The TASCAM DA-6400 64-Channel Digital Multitrack Recorderfrom TASCAM DA-6400 64-Channel Digital Multitrack Recorderis a 64-channel digital multitrack recorder/player that records to an internal SSD caddy for live and event recording. With I/O options like MADI and DANTE, it is ideal for live recordings, event capture, or to a backup for critical DAW sessions. In addition, the DA-6400 is a suitable option for professional remote recording.

Furthermore, the recorder/player features an AK-CC25 hot-swappable caddy containing a 240GB TASCAM solid-state drive, and the caddy includes a USB-3 jack for stand-alone use. This allows you to hand the drive to the client to offload the BWAV-files into their DAW session. The DA-6400 records 64 tracks at 48 kHz/24-bit or 32 tracks at 96 kHz/24-bit. Also, included on the rear panel are SMPTE timecode, word clock, RS-422, parallel, Ethernet connections and two power supply inlets.

The I/O options for the DA-6400 include the IF-MA64/EX interface card (sold separately), with both coaxial and optical MADI connections. This card contains a redundant coaxial connection so that MADI is passed through even if power is lost, making it an ideal backup recorder for DAW sessions. Additional cards (sold separately) include the IF-MA64/BN coaxial MADI card, IF-DA64 Dante card, and IF-AE16 AES/EBU card, with more to come.

In conclusion, the TASCAM DA-6400 combines high performance, flexibility, and complete reliability in a solid-state 64-track recorder.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. On Dec.4,2019, Zoom customer support answered "They(Ch7,8)are each mono inputs" then on Mar.2nd, 2020, Zoom customer support said "Channels 7 and 8 are both stereo channels" . Which answer is correct? Are ch7,8 two mono or two stereo?

A: It depends on the input. If you are using the 1/4" input it's mono, the 3.5mm is stereo (using both 7 and 8).

Q: 2. Does phantom power apply to the TRS portion of the combo jacks, or just the XLR portion?

A: The Zoom LiveTrak L-8 can only supply phantom power via XLR. 1/4" TRS devices connected to its combo jacks will not receive phantom power.

Q: 3. Can I output the audio using xlr or 1/4" trs to a speaker? I want to use this for DJ but not sure if it will work or not

A: You can connect the main outputs of this unit to active speakers, with a 1/4-inch TRS connection, with a cable such as the Pearstone PM Series 1/4" TRS Male to XLR Female Professional Interconnect Cable (15'), BH #PEPMTRSXF15. The mixer has many features aimed at people maing podcasts, but if you are planning to DJ and stream out to a computer, or to record your set on to an SD card, this would be a good option for you.

Q: 4. What can be said about the clock accuracy on this unit? I own a Zoom R16 and have also worked with output from their other recorders. Loading to my NLE, there is always large drift over an hour recording (e.g. a full second+) I'm hoping this is better?

A: Thank you for your question. I spoke with Zoom directly and they do not have a measurement for clocking accuracy but they did say that the improvements over the R16 are vast and you should not have any noticeable drift

Q: 5. Can I connect my studio monitors from the xlr outputs to the trs balanced cable?

A: If your active studio monitors have a 1/4-inch TRS balanced input, you can use cables such as these: Pearstone PM Series 1/4" TRS Male to XLR Female Professional Interconnect Cable (10'), BH #PEPMTRSXF10.

Q: 6. Can you record the master mix to the SD card? Mine records multitrack which is great sometimes but other times I just want the main mix.

A: You can select the master mix to record a stereo mix, as well as the discreet channel recordings to the SD card.

Q: 7. What is the model of compatible Kensington lock for the Zoom L8? Thanks!

A: As per Zoom Audio, the dimensions of the Kensington lock port on the back of the Zoom L8 is 9mm horizontal, 7.5mm vertical, depth is 9.5mm. In light of this, it would work just fine with a 5mm Kensington Lock.

Q: 8. Does this work well with Mac Os Catalina?

A: Yes!

Q: 9. The audio recorded on each track is Raw audio (pre faders and or EFX) or is recorded after process? Thanks

A: The recording is pre-fader and pre-effects. It can also be pre-compressor, there is a setting for that. So yes, it is RAW . The other person who answered is wrong.

Q: 10. How do you change master out xlr's from line to mic out or vise versa?

A: The Zoom LiveTrak L-8 Portable 8-Channel Digital Mixer and Multitrack Recorder's Master Out XLR connections are specified at Line Level and do not have an option to be changed to Mic Level. It does appear that the output level from the XLR connectors can be affected by the Master Fader, however.

[FAT32 ] Is it perfect? Probably not to everyone, but it is perfect for me. I am a drummer and I do a lot of multitrack recording. This product feels like the people at Zoom have been doing their research into how humans interact with their products. It is very easy to use, very easy to learn, everything makes sense, and with only a little bit of reading you can get up to speed very quickly. The quality of the board is great, especially for the cost. And the sound is incredible. Using the USB connection to a notebook running Logic Pro was completely uneventful... It just works (after uploading the driver) and it works exceptionally well. I haven't run into a single area where this board comes up short. Would buy again and again.

[AC Input] Zoom is thinking like us musicians and what we need. A live mixer and a recorder plus 5 aux sends for headphones or monitors with effects is a game changer. It all ends up separately on an SD for post creative possibilities in you DAW.....wow

[BWF, WAV] This machine has quite a bit packed into it for the price, so if you do multi-track recording or live event stuff with complicated audio setups, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better bang for the buck. There is one annoying thing that WAS NOT mentioned in any of the manuals and that is that a lot of the individual control you have with things like EQ, effects, etc, are DISABLED if you put the sample rate into 96Khz instead of 48Khz. I spent an hour trying to figure that out since it wasn't mentioned anywhere in the official documentation.

I would also like to note that it would good for any user to distinguish controls for recording versus live output as the two are not necessarily one in the same.

[16 / 24-Bit] Using this to record drums at home. It's perfect. Its my first mixer and so while I am a novice (and learning), this is absolutely perfect for my needs. Very easy to use, compact, and the recording function is everything. I really have no complaints whatsoever. I can see this board staying in my music world for a long time. Its a steal at the price. Very very happy.

[Rackmount] Im only using one stereo channel, but having the others available is a big plus.  The thing I like most is the ability to impromptu record when something in my messing around is worth recording.  Keep it routed and just press (rec) (play).

[BWF, WAV] So my band - Chimera - (https://open.spotify.com/artist/5lkJIQnKpJYciREbqQp6Jj) bought this Zoom recorder to record our rehearsals and live shows to then be able to mix and sweeten in Apple Logic down the road. It is working great! We record 8 tracks live into the Zoom on SD card and then I pop it out, into my Mac Studio and the tracks are right there to import into Logic. A little re-naming before importing and everything works perfectly. Still need to tweek some of the settings for recording specific instruments (bass) but overall - great right out of the box. Additionally, the customer service from B&H - as always - was superb. I had a few questions about the interface to my Mac Studio and other audio interface hardware, and the B&H folks showed me how I can turn the 12 tracks I have with the Zoom into 20 tracks with my other hardware. It would have taken me hours (if not longer) to figure that out. Thanks B&H.
