The Tiffen 4x4 Glimmerglass 1/16 Filteris a beauty filter whose function is two-fold: in addition to modifying the appearance of the image itself, it also features a sparkling appearance when viewed from the front, instilling more confidence in the model. The filter itself helps to soften skin details, blemishes, and wrinkles. It also produces glowing highlights and a mild reduction in contrast for a more ethereal appearance. The 1/16 density provides less softening than the 1/8.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch. This filter measures 4 x 4" / 101.6 x 101.6mm.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this lens have manual focus available? I am wondering that If I use ND filter, how it still be able to auto focus? Please help and Thank you!

A: All lenses designed for the Sony E-mount have the capability to be focused manually. The Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35mm f/4 ZA OSS Lens has both a zoom ring and a focus ring on the lens, and the camera on which the lens is used may be set to either autofocus or manual focus, depending on your needs. Also, depending on the strength of your neutral density (ND) filter and the current ambient light level, autofocus may be possible, but if you are using a strong ND filter or working in low lighting, you may need to first pre-focus with the camera in manual mode before attaching the filter to the lens to capture your image.

Q: 2. Does the OSS work well with IBIS for video?

A: Yes, the ibis and lens oss work in tandem and do a great job, the camera primarily takes over but uses both.

Q: 3. Anyone used this lens on the Sony a7II? I am considering this or the Canon 16-34 F4.

A: I've used both. I prefer the Sony 16-35. it's sharp and quick to focus. smaller size as well

Q: 4. What polarizer can I use with this that will give me 1) No vignetting and 2) Blue sky will not be uneven (usually on 16mm, blue sky will be thick in middle when using polarizer) ?

A: No polarizer will work because in a wide angle lens the angle of light incidence is beyond the polarizing angle in the corners. Even a huge 6x6 will not stop uneven sky.Its not necessary anyway....skies are evenly darker blue in wide angle lenses...better to use a big graduated filter to bring down the sky brightness to emphasize the foreground detail, and still get beautiful deep sky blue.

Q: 5. How equal is or not is the Sony 16 to 35mm F4 versus the Sony 16 to 35mm F2.8 (such as wide open versus stepped down comparison on each)? thank you

A: I've not compared the two. I'm very satisfied with the F2.8

Q: 6. Bought the lens and love it - however, I cannot find a number to pin to how many stops of light the stabilization is equivalent to, anyone know?

A: You gain about 3 stops of light.

Q: 7. How does this lens compare to the Sony Vario-Tessar 16-70mm f/4 Lens?

A: They both are very good lenses Zeiss glass , 16-70mm is not a full frame lens .

Q: 8. I have a 72 mm circular polarizing filter and it won't screw onto this lens. It actually seems to be much too small. I thought this lens takes 72mm filters. What is going on?

A: The lens is 72mm and all my 72mm filters fit it including Polarizers. Your Polarizer must be marked incorrectly.

Q: 9. Does this lens have dedicated physical switches for AF/MF and OSS?

A: No, you need to use your camera to switch AF/MF.

Q: 10. Will a normal UV filter create vignetting? Will this lens require a slim filter to avoid this?

A: I equiped my Tessar with a normal (Hoya) UV filter without noticing any vignetting!

[Glass] I was worried that a 1 strength would be really glow-y the way a promist would, but you only really see an obvious glow in very strong back-lit or high contrast conditions. Otherwise it's a very a very gentle touch on highlights and overall contrast.

Also the idea that a sparkly filter inspires confidence in a model is the silliest selling point I've ever heard, and my models laughed at the idea of it ... which got me some genuine smiles, so I guess there's that.

[Glass] Adds a subtle glow and sheen to the image, really helps breath some organic life into even the most sterile digital cameras.

[Glass] I was looking for a filter that would bloom the highlights and practical light sources without decreasing the overall contrast of the image, and I think this was just the filter I wanted. Compared to Black Pro Mist and especially Cinebloom, the shadow levels and sharpness are maintained with this filter. The diffusion is just enough for me. To me, it seems it blooms the highlights and light sources just enough to look like my image was shot on film, but without being too dramatic or noticeable. I think if I were going for a more dreamy look, I'd go with a higher Glimmerglass strength or use something like Cinebloom.

[Glass] Tiffen Filters are always the best when it comes to build quality, reliability and options they provide. I am super happy with my 2 Set of Glimmerglass!!:) They make the image naturally gloomy without washing out the entire scene.

Also B&H did a perfect job on shipping and customer contact! I live in Germany and my package arrived only 4 days after my order was placed. Thanks, you guts are the best!

[0.355 lb] Great filter to give some softness to the highlights without intense halation

[0.355 lb] So I have used the GlimmerGlass series a lot as a large matte-box filter on the cinema cameras. But sometimes I go and shoot inserts on a lighter setup with my FX6 and a Zoom lens. For that purpose this filter is absolutely perfect. If the 1/2, 3/4 and 1/4 become available as 82mm filters I will purchase them.

[0.355 lb] Works well so far, and is less obscene than even 1/4 black pro mist can be. And price is fair. Now why do these filters cost 500% more in rectangular shape?

[0.355 lb] Lots of reviews suggest the 1/8 for a more 'filmic look but I found that I needed the 1/4 strength to get that effect.

Note that focal length and the quality of the light itself will impact the outcome.

A note regarding the GG1: This provides a very noticeable effect in most cases. Maybe a tad too much for everyday use.

Tiffen needs a magical filter that works on the jpeg but leaves the raw alone !
