Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is it possible to simultaneously record multi-track to a DAW and have a 1-to-1 pass thru for the first 8 XLR inputs to the first 8 TRS outputs? I'd like to basically put this in front of my 10ch mixer as a "pass thru multi-channel audio interface"

A: The included DSP mixer allows the user to route any input to any output, so this type of "pass-through" recording should be possible with the Tascam US-16x08.

Q: 2. can this recorder playback audio files?

A: Yes it can. Audio File Formats: BWF, MP3, WAV Sample Rates WAV: 44.1 / 48 / 96 kHz MP3: 44.1 / 48 kHz Bit Depth 16 / 24-Bit

Q: 3. Does the new dr 40x allow me to record directly to my camcorder’s / dslr’s soundtrack in real time without having to sync later? If so, where is the “line out” of unit located?

A: There's a line out/ headphone output on the top left side of the recorder. This gives a line level out and your camera takes a microphone level signal, in order for the sound to come out clean in the recoding in your camera SD card you will need a attenuator cable such as the one in the link bellow https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/746645-REG/Sescom_LN2MIC_ZOOMH4N_LN2MIC_ZOOMH4N_Line_to.html?sts=pi&pim=Y

Q: 4. Are the pre-amps improved comparing to the old dr-40 version ?

A: The preamps are slightly improved from the first version, a audio interface was integrated allowing to transfer data via USB from the DR-40 to the computer , in addition a dictation mode was added designed for human voice recording and transcription.

Q: 5. Can you record from a 3.5mm input? If I have a mic powered by the 3.5 input, will it work with this recorder?

A: The DR40X does not have a 3.5mm mic input. But, what you could do is use a Rode VXLR+, which connects to an XLR input and drops the Phantom Power to Plug-in power for your 3.5mm mic https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1358231-REG/rode_vxlr_mini_jack_to_xlr_adaptor.html?sts=pi&pim=Y

Q: 6. Can you use this with a DSLR to record sound?

A: Yes, the DR-40X can be used to record audio for video filmed with a DSLR camera. The audio tracks recorded on the DR-40X can be combined with the video tracks in post production.

Q: 7. Would this work with Ableton Live 9?

A: This interface will work fine with most popular DAWs including Ableton LIVE 9.

Q: 8. can this be used with a usb hub, a powered hub? i only have one usb-c port om my computer.

A: It is recommended that you use a powered USB hub.

Q: 9. record phone call from smartphones?

A: Recording a smartphone call to a device like the Tascam DR-40X 4-Channel / 4-Track Portable Audio Recorder may prove difficult, as the hardwired output from the phone will typically only send audio from the caller on the other end into the recorder. In theory, the person on the recording end of the call could connect a microphone to the second input on the DR-40X and speak into the microphone while using the phone like a speakerphone. There are devices designed to simplify this scenario, such as BH #JKCELLTAP4C JK Audio CellTap 4C Wireless Phone Audio Tap Adapter, which can output both sides of the call to a recorder. The easiest method may be to identify an application compatible with your specific smartphone that is capable of recording the phone call directly to your phone.

Q: 10. How much is the transformer for 5V input ?

A: We do not have the Tascam branded power supply for this unit, You may wnat to contact them directly. If you would like a universal power supply this one would work for you: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/574791-REG/Hosa_Technology_ACD_477_ACD_477_Universal_Power_Adapter.html?sts=pi&pim=Y

[0.7 lb (0.3 kg)] First of all, great service by B&H as this unit arrived in one day, and they had great pre-sale support when I had questions about recording times and other features. I am using this mixer/recorder with my live band, and I love this thing! It is super easy to work, and it sounds great (very warm sounding and “punchy”). The main reason that I got this unit was for the built-in MULTI-TRACK recorder. Lots of mixers have a two track recorder, but this is the only one that I know of that allows you to record each individual channel. You can quickly re-mix and re-balance the recording to create a great sounding live mix. I have to say that it is the first time in my 15-year career as a live performer that I have actually gotten a “board tape” that sounds good! Keep in mind that you can do this WITHOUT a computer!! If you want to use a computer (or if you want to take tracks off of Pro Tools or something) and then re-mix them through the board, you can do that, but I have been able to make great sounding live recordings without dragging my laptop to the gig (a very good thing in my opinion). I also really like the on-board one knob compressor (although it can sound a bit “squashed” if you push it too hard). The built-in effects sound great (would like more choices, but what they do have is very useable). All in all, I’m very happy with the sound quality and especially the ease of use.

[Dante] The mixer is very easy and quick to set up, feels solid and well made, and can work for a many different types of projects. I set mine up for a podcast in under ten minutes with limited knowledge on audio mixers, so it is very intuitive and the multi-track recording made it very easy to edit and publish.

[0.53 lb] Plead guilty to having more money than common sense in this regard and therefore, at the moment, I have both devices (line out from Rode to Mixcast downstream) and they are both very well built, big bang for the bucks and very comparable. Comes down to personal preference. I have long experience with Tascam products, not so with Rode. Mixcast sliders VERY smooth and absolutely silent. Rode a tiny bit rough and tiny noise. Mix stores more sound pad recordings because it utilizes the SD card. Rode uses limited internal memory. With a little larger display, Mix shows sound pad labels WITH the VU meter (a biggie for me). Rode on separate screen page. Rode has quicker access to Mic modifications with dedicated buttons above sliders. Mix has fun voice changer that can be assigned to a sound pad button (for one mic). Rode uses micro SD cards (and I personally hate those tiny things) whereas Mix uses full size. To these old ears, sound quality comparable which I happen to think is largely a matter of Mic anyway (and BTW I highly recommend the Shure FM7Bs). So, MY personal preference is the Mixcast but only by a nose. Me thinks, one can't go wrong.

[0.7 lb (0.3 kg)] As I am upgrading my production machines to apple silicon, I was in need of a new high channel count Dante interface for my virtual soundcheck machine. This installed and configured with zero issues, recording 128 channels at 96k, also using prodcom for speech to text for talkback mics on an M1 Mac mini. Flawless. Highly recommend. The fact that Dante Controller is also able to utilize this as a NIC is a huge plus over the now obsolete Dante accelerator card.

[64] We put our own drive in one of these and it works great! Easy to take with you for post-production work after you're done capturing.

[Dante] I thoroughly shopped before choosing an interface, consulting with sound pros. They convinced me that I would not be disappointed with this purchase and they're right!

[64] Great recorder with the options I need for my location recording work. I own 2 of these because they are rock solid and easy to connect via my needs.

[0.53 lb] I've used other brands of podcast mixers before and TASCAM's Mixcast 4 is by far the easiest.

Whether you're an amateur or a pro, the Mixcast 4 is extremely user-friendly. You can plug and play using the default settings (which are actually pretty decent straight out of the gate) or you can add compression, noise gating, or a couple other useful tools.

The pads are really easy to load or sync from your computer too; there are even more banks than I ever had with the competitor's unit.

TASCAM really outdid themselves on this one. Cheers!
