Made for cameras weighing up to 25 lb, this Davis & Sanford ProElite Tripod with 3-25 Fluid Headis made up of 2-stage quick-lock legs with a 100mm bowl and a 3-25 fluid head with a 100mm ball base. The head will hold and counterbalance cameras up to 25 lb, making it useful for supporting either a large or small camcorder, a DSLR, or a mirrorless camera even while using larger lenses. The tripod supports payloads of up to 88lb, so even larger video heads or heavy dollies and sliders can be supported by the tripod itself.

The tripod head uses a mini-euro style quick release plate which is secured by a sliding platform to balance your camera. Pan and tilt drag can be adjusted in four steps, and the counterbalance can be added in three increments including zero. The extendable pan handle can be secured to either the left or right side of the head, to accommodate right- or left-handed users.

The aluminum tripod legs feature dual flip-lock stages and a mid-level spreader for use on even and uneven surfaces. With the legs at their full extension, the tripod is 63.5" tall, and it compacts to 32.5". The rubber feet on the bottom can be removed to reveal metal spikes for extra traction outdoors.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Where is this tripod head made (country of manufacture)? Thanks.

A: I can't find anything on the head or the packaging showing where it was manufactured. I would suggest contacting the company directly.

Q: 2. ratchet lever broke. Where can I buy the part?

A: Please follow this link to contact Davis and Sanford: http://bit.ly/19hWRnO

Q: 3. Is this head compatible with Manfrotto 501PL quick release plates?

A: Yes, it is compatible.

Q: 4. I know it's rated for 18 lbs but can it support a full-sized URSA with minimal accessories?

A: The BMD Ursa weighs 16 pounds before you add a battery, lens and other accessories. It is going to be very hard to keep the Ursa at the 18 pound mark, we advise against using this head. You can start your search with systems that have the Manfrotto 509HD Head. The 509HD has a load capacity of 29 pounds, which is enough to handle the Ursa and accessories. You will also need a VCT-14 Quick Release Tripod Adapter to mount the Ursa on any tripod.

Q: 5. does this have a flat base?

A: Yes, this has a flat base.

Q: 6. Is this the FM18 or FM18/2? I just got burned buying the ProVista tripod clearly showing a picture of the FM18/2 (like this product image) and received the FM18 which is stiff and not as fluid.

A: It's the FM18/2.

Q: 7. can I use this tripod for DLSRs?

A: The shoe is quite universal. I use it for both my canon 7D and my Sony NEX - VG10

Q: 8. Does this head come with 2 QR plates?

A: yep

Q: 9. Any tricks for adjusting fluid tension? My first one of these is fine. But my second is too stiff, causing ride-back to every tilt.

A: The knob on the left of the head controls tilt tension.

Q: 10. Would this work well for a dslr (6dii)? I'm only seeing photos with larger video cameras.

A: Yes, the Davis & Sanford Provista 7518B Tripod Kit is compatible with the Canon 6D mark II.

[14 lb / 6.4 kg] I bought one of these to replace a Smith Victor Pro-5 Head that developed a serious wobble. The two heads, FM18 and Pro-5, both appear to be cast from the same molds. The FM18 claims to be a fluid head, whereas the Pro-5 is a fluid effect head. By comparison, I like the FM18 better, as the pan arms are longer, one-piece constructed, and it seems sleeker. My long-time fave, Manfrotto 3063, may have to step aside. The FM18's pan and tilt actions are smooth and solid, and suits my style well. I disagree with other posts on the net I've read that complain about this head. The FM18 is well suited for my AG-DVC30, and smaller video cams.

[3.9" / 100 mm] I love how nicely and smoothly the pan and tilt for this head works. It's just that the bottom of it was flat so it didn't fit the legs I had bought (my legs had a rounded bottom), so unfortunately I had to return it.

[34" / 86.4 cm] I have one FM18 fluid head on my tripod and this one goes on the camera slider I built. The advantage is in using the same quick connect plate which come with the FM18. It makes my reconfigurations a snap...pun intended! This head is a great price and is smooth, sturdy, easily adjustable and looks professional. I recommend it to anyone who is a professional or serious amatuer videographer.

[QR3] After much research I chose this tripod head - mostly based on the fact that Kessler used to sell their smallest cranes in a package with this head. At the time, the crane was heavier than the current model, so I thought I'd be in good shape. Many people had success pairing this with a KC-Lite 8.0, which I fly with small cameras. The FM18 is underrated for that much weight, so the crane leans away from the rig a bit. It's too early to be conclusive, but so far the moving parts all feel like quality craftsmanship and I'm optimistic. (except for the slight lean, which makes me think that over time it will fail) I can't take a single thing away from this head because I knew it was underrated for my application and I am still very impressed with the quality, especially when I'm just supporting my rod system without the crane.

[3-step (0 to 2)] A really impressive piece of equipment for the price, of solid construction. It's heavy, but that's what I wanted as my dslr, cage rig and monitor weigh about 11lbs all together and the FM18 can support an 18lb load while most of the cheaper heads available here in Europe are not up to the job or are not real fluid heads. The quick release plate functions well and includes a safety catch and a ratchet-style mechanism for locking the plate in place. A replacement top plate is also included. The FM18 has a 3/8 screw so I had to purchase a 1/4 adaptor to attach it to the tripod, but it wasn't expensive and works fine. The head itself has good fluidity.
