Bright-eyed and wide-angled, the Canon EF-mount ZEISS Otus 28mm f/1.4 ZE Canon EF Lensis an optically-refined prime poised to deliver a high degree of resolution and clarity in nearly any shooting condition. Featuring an apochromatic design, and utilizing the Distagon concept to reduce distortion, this lens uses a series of eight anomalous partial dispersion glass elements and two aspherical elements to virtually eliminate chromatic and spherical aberrations throughout the aperture range. A floating elements system is also used for consistent performance throughout the focusing range and a ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating suppresses lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color fidelity. Equaling the optical prowess of a Strigidae-inspired lens, the Otus 28mm f/1.4 is also characterized by a robust physical design for intuitive, exacting handling.

The wide-angle focal length pairs with the bright f/1.4 maximum aperture to suit working in broad variety of lighting conditions and is well-suited to a range of applications, including landscape, architecture, and interior photography. Accentuating the range of control, this manual focus lens is complemented by haptic design elements, including a rubberized focus ring and an all-metal lens barrel with high-visibility yellow scale markings.

Wide-angle prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 44.8mm equivalent focal length.

Impressively bright f/1.4 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.

Distagon optical concept affords high sharpness, well-corrected image quality from edge-to-edge, and very low field curvature.

Apochromatic optical design utilizes eight anomalous partial dispersion elements to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and color fidelity.

Two aspherical elements control distortion and spherical aberrations in order to produce greater sharpness and more accurate rendering.

ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections and provide greater contrast and color fidelity.

Floating elements system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range, from 11.8" to infinity.

Manual focus design is benefitted by focusing and depth of field scales, which are filled with a high-visibility yellow paint, along with hard stops at both infinity and minimum focusing positions.

All-metal lens barrel has a frosted, anodized surface along with a rubberized focusing ring for both durability and improved tactile control.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can you manually change the iris on these lenses?

A: No, as with most lenses compatible with the EF mount system, the aperture on the ZEISS Otus ZE lenses is controlled electronically by the camera body.

Q: 2. Where is it made?

A: The ZEISS Otus lenses are designed by ZEISS in Germany and manufactured in Japan.

Q: 3. What is the image circle produced by this lens? Will it cover Fuji or Hasselblad medium format sensors?

A: The ZEISS Otus lenses are designed for cameras using a 24mm x 36mm format and with image circles of 43.3mm. The use of these lenses on cameras with larger sensors will result in vignetting in the corners.

Q: 4. Do these lenses show visible breathing?

A: The ZEISS Otus lenses exhibit only a small amount of breathing when used for motion capture and well within acceptable tolerances.

Q: 5. Can this lens work on a Nikon FM3A film camera? And how about Leica M cameras?

A: Yes, the ZEISS Otus 14/85 will work on this FM3A camera. For a complete list of compatible cameras, visit our site at: https://www.zeiss.com/camera-lenses/int/photography/content/camera-mounts.html. With regards to compatibility with M mount cameras, yes it can be used with any 3rd party F-mount to m-mount adapter.

Q: 6. Would you please explain to me.why zeiss do not have 85mm circular polarize{CP} ?

A: Could be because Zeiss doesn't make a lens that takes an 85mm filter.

Q: 7. I have the Sony a7r2 & the new a9Would like to purchase this lenseWhat adapter will be the best to use with thisClass of lense. And do we loose if anything

A: Using the ZEISS Otus 1.4/85 ZF.2 would require a F-to-E mount adapter. There are many options available from B&H Photo as you will see by using the link below. These adapters are simply spacers that move the lens to its specified flange focal distance - in this case 46.5mm. Keep in mind, the F-to-E mount adapters do not provide communication with the Sony camera body, so there is no meta data transferred, metering is manual and the lens' aperture needs to be stopped down prior to exposure. Many customers prefer to use EF lenses and a 'smart' EF-to E adapter, due to the communication between lens, adapter and camera. a href= https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?atclk=Lens+Fitting_Nikon&ci=3420&origSearch=lens+adapters&N=4077634486+3839671235+4289371044& target= _blank https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?atclk=Lens+Fitting_Nikon&ci=3420&origSearch=lens+adapters&N=4077634486+3839671235+4289371044&/a

Q: 8. Two lens gears or three?

