens-barrel surface along with a weather-sealed construction to protect against dust and moisture.

Short telephoto prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 136mm equivalent focal length.

Impressively bright f/1.4 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.

Planar optical design affords high sharpness and consistent performance throughout the focusing range to suit photographing at a wide range of imaging scales.

Seven anomalous partial dispersion elements are used to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and color fidelity.

Unique spherical design produces an especially smooth quality of bokeh to benefit portraiture and selective focus applications.

ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections and provide greater contrast and color fidelity.

Floating elements system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range, from 2.6' to infinity.

Manual focus design is benefitted by focusing and depth of field scales along with hard stops at both infinity and minimum focusing positions.

Weather-resistant construction includes internal seals to guard against dust and moisture as well as a blue sealing ring at the lens mount to protect the lens-camera interface.

All-metal lens barrel has a frosted, anodized surface along with a rubberized focusing ring for both durability and improved tactile control.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this Manual Focus?

A: As with all the ZEISS Milvus lenses, the Milvus 1.4/25 ZE lens is manual focus. The lens does couple to the camera, meta data is transferred, aperture is controlled electronically and focus confirmation is active.

Q: 2. Can I use a regular Metabones adaptor to mount the Zeiss 85 mm to my Fuji X-T2?

A: There are any number of adapters available to use F-mount lenses on X-mount cameras, including the ZEISS Planar 1.4/85 ZF.2. Check out the following link for a listing: a href= https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?ci=3420&fct=fct_camera-fitting-male_1595%7cfujifilm-x%2bfct_lens-fitting-female_1596%7cnikon&origSearch=lens+adapters&N=4077634486& target= _blank https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?ci=3420&fct=fct_camera-fitting-male_1595%7cfujifilm-x%2bfct_lens-fitting-female_1596%7cnikon&origSearch=lens+adapters&N=4077634486&/a

Q: 3. Help. I can't seem to find in any discussion whether the Zeiss Planar T*85mm f/1.4 ZF (not the ZF.2) will work on a Nikon d810. May I know the difference between the ZF and th ZF.2?

A: The ZF is compatible with the D810, it simply does not communicate the exposure details as the ZF.2 version does.

Q: 4. Is this lens a USA item or an international lens ?Is the OP/Tech hood small is used for this lens ?

A: On the box it reads Exclusively for USA and Canada .The lens shade is deep not small like the old zf lenses but more like the Otus.

Q: 5. how would this lens do with the Canon C70 cinema camera? i realise that it is manual focus but then so are most cinema lenses

A: The ZEISS Milvus 25mm f/1.4 ZE Lens for Canon EF will be compatible with the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R on the Canon EOS C70 Cinema Camera (RF Mount), and it offers excellent results.

Q: 6. Does the lens hood come off?

A: Yes, the hood is removeable.

Q: 7. Is there any noticeable focus breathing when shooting video ?

A: No, not really. However the canon version does not have a manual aperture and this can cause problems depending on what you are shooting.

Q: 8. What is the main difference between the Milvus and the Zeiss Planar 50 1.4 ZF.2 ?

A: The most notable difference would be the Milvus lenses ability to de-click the aperture ring. This allows for silent adjustment making these lenses ideal for video.

Q: 9. Can this lens be attached to a SonyNEX-FS700R using an adapter?

A: I totally agreed with you, Pradip, every element in the chain of production should be at the same level, otherwise is pointless. BH recommended me the Metabones Canon EF Lens to Sony NEX Camera Lens Mount Adapter Mark IV to keep full funtionality :). Thank you. Have a nice day.

Q: 10. Will this lens function with the older Canon 1DS MK II?

A: The ZEISS ZE lenses are EF-mount compatible and can be used on any EOS camera model. [f/1.4] Produces outstanding images and impressive color rendition. Color so good that very little, if any, work is required in post production. Skin tones appear as they should. While many comment that Zeiss lenses are expensive, the lenses are actually part of an overall low-cost solution when one considers that less time may be required in post production.

