There's no separate power adapter, and it works whether your Mac is plugged in or running on battery power.

A: My 1 1/2 old iMac running OS X El Capitan needed nothing else. I just plugged in the USB and I can watch DVDs or play CDs as well as copy to my hard drive if I wish. I am very happy with this unit.

[1.35 lb] I now have installed two of the StarTech USB to VGA adapters and both of them are working exactly as advertised! Two different computers, HP and Dell, both running Windows 7.� Installation was a snap just down load the current driver from the internet.� Instructions came with the adapters.� Connected to two different monitors (both older) again worked first time for both.� Worth the investment!� Thanks to B&H for super service and better than expected delivery time! 5