A: The ZEISS Otus ZE 3-Lens Bundle for Canon EF includes three lens gears. You get one ZEISS Lens Gear (Medium) abd two ZEISS Lens Gear (Large).

Q: 9. Is there any way to use a Zeiss Otus lens on an Arri Alex Plus, that allows the F-Stop to be changed?

A: The ZEISS Otus Lens is available in EF or F mount. The first determination is whether this camera model has an optional mount system to accept these still camera mounts. Second, if an EF mount option is available, it must be an 'active' mount in order to engage the electronic aperture in the lens.

Q: 10. Is there any warranty included by B&H for this lens? If not, is there an aftermarket warranty I can purchase to protect my investment (ie. Squaretrade)?

A: This product has a two year, limited manufacturer's warranty.

[f/1.4] I own already Zeiss zf 25/2, 35/2 and 100/2 and they are my most used lenses on the Nikon 800. I was pleasantly surprised that the Otus 55/1.4 is in many respects even better than my other Zeiss lenses. Notably, the excellent sharpnes wide open over the entire FOV, the very smooth transition from in-focus to out-of-focus parts of the image, plus the beautiful color rendering. Manual Focus is quite easy due to the wide throw of the focus ring - I have clibrated the focus confirmation indicator, and I have no problems getting tack sharp picture when hand holding. I use this lens mainly for landscape, for architecture and for general photography. I believe the lens is best at medium and far distances. For close-ups and bokeh I prefer the zf 100/2.

[Manual Focus] This is my third Zeiss, second Otus, for my Nikon D810A. The 85/1.4 arrives tomorrow. I recently took this lens, the 28/1.4, the Milvus 15, and several Nikon and Sigma lenses, p.us an additional D810 body and tripods to the Maldives. Schlepping that much weight was not trivial, but easily worth it. I ended up using the 55 more than any of the other lenses. I had forgotten how challenging and liberating it is to see the world through a normal focal length. But other than that, there is nothing normal about this lens. As other reviewers have noted, the images OOTC look like they have already been processed. Color, clarity, and contrast produce a natural 3D effect. I have included two images I shot handheld of a small about -inch long crag next to a pool. Sun was overhead around midday, so light was flat and not flattering. My focus here is not very good, but it's good enough to illustrate the point. Zero processing other than the crop, and the JPEG quality compression. The crop is approximately 3:1, and the amount of detail is just amazing. And this is with significant image compression to get the pics small enough to upload here. Shot was 1/1250 at 4.5. In RAW, on a 4K iMac, these are something else. The cons about these lenses are well-known: size, weight, expense. Makes it a pretty easy decision for most. For me, although difficult to transport, I cannot imagine leaving any of these lenses home.

[Canon EF] This lens is amazing. After shooting it for a week the photos from other pro Nikon lenses look simply not as great. The quality and details are stunning. Yes, it's big, it's heavy, it's manual and quite expensive, but the picture quality and look is worth this spend. Using it together with my d810 I'm very close to medium format.

[Canon EF] Sold my Leica M9 and three Lux lenses due to low hit rate. When it was on though, Wow, hard to beat the Leica glass. So, decided to try the Zeiss 55. Got it used from B&H. Saved a few hundred and the lens was essentially brand new. Have to say, this lens and a D810 is the ultimate. Much easier to focus than the range finder and this lens does not take a back seat to Leica glass. Very pleased.

[5.245 lb] Upon delivery, I did my usual lens protocol (just to be sure all was A-OK), and took the new Otus out to my backyard. It was a very dark, flat, overcast fall day. I took a variety of shots at varying distances. I ranged between using 1.4 and 8.0 apertures, never going more than 400 iso, and most often 100 iso. I shot both material objects and plant life, all handheld. Viewing these images later on my computer, caused me to to just shake my head in wonder. Every single one was crisp, artful, with beautifully rendered colors, and all had that Zeiss Otus magic. I cannot yet imagine what a tripod-mounted, good weather day will yield with this lens, but I'm pretty excited thinking about it. I deliberated a long time before making this special purchase. I'm so glad that it lived up to, and surpassed, my very high expectations. Fantastic!

[5.245 lb] So sharp, even when wide open, that it shows itself best on high megapixel bodies like the D800e or D810. Manual only operation makes it best suited to studio work.