[0.12x] The ZEISS Milvus 85mm f/1.4 ZE is a very good lens. The color reproduction is really outstanding with ZEISS lenses. I just sold my 3 (three) SIGMA art lenses because I could easily see that the ZEISS offers superior color quality. If you want real professional results go with the ZEISS products.

[Manual Focus] Nikon Z7 and Milvus 85, what a great combo! Focusing is easy and enjoyable, and the lens is super sharp wide open! I have used many Nikon, Leica and Zeiss over the years, but I must say this is definitely one of my favorite.  The lens is worth every penny!

[4.21 lb] Call me Mr Opposite. At 63, I am getting rid of my nice Canon L Zoom Trilogy and going all primes. Z Milvus 21, 25, 35, 85, 135. Why simplify?
Quality of image is my goal. After testing for a few months, my latest image sold me on my decision. Using a single row pano setup, I stitched around 10 images together. Location was Pedernales Falls -Texas State Park at the Overlook. 800 feet of scenery at a distance of 130 to 250 yards. After stitching, a 13 foot print ready file at 600 dpi left me and my friends stunned. Unbelievable detail. Color was great. Not the same color impression as my Zeiss 21, or Zeiss Otus 28, but still testing. Very impressed.

[Manual Focus] This lens will blow the Canon 85 f/1.2 out of the water. Color, bokeh, and build quality for less money. I love the manual focus it really brings back the art of framing.

[Full-Frame] My top concern was the manual focusing as I shoot my portraits wide open, usually F1.4-F2. But up to now, all my images from this superb lens are super sharp and in focus. The image quality is amazing.

[f/1.4] My very first Zeiss lens! Video producer, 30+ years. Own company. Needed lens for more cinematic look and network show. I've been through the litany of ENG and field production cameras. I evolved to Nikon D850. Colors and clarity rival or surpass REDs, etc. (I can hear the camera snobs heads exploding.) Nikon camera made beautiful video, so I wanted a lens to up my game. Invested in the Zeiss Milvus 85mm. Not disappointed. Crystal clear picture and the depth of field melts away. Not the slightest fish-eye edges or dark corners. I realize the Milvus is primarily a still shot lens but again, it's my first entry into Zeiss. It proves more than capable for video. I love Nikkor lenses as well, but you can immediately notice the Zeiss quality and construction. Sturdy and accurate. I will definitely purchase other Zeiss products as my budget permits.

[Manual Focus] I purchased this lens to complete a set of Milvus lenses for the Nikon d850. Beyond the optical qualities of these lenses, the most compelling reason I found to own them is the precision in focus one has. This is especially true when one takes the time to compose carefully on a stable tripod. Wide open, accurate manual focus is a breeze using the back screen with magnification when necessary. Off the tripod, of course the combination is somewhat heavy, but that's both bad for those not used to it but good for handheld stability, and all a matter of to what one is has become accustomed. Coming from a long experience with medium format film cameras, I find that there's nothing much here to complain about. When handheld, of course, one has to be mindful of having sufficient shutter speed and it helps to stop down a bit to increase depth of field, but none of this is new practice. If the conditions permit it, I prefer to have control of exact focus myself rather than depending on an autofocus system, as good as it may be, make decisions about what's in focus for me. Run and gun with shallow depth of field would, of course, be a different matter, but here you're guessing anyway.

[f/16] I shoot landscapes and cityscapes only now, I've used all the Canon L lenses, and they are very good. Switched to all Zeiss over the last 7 years. Sold my Canon 70-200 2.8 L crazy sharp lens to go with Milvus 85 and 135. Had them 3 years now in many locations. The 85 is my fav, and as you know, the reviews for the 135 are incredible. The 85 is razor sharp to the corners at f8-11. I prefer its rendering to the 135 for my landscape style. I have used all the Otus lenses, and agree at 1.4, the Otus in center and edges is a smidge sharper-more contrast. But the out of focus areas of the Milvus 85 are sublime. Smoother than my 135. I'm surprised that I tend to pack the 21 35 85 or 25 35 85 combo the most. Recent 6 week trip out west had about 35% of the images shot with the 85mm. Absolutely a lens I never want to be without. There is just something special about it. Strongly recommend it. If you buy on sale, unbelievable value for cost.
