Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can you connect an AC Adapter instead of using batteries?

A: Richard, no you cannot. Please know the batteries seem to last a long time. In addition, if you are considering using this ring light with an MP-E65mm lens it will not be sufficient for the close range.

Q: 2. I have an Olympus micro 4/3 and an Oly 60mm macro lens, with a diameter of 46mm. I also have a 46 to 58mm adapter. Will it work with that configuration? Thank you very much for your response (Gabriel, from Argentina)

A: Yes, it will work but a 46-49mm step ring would be better, more streamlined without having a large step ring on the front element.

Q: 3. Can this shoot in high-speed synch mode with a D810?

A: It will... but not necessary. This light is not a strobe, per se. A strobe needs to be synchronized with a shutter because of the extremely short duration of the light flash. The VM 110 will work fine with your D810, because the lights are on for longer than the shutter is open. (at high speed). I am oversimplifying this explanation. It will work with your camera. Do not expect it to stop action though. THAT is not what the light is designed for.

Q: 4. Will this work with my Sony A7 III?

A: The Bolt VM-110 LED Macro Ring Light is a manual light and will work with the Sony a7 III Mirrorless Camera.

Q: 5. How much light does this light put out? To say the Guide No. is 15'/4.7m at ISO 100 does not answer the question. Guide Numbers are useful for flash, because the flash duration is far less than the shutter speed required for flash sync, and therefore does not effect the exposure (For the record, the relevant calculation for manual flash exposure is Aperture = GN divided by distance). For a continuous light source, exposure time is a relevant factor, and I would need to know the brightness of the light to calculate the exposure time and aperture as well as distance and ISO to get the correct exposure.Lux or EV at a certain distance would be appropriate, or you could give me a Guide Number that includes a certain exposure time, for example 1/100 sec.Typically a ring light is used for macro photography at a very short distance. At a very short distance light falloff due to the inverse square law is small. On the other hand Depth of Field is extremely small at large magnifications, requiring a very small aperture of F22 or smaller. So plenty of light is needed. So I come back to my question - how much light does this device produce? I am interested, but need to know before I decide to buy.

A: Hello David - I have had this product for a couple of years now. I have found it to be useful on many occasions, including adding the light to the camera for great fill flash outdoors on folks. The LEDS are split into all on, left or right banks of LEDS. Or, from a macro ring-flash POV the unit is functional and adds sufficient light when using it for macro work. THE MAIN THING TO CONSIDER is that this is a VERY PLASTIC unit. Including the vast number of lens-rings. It is doubtful that the unit would survive a fall to the ground - AND - you only have one shot at the threads on the plastic rings... For the money however, I found a safe place for the light to live in a gadget bag, so I keep it warm, safe, and dry. All in all, If you plan to make this a go-to flash, my opinion is keep looking and find a unit is built to handle heavy use. Otherwise, this is a little gem to have when you realize that you need it. Hope that helps! Kevin

Q: 6. will the vm 110 work with Oympus OMd e m5 and the Pen series cameras?

A: This is not a speedlight, it just the lught source, the flash is of the same power as the light, it just preserves battery power, I'am sure it will work with the control unit in or off camera.

Q: 7. Hi. I own a canon EOS6D. i want to know if this product will fit well with my camera on any lens. i have a 24-105mm zoom lens and a 50mm prime. And is it adjustable to work with any lens?

A: The ring light is LED. It will fit most camera hotshoes including the Canon 6D.The light comes with 8 x Adapter Rings (49, 52, 55, 58, 62, 67, 72, and 77mm)The 24-105mm lens uses a 77mm filter size, so that will fit and most 50mm lenses use a 52mm or a 58mm filter size so that is fine as well.

Q: 8. I have a Sony A58 - does this need a hot shoe adapter?

A: This attaches to your camera using a standard hot shoe. But if your camera does not have a hot shoe this unit also comes with its own little stand too be used on a flat surface like a nearby table. You can also just handhold the unit or velcro it to your tripod if necessary.

Q: 9. Is this ring flash for Canon PS S5 IS?

A: Unfortunately, the Bolt VM-110 is not compatible with the Canon PS S5 IS.

Q: 10. I have lost some of the lens adapters to the Bolt VM 110 ring flash. Is it possible to purchase a new set of lens adapters?

A: For this, you would want to contact Bolt directly. You should be able to procure the rings through them. Unfortunately, B&H doesnt carry the adapter rings separately at this time. [62mm] Light construction but does the job. Useful for close up work probably need the bigger model if you are using it for portraits. But for macro fotos it works well.

[62mm] I like to do macro photography and also some macro video. This ring light fits the bill at a good price point. I can use as a flash or constant light on or off the lens. It's bright. Only thing I don't like is when leds are left on it does run the batteries down fast. Still I think this is worth it.

[62mm] Use it for macro or close up photography on combination with studio lighting makes a perfect combination to add some contrast. Obviously this is an inexpensive item but it does the job.
